What version of Ubuntu are you running? I'm running 11.10 and I don't have "System Preferences and Appearance" I have "System Settings" then Appearance, which has very limited options. How do I make my computer exactly like yours? You make it look so easy, but it never works.

compiz is a great solution for eyecandy. =D i've managed to use it effictively aross the board in gnome, kde, and xfce user interfaces. =) even on a netbook it manages the resources well, but thankfully i've got a higher powered machine now. What if the graphics driver ubuntu installed is not the right one like say for a Compaq Evo D510 SFF and it doesnt show a proprietary driver? Its an onboard not a graphics card but the "3d effects" are not working properly. I am having to run it in fallback mode, How do i get the "right graphics driver for ubuntu?" definitely enable "Ring Switcher" in ccsm. way better than the normal alt+tab window selection thingy. looks awesome! you might need to customize it a bit, and make the windows bigger when they are in the ring, at least i think that looks the best.

The only reason I don't use Linux is because my sound hardware isn't supported. It's a firewire MOTU device, and unfortunately MOTU refuse to release their drivers for Linux. If there is a driver out there I'd like to know about it!
