this is NOT traditional slack key guitar. It lacks the rhythm, the grace and the traditional Hawaiian way of including the listener in the experience. "Dude" needs to switch to decalf!! But being local haole with hapa kids and nephews etc (Tutu had no haole grandkids) I'd add, "Well someone has to get the work done and there ain't enough Japanese!" I like it. But it's far from traditional slack key as the notes say. I don't think you can even call it slack key. It's open tuning playing with some slack vamps thrown in, shaken not stirred with some lap steel topping. Definately unique

I just stumbled over this after all this time! Mahalo for all the videos you share. I wouldn't quite characterize this as "traditional" slack key guitar at all. I think Barry may have modernized it a bit.

Amazing how this musician artist has such experience and dexterity for quickly moving a guitar pick between his right hand middle and index finger (while picking strings with these fingers) to between his thumb and index finger to rapidly pick strings, producing various sound effects with this instrument. Barry Flanagan should be invited to come visit Pensacola, FL and perform at the WUWF.org 'Radio Live' Show once a month (broadcast live over Public Radio, Cable TV, and internet) :^ )

Barry is a Haole, but Hawaiian at heart. He is a friend of mine from Maui. He and Nathan formed HAPA on Maui and gained famed there, then they just started getting more and more popular.

Hawaii has given the world so much talent, yet they never get the recognition they deserve. It seems these artist only get noticed when someone popular gives them some publicity.

@mikemantel Barry and Nathan did not form HAPA. It was Barry and Keli'i back in the early 90s. Nathan can sing, but in no way can he ever replace Keli'i. Keli'i's vocals and Barry's guitar tone is what made HAPA.

As far as I'm concerned, Barry is Hawaiian. We don't need recognition as much as we need to perpetuate our culture and heritage. If more don't realize this, especially those with native Hawaiian heritage, the Hawaiian spirit will die. Mahalo ke Akua for Barry, Nate and Keli'i.
