Saw this years ago at BIFF. I think it is for viewers with a romantic sense of cinema... It is a bit silly and self indulgent for me. I was bored and unmoved but recognize the power it has for many. For some allegory and symbolism are powerful, for others story and change mean much more.
"story and change" like they do in Hollywood, you mean? That kind of cinema where you don't have to think, and everything is served to you like a fast food.
@lamentate07 Of course not compared to Angelopoulos or Tarr but they are indeed longer than the average and there are plenty of examples.
I have read that Tarr considers Cassavettes and Fassbinder his main influences. It doesnt surprised me that Jancso films influenced Tarr but a lot of hungarians film students at the time especially films like Silence and Cry. But i have never read that Tarr would say that about Jancso, so if you have the resource link would be great if you can post it.
This music is very nice. and there's a young icelandic composer, made a whole album inspired by this scene called ...and they've escaped the weight of darkness... It's worth checking to say the least...
Wow. At first I thought this was pretentious and weird, but I stuck with it and watched all the way to the end... That was one of the best ten minutes of film I have ever seen. I mean, wow. That was so well done - everything was, the music, camera, the dialogue is really good, and the emotion that you can gain from all of this easily beats out any film I have seen in the last few years.
Scenes that taunts the truth with a reflection of chaos, the illusion of socialisation of reality that has disturbed the truth for centuries. The eternal eclips and moments in the world that moves our lives and existence while seeking for gravity. When starring at a psychology book I can see it's pure lies. When I saw this movie I could't believe how much it reflected life as an eclips and that by using a false piano. The music now moves me in a way I can't describe, Bela Tarr masterpiece!
Just incredible. This has to contain some of the best, organic camera work I have ever seen. And every part of this scene ties in to make it, really, almost perfect. We are so fed the lie of what filmmaking is. Our big cinematic machine would never take the time, in this day and age to give us this patient beauty. And, would the movie going populace appreciate it? I think so.

I agree that it is a fantastic film, shot beautifully, and it touched me deeply. However, I don't think it's helpful to complain about the decline of craftsmanship and so on. There are plenty of wonderful films being made and made exceptionally well. Immediately I think of Carlos Reygadas, Michael Haneke and Nuri Bilge Ceylan. I have high hopes for Steve McQueen, following 'Hunger'. Let's look forward and hope rather than wallow in nostalgia. It's possible for things to move forward you know!
Don't forget Andrei Zvyagintsev, Terrence Malick and Kim Ki Duk! Plus Steve McQueen can retire if he wants, Hunger is simply stunning and if he ever makes anything as good, it will not be forgotten.

Uh.. WOW ! Absolute pure magic! I've been born in Transilvania and I have never felt prouder of hungarian being my mother tongue than in this precise moment, after having discovered master Tarr.. thank you for your recommendations. üdv! :)
His greatest film. If you watch carefully, you might notice that these harmonies are the plot of the entire film. The mysterious "eclipse" is the overwhelming sense of confusion and evil that overcomes the town, only to fade suddenly. Tarr is really superb, this film makes me love him so much more.
There's a nice piece on Bela Tarr's Satantango in the latest edition of the UK film magazine Vertigo. Vertigo features him quite regularly. The magazine also has a good website with articles on Bela Tarr and other filmmakers.

Uh..

Tarr is one of the greatest, probably the greatest, filmmakers working today....

I really do like this film. The long takes are beautifully composed and orchestrated. I feel Bela's approach was perfect for the material.

This opening sequence is great, one shot, notice the drunk guy as the sun and how he keeps flapping his hands, its amazing, all in ONE SHOT!!!!

There's a nice piece on Bela Tarr's Satantango in the latest edition of the UK film magazine Vertigo. Vertigo features him quite regularly. The magazine also has a good website with articles on Bela Tarr and other filmmakers.
