The captain screwed up big time here. He just HAD to land in extreme weather conditions for no compelling reason. With an approach like that, go around.
There were a number of factors with this accident. The pliots were so focused on landing ASAP that they forgot to arm the automatic ground spoiler system and the auto braking system, too much reverse thrust was used, causing them to lose directional control. Also the plane was badly wrecked because the runway approach lighting system was firmly anchored to the river bank(such structures are supposed to shear off on impact)as the runway ended next to the Arkansas River.
I actually watched this episode on Air Crash Investigation and they said that if the pilot had deployed the spoilers, the plane would have slowed down faster but they forgot as you can see in the animation.
I feel horrible for saying this, I hope no one got hurt but I would love to have seen a video shot of that. Again sorry, but I've never seen an airliner slide sideways on the tarmac.
The Captain was flying & the First Officer was handling systems & calling out altitudes. The airliner departed the runway & hit a concrete & steel structure. The Captain was killed on impact & the First Officer injured.
This is an approach that shouldn't have been completed. The prudent move was to abandon the approach, go around, and either wait out the storm in the air or divert to an alternate field. The problem wasn't the pilots' alone; It was pressure from the airline to complete the trip.
Well, from a pilot's perspective, I would say that they held their course FAIRLY well while on final approach. However, they were still at 50ft at the point where they should've touched down, so perhaps they were too high and thus touched down too far down the runway. I don't want to armchair what happened but if I were the pilot flying I would've gone around because I was too high and it was an unstable approach at that point.
As a flight instructor the first thing I noticed is that on final they seemed to be struggling to not be on the downwind side of the runway. Especially on short final they really had to dog leg it back to the centerline before touch down. When I'm flying with students that's what I'm looking for; if holding centerline is tough on final its going to be harder on the ground. Agreed though, I don't want to armchair this crew's actions.
@TheSimonHarris Wow thanks for your opinion I didn't ask for. Because of your insightful input, and calling me a moron, I realize the error of my ways and come out of this a wiser and better person.
Of course I feel obligated to say I was being sarcastic.
@krispykreme82603 Probably into the wind. Not with crosswind and shifting winds like this. Also i suspect the runway was very wet so there was aqua-planing
You really are that fucking stupid, aren't you?? 'This game looks shit.' L-o-fucking-l! Cut, copy and paste if you think this guy is God damn idiot X,D
Your grammar is just, fascinating..........Instead of talkin shit on YouTube, i'd be working towards your GED and maybe take care of that speech impediment you got goin on there.
Must agree with other posts.....should have gone around. I have, however, lost track of how many times I have "biffed" on my sim. In real life you don't get to "Reset Flight" and try again. so need to always play safe. The moment they discovered they were "..way off.." they should have gone around.
Wow, he didn't even pay attention to the DH (Decision Height) and was so off the localizer and glideslope it was just very dangerous. Hopefully people will learn from this approach, but I don't even think the worst of pilots could forget not to deploy spoilers AND autobrakes on touchdown.
Why would someone lie about the death of their parents? Its sick. I'm not saying he's lying.. but one. Its bad enough out there. I'm sorry but i'm not convinced. Like your name though. Lol "gulfstream sucks" anyway its sad. People lie for attention, especially online. I believe him but then again i can't exactly.
Reversers can only deploy with weight on wheels "proximity switches" showing closed. The spoilers were not activated, so the wings were still flying, and the main gear did not sense the weight of the aircraft.
A car accident is brutal at 60 mph, and that is when you are surrounded by steel. The aircraft was mostly aluminum, and weighed several tons, so that is a huge impact force when the plane slides off the runway and the landing gear digs right into the dirt. You don't want to try off-roading with a plane of that much size.
That's also why they invented the term "estabilized approach", and I agree with navajocapi, he should have done a missed well before the video started.
Also this guy was playing with thrust reversers and rudder with Zero coordination at all.
My God, I'd even have aborted that landing on FSX where I don't give a shit if I crash!

Well this captian didnt know is his asshole from his eblow...
why is he using left ruder in a crosswind coming from his left?
and sometimes you can only add so much to V ref that when you touch down at 160 knots, its just retarded.

This is not a game. This is what the NTSB creates to get a better picture of what happens during aviation accidents.
