I wouldnt trade Starcraft 2 for this anyday, the reason old games are remembered so well is because we had to use our imagination (which has far better graphics and cool stuff than any ammount of polygons) while the games were flat, inherently uninteresting and incredibly simplistic.

Warcraft 3, Tried to include RPG elements, With heroes and neutral creeps, Items ect, It was not a bad game, Just not a great RTS.

Warcraft 2 is closer in style to starcraft in that its more about macro management then micro, One difference, Is that the two races played allot alike, with units mirroring each other , Only the spell casters were distinctly different to their counterparts in the opposite race.
