@Silverz Yes, because the mechanism has nothing to do with flint and steel as described in this video. Magnesium bars have a ferrocerium rod on the back, not a piece of flint. Ferrocerium is an alloy of metals that when scraped throws white hot metal shavings of it's own (not scrapings off the steel as when you use flint and steel).
@sparky9278 Remember back in physics, when the teacher explained that a force is an interaction between 2 objects, and that good 'ol guy Newton explained every force has an equal and opposite force (essentially)?
Well, the force of friction wears down both the knife and flint. However, the steel is more brittle, and therefore pieces break off easier
So I'm curious. If the flint isn't what is actually causing the spark and it's little pieces of steel. Then why, when I use a striker to light a torch does the flint part wear out way faster than the steel?
Sure you can use your knife to scrape off the magnesium but it will dull the blade and in a survival situation, a dull knife is not good. What I did was to take an old hacksaw blade and break it off in a vise the same length as the magnesium block. There's already a hole in the blade that is perfect to attach it to the block with the small chain that comes with it so they'll always be together. And you can break off a piece from the other end of the hacksaw blade for a second scraper.
@link9000000 Apparently the point is moot since many companies are now including a short piece of hacksaw blade attached by the small chain as a scraper.
@iamproskie He was scraping off shavings with the sharp end of the knife which will quickly dull the blade. The broken off hacksaw blade's teeth can scrape shavings just as well and if the blade dulls you can just snap off another piece of a cheap dollar store hacksaw blade as a replacement.
@Crinklex2 Thats why i commented? lol you said " but it will dull the blade in a survival situation" i said "and thats why he used the back side of the knife" and not use a part of a hacksaw where it can more easily hurt you when falling or w/e. and a knife would be better in a survival situation multi-use when you have magnesium..
@micahh182 A knife would be way more usefull, it can actually cut, while not needing a hacksaw because it can do it's job in this case ( starting the fire )
I have one of these, and other then the shaving the bar (which is very soft compared to the steel) i use the back. BTW he also says he's using the back of the blade
Thanks for the demonstration...was trying to decide if one of those was worth the money. Only draw back is dulling the blade when scraping of the magnesium, yet a fire is worth it. And this thing is small.
I just use the back of my knife, it's got a small blade that is never sharpened, it seems perfect just for that and little else (the small blade that is)/
Got one. Works good. Using parts of the knife other than the blade works. Using the blade at a certain angle yields lots of sparks. In our part of the country, fire is more important than shelter.
Instead of carrying around a big hunk of magnesium id rather just take a stick of cerium, cerium acts as flint and isn't as dangerous to start a fire with, if you accidentally drop your magnesium into the fire after the sparks light you could be in big trouble, cerium won't burn as strongly or as long, but i guess it is really all just personal preference, nice video!
Thanks! I'm thinking of buying one Of these and this really helped!

Flint wears out, because force is being directly apllied, and friction acts like water on rocks.
Tiny pieces of steel create the spark, but the flint was being rubbed against, and usually a little bit comes off.

@Crinklex2 Or you could just carry a knife sharpener. Or use several knives. Or use the back end if that works.
