  • Thanks! I'm thinking of buying one Of these and this really helped!

  • HEY I HAVE A GOOD IIDEA!!!!

WHAT YOU MADE SOMETHING THAT MAKES A FIRE EASILY?

    oh yeah!

    It's called a lighter

  • dont't use the sharp side of the blade cause you'll kill your knife

    use the back of knife

  • thanks man really helped

  • nice! very informitive. : )

  • what if there is no steel?...can we rub a rock on it?

  • @Silverz Yes, because the mechanism has nothing to do with flint and steel as described in this video. Magnesium bars have a ferrocerium rod on the back, not a piece of flint. Ferrocerium is an alloy of metals that when scraped throws white hot metal shavings of it's own (not scrapings off the steel as when you use flint and steel).

  • i like how you explained how this works, keep it up. thanks.

  • Flint..Steel... Flint&Steel... MINECRAFT!

  • @smitened

    You made my day.

  • i have the same magnesium tool and it works like a charm!

  • if it is a magnesium FIRE tool, it should be easy, to begin with...

  • Where can I get that

  • Plzplzplzplzplz reply

  • Wher did u buy that

  • I just take my charmeleon everywhere. I don't need this video :D

  • lol you fool....use your other side of the knife..why would you dull your blade?

  • everything is healthy to him like if you agree

  • theres always coconut husks here in minnesota, thats what i use

  • @IWoVIHoth you know whats even better, find some pure sodium lying around (cause there's tons of it), just pour some water on it, and BOOM! fire

    XD

  • 2 words.... FLAME THROWER!

  • @PureSkaterKidd hell ya

  • then how come the flint dulls off but the steel dosent plz respond

  • @sparky9278 Remember back in physics, when the teacher explained that a force is an interaction between 2 objects, and that good 'ol guy Newton explained every force has an equal and opposite force (essentially)?

Well, the force of friction wears down both the knife and flint. However, the steel is more brittle, and therefore pieces break off easier

  • @hockeymatt1994 oh o.k butt im only in the 7th grade :P

  • @sparky9278 well then, have fun learning it later then :)

  • if you were to cook something off this fire will u get poisened

  • @redbear3100

Flint wears out, because force is being directly apllied, and friction acts like water on rocks.

Tiny pieces of steel create the spark, but the flint was being rubbed against, and usually a little bit comes off.

  • So I'm curious. If the flint isn't what is actually causing the spark and it's little pieces of steel. Then why, when I use a striker to light a torch does the flint part wear out way faster than the steel?

  • That's not flint, it's ferrocerium.

  • magnesium does not burn 2500 F I belive you're thinking thermite.

  • @Ikemike8337 ya, magnesium burns hotter

  • wow now this is a video it has all the things

how it works and the kind of thing that you have to use to make it spark and what are those stuff at the back

  • Bear Grylls uses a rock like a men hahaha :p

  • Sure you can use your knife to scrape off the magnesium but it will dull the blade and in a survival situation, a dull knife is not good. What I did was to take an old hacksaw blade and break it off in a vise the same length as the magnesium block. There's already a hole in the blade that is perfect to attach it to the block with the small chain that comes with it so they'll always be together. And you can break off a piece from the other end of the hacksaw blade for a second scraper.

  • @Crinklex2 Or you could just carry a knife sharpener. Or use several knives. Or use the back end if that works.

  • @link9000000 Apparently the point is moot since many companies are now including a short piece of hacksaw blade attached by the small chain as a scraper.

  • @Crinklex2 most of them come wiht a piece of steel now similar to and most likely a hacksaw blad

  • @chevygearhead454 You are correct. My older block did not include it. My newer block did.

  • @Crinklex2 And that is why he used the back side of the knife -.-

  • @iamproskie He was scraping off shavings with the sharp end of the knife which will quickly dull the blade. The broken off hacksaw blade's teeth can scrape shavings just as well and if the blade dulls you can just snap off another piece of a cheap dollar store hacksaw blade as a replacement.

  • @Crinklex2 Thats why i commented? lol you said " but it will dull the blade in a survival situation" i said "and thats why he used the back side of the knife" and not use a part of a hacksaw where it can more easily hurt you when falling or w/e. and a knife would be better in a survival situation multi-use when you have magnesium..

  • lol you dont use a sharp peice of metal (in this case a hack saw blade) you could simple use the fille part of the multitool after its worn out

  • @micahh182 A knife would be way more usefull, it can actually cut, while not needing a hacksaw because it can do it's job in this case ( starting the fire )

  • I have one of these, and other then the shaving the bar (which is very soft compared to the steel) i use the back. BTW he also says he's using the back of the blade

  • TY so much

  • Thanks for the demonstration...was trying to decide if one of those was worth the money. Only draw back is dulling the blade when scraping of the magnesium, yet a fire is worth it. And this thing is small.

  • I just use the back of my knife, it's got a small blade that is never sharpened, it seems perfect just for that and little else (the small blade that is)/

  • Got one. Works good. Using parts of the knife other than the blade works. Using the blade at a certain angle yields lots of sparks. In our part of the country, fire is more important than shelter.

  • i want one of these things where can i get one i live in montreal.

  • @pogoeaters124 walmart

  • never have to worry now

  • ever tried to strike a magnesium lighting rod with an axe? sick sparks that bouncec across the ground.

  • no don't leave it

  • just have a gas with u

    wait

    u have in your car

    lol

  • YOU WERE THE CAUSE OF THE LA FIRES!!!!

    just kidding...

  • wow where you bought it

  • REI carries them, basically any camping store has them.

  • Instead of carrying around a big hunk of magnesium id rather just take a stick of cerium, cerium acts as flint and isn't as dangerous to start a fire with, if you accidentally drop your magnesium into the fire after the sparks light you could be in big trouble, cerium won't burn as strongly or as long, but i guess it is really all just personal preference, nice video!

  • this was good video

  • i usually carry a block of magnesium in my pocket when out in the woods too :d..

  • yah when ur gona get attacked by a bear or starve ull think again

  • I learned this in the 9th grade without even trying...See also industrial Cisco Pam...add lighter...I did this.

  • thats nice i learnd it in like 4th grade and when i waz a little pyro
