  • Wooowwww, wooowww... I had never played well as you. You are an excellent team. Congratulations.

  • that was teamwork!

  • you guys are PRO....xD

  • Two words. Invinsibility hack. Damned cheaters.

  • umm....whats the point of this, playing with default weapons just to show us you guys are good well, you guys are noobs... you are no match for me and my bro

  • @typical9ja alrighty then. I'm sure there are more pointless videos in this service though ;> sorry to have wasted your precious time :D

  • Whats up with the sound

  • 2:57 looks dead to me?

  • 2:58 looks alive to me.

  • Comment removed

  • awesome.

  • WTF is up with your sound son?

  • Well after readind you discirption the game footage has been removed. Think about it

  • Okay - not anything INTERESTING has been removed :P

  • the sound is funny

  • gj at keeping up the pace ahead of the moving screen.

  • Thanks, although the two and one player modes are different when it comes to the screen movement. One of the reasons why two player mode seems harder than usual is that you get less time to react, as you need to be more towards the right end of the screen.

  • opps sorry about that sisnt read the whole description

  • lol my friend used to speedrun on me and would leave me behind he used to piss me off so much lol

  • this is contra one....

  • Indeed, but the title refers to this being a two player contra movie. Sorry for the inconvenience, though!

  • legends lol

  • =). Totally agree

  • Lol, what's up with the sounds???

Anyway, good co-op. Note, people, the hitboxes in NES games are pretty nutty, not to mention quirky stuff happens, like with the fireball on Stage 2 and 3.

  • есть что вспомнить

  • This is definitely a cheat. Nevermind the hitboxes or all that stuff, but just look at level 5. It is impossible for 2 players to be so perfectly synced for such a long time, starting from as early as 4:58 but showing even better after 5:20. Sorry but I'm just not buying it.

  • im with ya it'd take days of non-stop playing on 2 player to get THAT in sync they dont die

  • I've played this game enough to know that this sort of syncing can happen a lot with decent players. I'm not nearly as good as these two, but my brother and I'd often sync up for about that long when we played. Just shows they know what's coming and plan ahead.

  • que putos

  • lol! Sound effects are funny.

  • You two did a great job. But what confuses me most is when 2:57, the blue guy actually got hit, right? So why...? Anyway, good vid.

  • ps: definately good players though

  • ok everyone.. they're not cheating at 1:34.. it's not a hit.. however.. they are cheating in one big scenario..

it's not a full walkthrough.. see the 4 medals at the top for each player that represent lives? you only start with 2.

i think the reason credits are cut out is this: so we don't see they used the life cheat.

i think this one done with several attempts through each level to nail it perfect, just for the vid..

btw.. the life cheat. on the start screen

    UUDDLRLRBA start

    just try it

  • We did indeed use the life cheat, but had we done the abovementioned, we wouldn't suck so bad at, for instance, level 6.

The reason why the credits are cut out is very simple. The video is 9.58 seconds long, and the credits take it way over the ten minute limit. If you check my 1 player run, the credits are intact. Why would we do this different?

Still, thank you for the compliment :)

  • OMG you both are very good! there should be more 2 players speedruns

  • dude on what system are you playing this game cause the sounds are kinda funny the beeping sounds when you kill an enemy or some other times you know cause and as i remember it the music went kinda slow as well or am i just becoming too old ??

  • I think they sped up the video thats why the sound is funny.

  • That is a lie. Just try playing it in Nesticle and you'll see for yourself that it sounds exactly like that.

  • chill man...I'm not trying to mislead people, I was just stating my opinion....geez

  • Yeah, well, I guess I need to take a chill pill, it's just that there's "they are cheating!" all around the place in the comments here :P Well, I guess that's positive! If we sucked, no one would be suggesting we used cheats :)

  • try virtuaNes as an emulator, then you will get normal sound. Nice speedrun btw :)

  • It's several minutes slower than any of the record-setting speedruns (some strategic route-planning can make a big difference)

But i see so few serious attempts at a 2-player speedrun that i'm glad to see this video.

you should consider making another 2-player run in which you work on keeping the screen from stopping. surely this will be tougher than doing so in a 1-player game, but i think it would be fantastic.

(But why is the sound so strange?)

  • Obviously a save/load and/or slowed speedrun where research was made would result in a very much improved time. Using the spread gun would help a lot as well.

I do admit this was just another video that was (perhaps too) quickly thrown together, but it still makes me proud to see us playing the game well, even if I know many places where improvement could be made even without any tools/cheats.

  • i don't necessarily mean using ROM cheats. and i admire your use of the default gun -- that requires skill. i think this is a good video because there are few serious 2 player contra runs out there.

it's interesting that this game actually becomes a good deal harder when you play with 2 people. most of the events are triggered by the screen scrolling past a certain spot, hence you can sort of control the timing of game-events. However, in 2-player, screen-control is a shared task.

  • the screen move point is actually more towards the right end of the screen as opposed to the singleplayer where it's in the middle. This has some interesting consequences, such as allowing level 5 to be played a lot faster as you don't have to wait around nearly as much. Still, overall it adds a lot of difficulty and a call for very fast reactions.

  • Hit boxes FTW!

  • it cheating 1:34 you can clearly see the ball hitting him dont lie

  • You're referring to level 2, and it indeed seems to be very close but if you look closely it misses by a hair :p Level 3 ball hits me, but as you can see from a post below, it was rendered harmless by the destruction of the hand.

  • what about 2:56 =P

  • That, like already mentioned in the posts below was due to the ball (apparently) being rendered harmless by the destruction of the hand of the boss. That's what I am guessing anyway, since I should have indeed died to that hit. If it's not that, I have no idea :P

  • No, it is not the case that blowing up the arm makes his fire-bullets harmless.

It looks to me like a legitimate dodge (to the right and then back). Problem is your character disappears for a split second while this dodge is happening. This is typical when there's too much being drawn on the screen at once (like when it has to draw all the explosions from the arm). It's particularly noticeable in 2-player games. If you watch close, you can just barely see it.

  • Your character (especially when curled up into a ball, jumping) can inter-penetrate the fire-bullets by several pixels without getting hit. I.e. bounding-box is not equal to the sprite's extent. It's just how they made these games back then.

  • just stop the film at 1:34 and you will see cheat

  • You can see the ball hitting, but it doesn't hit the hitboxes. Common "bug" in NES games.

  • Nope. Definitley did not get hit at 1:34. The bounding-boxes for both the big-red-ball and the contra dude are a pixel or two smaller than their respective sprites (graphics). And that's true of most of the bullets and characters in the game.

If you consider THAT to be close call, then you sure don't want to watch any of the TAS world-record videos for this game.

  • lol! they are good doing the same things!!

  • i hated when ur asshole partner would move ahead and kill you

  • good job

  • you guys cheated, invincibility

  • There's no invincibility. In case you are referring to the 3rd boss, the hand or whatever it is dies before the ball hits, and thus the ball becomes harmless. Yes, lucky but if that hadn't been the case we would just have recorded it all over again :)

  • I'd have to agree with HarkDawg, but tough call though. Even if you did use it, I would've fallen down some hole along the way. Nice job guys. Now do the same with Halo.

  • lol, the sound is hilarious

  • I think the hardest levels in this game are the Snowfield and the Hangar, because you die so often in them for making some ridicilous mistake.

  • Very nice. I think co-op runs are alot more challedging than single player runs.

  • ahh, i remember this game, i could never get passed lvl 1, it was pretty funny... but nj non the less

  • Slight out of sync stuff (due to a falling down goof by me) and otherwise slow (and cautious) play in level 6, but otherwise it's all good.

    Personal favourite is level 4.
