Simply because it's not "played in quarters" doesn't mean it doesn't have quarters. For example, a standard soccer match (per Wikipedia) has 2 halves each consisting of 45 minutes. So the "third quarter" of a soccer match could be defined as anywhere between minutes 46 and 67.5 of play. It's simple math.
