@Modernprankz The power is out, not the telephone. The phone is not connected the the house power supply. How would you call the power company to tell them you don't have power if the phone didn't work?
I remember this day! I was at Six Flags, on the Log Flume ride ... we were going up and all of a sudden we stopped. Me and my friends were stuck there for about 3 hours, in the heat too! It was brutal. And by the time we drove home it was night and it was black everywhere.
@Conduit13C I guess it depends like of your using a well or a local water pump, but toilets don't use electricity I believe at least not the older ones
@363Simba ahh, well my cheap little toilet uses electricity. so that means whenever lightening strikes and knocks out the power, i got no toilet. sucks to be me...lol.
I slept butt-naked on my roof with a tent, nice ass breeze throughout the night....my little propane stove cooking up whatever meat there was from the fridge..
Just like the old days in the philippines, geo-thermal powered our city...and if there was a storm or just a little problem with the lines....city was assed out.
I got stuck on the Cyclone. My family and I were going to eat Nathans but we were like let's go on The Cyclone 1st. So we got stuck and waited an hour.
So when there is electricity...people stay inside and use it...but when theres no electricity...they all roam outside...shows how much they need their electricity lol
I don't think all those people on the streets were just roaming around because they had bugger-all to do inside their houses. They probably had places to be and the subway stopped working and so did the traffic lights meaning that they had to walk to get where they had to be.
I lived on Long Island when this happened and this was one of the most funnest days of my life. Kids were hanging out all over by the hundreds in my neighborhood, people were just inviting anyone into their pool, i remember playing catch in my front yard until it got too dark to see the ball. I remember lighting about 25 candles throughout my house also. An experience i will never forget.
Being a veteran of the Big Blackout of 1965, and remembering the blackout of 1977 (I was a live-in "nanny," a job I HATED, in Mass.), I don't for the life of me know WHY I have absolutely no memory of this one! It happened on my wedding anniversary, and I live in PA. I DO have a memory of a NY blackout happening much earlier, after my daughter was born in 1996 and BEFORE 9/11! I do remember that it happened during the summer. Guess it's what you'd call a "time slip" or another dimension. WEIRD!
i lived in Sound Beach on Long Island then, and our lights were only out for 4 hours, they came back on at 8:30, but I'm sure it's easier to restore power to Long Island compared to NYC. It's BORING on LI when there's no lights.. NYC looks MUCH MORE fun! :)
wow i remember that day so clearly they was charging like 5$ for a little candle at the bodegas.ive never seen so many people out side and the crazy thing was i didnt even see one cop
It wasn't a joke. I saw the footage of mayor Giuliani saying it 'definately started in Canada'. Several other shows on CNN afterwards said it started in Canada.
Terrible? Since When??? This was beautiful. Of course, my job was messed up, but I felt great once back at home with my and other families with candles.
well it may have had been a good time up there in NYC, but down here in Detroit, it was godawful. The people over here don't seem to share that special "bond" they do in NY...if ya know what i mean...
well, it would've been the same here if the police were'nt so tight on them. Just get all those criminal homeless out of detroit and it would all feel different.
I could not believe i missed this!!! I WAS IN Florida When this HAPPEND!!! but ironcaly the next summer, in 2004 when i was BACK in Florida there was a BLACKOUT, the power was out for 4 days because of hurricane charlie, i guess if u really want something , it can happen!! but it was not the best experince we lost $300 worth of food, N no running water(not to metion how nasty the toliet was)and it was lik 125 degrees ouside even in da night ,
I cannot believe how americans react to not havin electricity... It happens! Its called a power cut... not unsual you know.. Surivial kits? fuk me... come on like, Must be cause in Ireland we get them every week... just do without it... stop over reacting to everything!

@boy1er1990 uhhh its a large city with lots of people and has subways, airports, and highways. you still think it would be easy to not have electricity? think of what you say, up here in Upstate New York, we get power failures, and we just wait it out. that's why i hate most of you people, you think that us americans are fat, lazy, and think about ourselves. go drink some Guinness and watch football, kay?

You of course, don't have to worry about this because your to busy working with your primitive tribesmen.
@thefinalfrontier1701 Just to let you know what would not have been possible without our "tribe". The Apollo missions could not have happened without a type of algebra invented in 1843 by William Rowan Hamilton, We changed the face of modern warfare. by inventing the first successful submarine. Large-scale electricity power stations would not be possible, without the steam turbine invented by Charles Parsons in the 1880s, and still used in power stations around the world.
