  • Styx came out of Chicago (Southside) in the early mid 70's. Like Vegas they were financially backed by the boycotts and got their start. F Dennis D Young.

  • This came out way before Crystal Ball so maybe 1974??? Just a guess.

  • ah yes old styx...we've touched a nerve...╚

  • Styx isn't quite my favorite band, but I am the biggest Styx fan I know.

  • wow !! haven't heard this before..when did this come out...Pieces of eight, Grand Illusion are my faves...but this rocks !!!nice !!!!

  • This song defines the word "Epic"

  • Amazing music

  • Always loved this song. Wished Styx would play it live, but I'm not sure they ever did. Even in old concerts I've heard they ignored it.

  • @StyxFan93 thanks so much for this post! I bought this album re-issued as "Miracles" as an 11 year old in 1984. Been trying to find this rare stuff since. Bless you, Styx Fan!

  • awesome styx much better than radio play come sail away makes me want to gag!

  • Fantastic piece ! Unforgettable !

  • manteb nih grup ....

  • soundcloud

  • The earlier stuff had such an edgier progressive sound to it. Much like Deep Purple or Uriah Heep. I know they had bills to pay, so radio-friendly songs were the obvious progression. But, man, did they go overboard with it. I started losing interest around the Cornerstone-era.

  • Sounds like old Styx...YEA BABY

  • This song was great because James Young sang lead vocal and NOT Dennis DeYoung. Much much better voice.

  • @bassmanjoe That difference is why I prefer James voice and singing style. Dennis DeYoung over annuciates (chews) his words so the vowels come out really really bright, Best example of that is the beginning of Come Sail Away. Personal preference :) As far as his musicianship I admittedly don't know alot about his abilities.Maybe he is a better songwriter than singer.

  • THIS... IS THE DEFINITION OF EPIC. Pure magic in this

  • Much volume is required.

  • 1:23-1:34 is perhaps the most epic 11 seconds of organ riffing in the history of man-or rather, men of miracles.

  • The part where the guitar starts is the best!

  • Any Styx fan living in the Chicago area will be happy to hear that they will be headlining at the Naperville Ribfest on July 2nd, 2011!!!

  • I was probably too young to get into the early Styx stuff when it happened, "The Grand Illusion" was my introduction to these guys. But since then I have checked out some of their earlier work, I do have the first two on CD, but I realize I need to get "The Serpent Is Rising" & "Man Of Miracles" too!! This is real good stuff!!

  • @jeffthrow6892 "The Grand Illusion" was the second record they made after they became famous, but there were no "hits" off of Crystal Ball. "Come Sail Away" off of Grand Illusion attracted a whole lot of new Styx fans. The first Styx album wasn't so great, but Styx II, The Serpent is Rising, Man of Miracles, and Equinox are as good or better than the ones they made after becoming famous. Check Amazon for a CD with their first four albums in one package. It has an unreleased track, too.

  • @TuberOnTheLoose -- Yeah i know about the two-fer CD with the first four albums on it, might pick it up some day. And I've had "Equinox' & "Crystal Ball" for a long time too.....both are real good. There was a couple of songs from "Crystal Ball" that got airplay, at least around here (St. Louis), anyway. I think the first album does have some good songs on it, it just isn't maybe as consistent as the ones that followed......

  • I love Styx. They sure had variety over the years My favorites are the straight rock, mostly Tommy's songs, but the earlier and later hits are good too.

They became two different bands, the TS/JY camp, and Dennis'. It would be great to see Dennis back, but that does not look likely.

  • This is the first Styx album i bought and still have. In my eyes Grand Illusion was the last of Styx. They are such a mix of of character. And I will part with this, If ever there was a song to replace the Star Spangled Banner, It's Madame Blue. Thanks for the tunes;}

  • Thank you for finally put this song on the net. I've been looking for it for a couple of years now.

  • one of the first epic rock/metal songs!! incredible!!

  • I hear young people here, welcome to the real song writers not the pumped up plastic songs of today... i hope anybody here reading this knows what i mean...

  • @searchme45 said listen to the Kettle drums and organ some of it sounds like a Operatic, or visual presentation....Loved Styx since late 70s...ohh age showing...they are older than me...!!!!

  • Cool song! This album overall isn't rated very high.

  • You just had to be there in the early (pre-Shaw) days....Greatest band to never make it big...period !!!

  • - just picked up this Album on vinyl today at a local flea market/antiques place.

I have never really listened to Styx, but being a fan of tons of earlier late-60s stuff, I'm loving what seems to be a bit of a James Gang sound influence? maybe its just me..? -- With the early YES sound added. Maybe some Sabbath too? u know- all combined and progressed to make some real fine music. COOL STUFF :)

  • @kngofqns Hail STYX!

  • @Cthulu51: I'm not offended :). I know that many people dislike Paradise and Kilroy, and I can understand it. Man of Miracles and Paradise Theater do not have the same sound or types of songs, and sometimes it's difficult to hear it is the same band. But I like all their albums anyway (I know a little about the music, since I own something around 270 Styx records). Everybody are allowed to have their own opinion ;)

  • one of my fave Styx songs, thanks for posting...

  • I always loved the drums on this tune. Great song. When "Lady" became a hit I went out and bought all five Styx albums available and I was hooked. Until Kilroy, that is. I actually have this album cover signed by the band, although I have Tommy Shaw's signature instead of JC's. Tommy didn't want to sign it at first since he didn't play on it. Then Dennis signed it on the back cover after everyone else had signed the front.

  • never thought i'd ever get a hold of this song again! this is pre-Tommy Shaw Styx! a real find! last time i heard this was on vinyl..

    Thanks StyxFan93!

  • ill listen to any Styx song that JY sings and ill love it.

  • '70s power metal :D

By the way, German power metal band Stormwitch did a cover on this song, but did not give Styx credit for it.

And Cthulu51: Paradise Theater is NOT crap :)

  • Some say "Paradise" is their best work. Others say it is "Kilroy."

  • good one from jy with his wonderful screaming voice. such a contrast to dennis and his smooth tremelo.

  • nice post
