WARLOWWWWW!! Even though his "Free" is a bit...lacking in enthusiasm, ever since I listened to the CSR he's been a fav of mine, I get chills every time I hear the "RIIIIIIIISE". XD For the Final battle, Warlow totally beats everyone. Drew Sarich's Enjy scares me, just sounds too savage. And I like JOJ better as JVJ (see, he just belongs to that part, their initials are so similar). Haha, I think it's funny how after Warlow all the names sorta shrank and got smaller and smaller. Intimidated:)
Warlow. No competition. Karimloo sounds great too, but he approaches this completely differently. Warlow is still singing classically (which I prefer), while Karimloo is belting. Both sound good. Warlow wins.
JOW is fantastic as well, the Bb is pretty radical, but in terms of timbre, Warlow cannot be touched in this.
Oh Drew... you sound like a 15-year old. Thanks, but no. Thornton and Baruwa are the least convincing. Maguire's very convincing on stage, Warlow lapses into over-the-top in person. But their Enjolras days are over, so I'm sticking with new-school:
The way Ramin does it is perhaps the easiest way out of them all; he just puts a lot of breath behind the G and lets it happen, to an astounding effect.
Now I'm not saying I'm as good as he (far from it) but I can easily produce a similar sound.
I personally prefer Warlow; I adore his steely tone, and his consistent vocal technique is hard to maintain.
HAHAHA legendary comment there, and I totally agree. I would tolerate Drew Sarich though. I'm not so much a huge fan but I think his aggressive style fits the part.
I'm not trying to be a punk here...but can someone please explain to me why Thaxton is so "great"? I've heard & seen so much of his performances and have yet to be impressed. His acting is...okay...his singing is...not very ear pleasing...and except for the blonde hair his overall Enjolras-ness is not evident. For me, at least. So am I doing something wrong? Is it just because he's a hyperactive cute thing that everyone fawns? What's his appeal? Can someone please NICELY explain it to me?? O_o;
Everyone else I've heard loved his voice, so it must be you. Whatever would be unpleasing about it?
And his acting is completely down to the character in the book, yet he makes him real but somehow, that only makes the character stronger. Its interesting to see that he actually goes through different stages, he lets him develop and react to the events, but he never ever loses composure and strength.
I guess that's as nicely put as I could expect... thanks.
I've commented elsewhere that I do like his acting. I just wish I liked his singing. I don't expect a Warlow but... I dunno. Thaxton's voice isn't intimidating, beautiful, or godlike. Which an Enjolras needs, imo.
I honestly think Warlow sounds bored (interestingly, only when I listen to him as Enjolras), not intimidating, so I can't quite follow, sorry. And "intimidating" and, especially, "beautiful" is, I think, what I and all the others DO associate with Thaxton's voice, so, we'd argue that it is exactly that... I'm sorry to say I really don't know where you're coming from. In the end, it comes down to personal preference.
Bored? I always thought Warlow sounded calm and thoughtful on the CSR. However, what I've seen of his on-stage Enjolras... was slightly psychotic O_o;
Understand I'm not dissing Thaxton. I *want* to like him. I do really dislike his interpretation of "Red and Black"--which is by far my favorite Les Mis song. I guess I'm biased because of that fact. But I'm sure he'll grow on me.
Discussion on YouTube isn't hijacking, that's why this video is here. To compare and rate the performers ^_^
-1 me all you want but c'mon. Drew Sarich=not good enjolras. he just did the same twitchy "acting" he does for every role he plays with the same awful american accent he sings with. given the amount of "r's" he puts in his singing i'm surprised he wasn't taught by pirates.
@bbqthis you do realize that there is not a single defining American accent. It varies state to state. and it's not his accent it's his diction that that is giving the r and s my voice teacher had a major pet peeve about those sounds
Michael Maguires got the look for the part, but I think Anthony Warlow has the best start, Ramin Karimloo has the best top note, and JOJ has the best final note, with David Bardsley. All fantastic though...
Let me say this: John Owen-Jones. For the win. He is the best Valjean ever, and possibly the best Enjolras ever as well. He's blond, good-looking, and has the most strikingly powerful tenor I've ever heard.
After him, I really, really love Aaron Lazar's Enjolras. Karimloo is great as well. I must say I'm a little bit partial to Maguire over Warlow, although Maguire's "r's" are weird. Warlow has the technically better voice, but he makes some really odd artistic decisions.
Anthony Warlow, now and forever. His RIIISE is 100% Win, but here he kinda... doesn't go for the massive FREE like he does on the other clip of him doing the Final Battle on here.
Ramin's RISE is cool, too. And JOJ and David Bardsley actually *sing* FREE which is cool.
Drew Sarich's Enjolras scares me a little bit, I think.
I have to agree Anthony always gives the best "RIIIIISE" I've ever heard in my entire life!! I can't decide between Anthony and MIchael though... seeing Michael on Broadway changed lives, lol. He was so the epitome of Enjolras in many ways.
Since I like the more classical sounding Enjolras` the most,my favourites are Anthony Warlow,David Bardsley (best Enjolras I`ve ever seen live) and John Owen Jones.
Aaron Lazar sounded so much more amazing live, and he will always and forever remain my favorite. After that I would say Anthony Warlow, David Bardsley, and John Owen-Jones (Who I had NO CLUE ever played Enjolras. Kudos to him.)
Man, I love gary. Too bad you can barely find any vids of him as Enjourlas :( (I can't find any anyway. Anthony is the best though. (he is my favorite actor along with Colm and Gary) Actually now that I listen to these guys, they all sound amazing.
I always prefer Anthony Warlow in this part, though this bootleg audio sounds a little bit high-pitched IMO.

Oliver Thornton...nooo, that was bad. Drew Sarich just overdid this part and cracked. Aaron Lazar and Ramin Karimloo for the win in this one.
But we seriously need David Thaxton here. He does a GREAT job in this part!
