  • "But Mr Hagelmayer, it's still not over."

    Indeed...

  • indeed this clip was a total eclipse...of the heart AHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • lol at the pretentious nerds who are confused into enjoying this subpar poetry reading...BUT YOU SEE IT HAS SUBTITLES AND ACCENTS...fuck off you meganerd faggots

  • Film Poetry ! ! !

  • thank you biosphere!

  • best opening ever

  • Makes me tear up everytime. I'm inlove with this scene

  • Hagelmayer Úr, a kocsmáros a jelenet végén a Jó Istennel egyenlő státust kap, hihetetlenül jó a Tarr komunikációja.

  • The best scene in cinema history

  • @ukrainietis57 Agreed. Along with hospital scene of course.

  • This is absolutely amazing! It is first time I see work of Bela Tarr but I know for sure that I will see everything he done, eventually.

  • Saw this years ago at BIFF. I think it is for viewers with a romantic sense of cinema... It is a bit silly and self indulgent for me. I was bored and unmoved but recognize the power it has for many. For some allegory and symbolism are powerful, for others story and change mean much more.

  • @BNEcityTV Would make a nice dance piece. I'm glad I watched it. Bemusing.

  • @stourleyk Yeah, could be a high school remix.

  • @BNEcityTV Brisbane international film festival?

  • @peterbrock2 Yes. Brisbane International Film Festival.

  • @BNEcityTV

"story and change" like they do in Hollywood, you mean? That kind of cinema where you don't have to think, and everything is served to you like a fast food.

  • Pozdrawiam II ROK KMT :)))

  • "Escaped the Weight of Darkness". Ah yes, Agalloch must love this movie

  • 10 minutes in 2 takes good.

  • @CommanahumOfficial Bela and possibly michael are sons of the real father, Andrei Tarkovsky.

  • @cineasta71 godless children ;))) (in the best meaning of course!)

  • Comment removed

  • @inhmn Perhaps godless children or closer to God than tons of pious people that are floating on this earth.

  • @cineasta71 Bela considers himself to be more the song of Jancso than Tarkovsky though.

And Haneke's shots aren't even long really. at least not compared to guys like Tarr and Angelopoulos

  • @lamentate07 Of course not compared to Angelopoulos or Tarr but they are indeed longer than the average and there are plenty of examples.

I have read that Tarr considers Cassavettes and Fassbinder his main influences. It doesnt surprised me that Jancso films influenced Tarr but a lot of hungarians film students at the time especially films like Silence and Cry. But i have never read that Tarr would say that about Jancso, so if you have the resource link would be great if you can post it.

  • It made me cry every time inside.

    But "It's still not over."

  • Amazing

  • This music is very nice. and there's a young icelandic composer, made a whole album inspired by this scene called ...and they've escaped the weight of darkness... It's worth checking to say the least...

  • @martyuu1 His name is Olafur Arnalds, and I agree that the album is well worth checking out.

  • My favourite movie, thanks for posting

  • stunning to say the least!

  • my professor shot this. Rob Tregenza.

  • And I'm hungarian, and Tarr Béla also.

  • 05:55

  • Wow. At first I thought this was pretentious and weird, but I stuck with it and watched all the way to the end... That was one of the best ten minutes of film I have ever seen. I mean, wow. That was so well done - everything was, the music, camera, the dialogue is really good, and the emotion that you can gain from all of this easily beats out any film I have seen in the last few years.

  • Scenes that taunts the truth with a reflection of chaos, the illusion of socialisation of reality that has disturbed the truth for centuries. The eternal eclips and moments in the world that moves our lives and existence while seeking for gravity. When starring at a psychology book I can see it's pure lies. When I saw this movie I could't believe how much it reflected life as an eclips and that by using a false piano. The music now moves me in a way I can't describe, Bela Tarr masterpiece!

  • Just incredible. This has to contain some of the best, organic camera work I have ever seen. And every part of this scene ties in to make it, really, almost perfect. We are so fed the lie of what filmmaking is. Our big cinematic machine would never take the time, in this day and age to give us this patient beauty. And, would the movie going populace appreciate it? I think so.

  • I'm crying again...

  • amazing.

  • WOW! TOTALLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING EVER! MOVIES LIKE AVATAR AND STUFF ARE TOTAL CRAP WHO CARES ABOUT THAT! COLOR IS FOR LOSERS! ALSO SENSE OF HUMORS ARE FOR LAMES! ARTISTIC MOVIES ARE THE ONLY RELEVANT MOVIES! :p

  • @guitarboysg I could never explain. Anyway, you would never understand. Do you know any blind people? What happens to their eyes in your case happens to your soul. No remedy...

  • wtf. what the fuck is so great about this 5th grade science lesson.

  • @guitarboysg Your missing of the point is astounding, but I'll be nice.

The reason he mentioned it being an explanation of Immortality is that the whole '5th grade science lesson' is a simile for death. The total eclipse being death, and then returning to movement, aka, new life.

'It's not over' referencing that life will not stop, it will begin again after a moment of darkness (death).

    Get it?

  • I stopped watching the film after the first scene.

I couldn't stand such unfathomable beauty.

  • so this is a black and white movie about people who do not know how the earth and moon revolve, featuring homosexuals in a bar?

  • @exet :that's right and you are an idiot. now, you can go back and think about what was wrong with your post. one thing is for sure, it will take a long long long time.

  • That was so beautiful.

  • gyönyörű

  • Now I HAVE TO see this movie.

  • should be in english.... awesome awesome awesome... we don't see things like this nowadays... brilliant 10 minutes..

  • fuckin beautiful

  • Ten of the finest minutes in the history of cinema. WH is a great, towering work that bears watching many times.

  • can i watch this movie online???

  • Wow... Defiantly buying this.. They say it's based on a book, Melancholy of Resistance by László Krasznahorkai.. Should I read the book first or watch the movie?

  • Is this movie in Black & White?

  • @qwemnb10

    Are you color blind?

  • fantastic sharing. it is very great.

  • I could watch this intro 1000 times...

  • Wow..... I am dying to see this!!!!!!

  • I'm so excited to watch this!!!!

  • One of the bests films ever made.

    Human race should be proud.

  • If you don't understand this scene or this movie, you should read or watch a couple interviews on Tarr. It really puts his films into perspective.

5 minutes: HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING

  • @cuallito same her man...

  • @cuallito love this interpretation

  • I cry everytime I see Werkmeister Harmoniák.

  • @SalvadorPalma ...it was amazing when i saw it on the big screen...in a museum or something...but then the DVD was super disappointing cause the sound is off from their voices...it ruins it for me...or rather, can you imagine how much better

  • Yes. We are are very proud of him:)

  • Jesus Christ! This is soooooooooo beautiful! I am a huge Bela Tarr fan now!

  • Based upon the novel by László Krasznahorkai:The melancholy of resistance

  • the harmony adds such expressive mood and feeling to the scene that it's almost hypnotizing, its simply beautiful.

  • he speaks Hungary :) Fantastic !

  • I'll give every person here 10 dollars if there will ever be anyone in my class who will watch this movie.

It's one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of cinema though.

  • Šta je ovo?

Snovi Matije Gupca AKA Život na selu pre 5 vekova?

Daj se malo bacite u 21 vek...

  • Master of the long take, poetic way of saying how lonely we are..pure genius. I couldnt agree more lucky are the ones who can see a gem like this...

  • check also gus van sant movies , specially gerry, elephant, last days, beautiful movies!!

  • I'm a great fan of Van Sant but it can't be comparated to Béla Tarr. I think he only can be at Tarkovsky, Kubrick or Jissoji side.

  • It's really a shame that the majority of people will never see this film. Bela Tarr is fantastic, and so is Mihaly Vig.

  • Why is that?

  • The music of this film is soooo beautiful...

  • I just bought the CD on Amazon, they had ONE, $25

  • I don't know why, but i just love this. i keep watching it over again.

  • Valuska looks like he's mouthing out different words. This throws me off a little.

    But this movie is amazing.

  • he is speaking german, but the film is dubbed to be hungarian.

  • Comment removed

  • he speaks German......

  • He is a german actor. The voice is sychronized.

  • I agree that it is a fantastic film, shot beautifully, and it touched me deeply. However, I don't think it's helpful to complain about the decline of craftsmanship and so on. There are plenty of wonderful films being made and made exceptionally well. Immediately I think of Carlos Reygadas, Michael Haneke and Nuri Bilge Ceylan. I have high hopes for Steve McQueen, following 'Hunger'. Let's look forward and hope rather than wallow in nostalgia. It's possible for things to move forward you know!

  • Don't forget Andrei Zvyagintsev, Terrence Malick and Kim Ki Duk! Plus Steve McQueen can retire if he wants, Hunger is simply stunning and if he ever makes anything as good, it will not be forgotten.

  • Loved your comment. I´ll look into the names you spoke of. It´s not a matter of hope, it has already found us. The "thing" has found us, its just a matter of looking it on the face.

  • I agree you you in dome aspects but you can't compare Béla Tarr to Ceylan, not even to Haneke. He goes much far.

  • additionally, it is becoming more rare as days go by to find craftsman with regards to cinematography and lighting.

many of the team that did wenders' wings of desire are no longer with us today. their legacy is hardly remembered by few that even understand the effect they had on the films they touched.

  • What are you talking about TokyoTabi? This was made in 2000??? And Bela Tarr is still making similar films.

  • yes, i know when it was made.

but even in this short time, since this was made, it is unlikely that a scene like this, with this simple genius, would be made again only 8 years later. and even more rare that it would be understood, or appreciated.

  • The great cosmic dance, ... w. music composed by Thom Yorke, and Sigur Rós :)

They just can't make them like this anymore. It's impossible. The photography, the lighting, the timing. It would be impossible.

  • This music was composed by Mihaly Vig.

  • yes i know. it's was to be humorous that they sound like this.

  • its just something magical. thats the word MAGICAL i think.

  • Tarr epitomizes good film making.

  • Mihaly Vig's music is one of the best pieces of original music in a movie I've heard.

  • Some of you don't understand... Maybe you are addicted to Hollywood movies... Try to figure out the meaning of this scene... If you all do it... you will see: that's one of the best scenes in the whole world.

  • The greatest film of XXI century until now.

  • amazing scene

  • 9:45 .. that's what is so amazing about this scene

the beautiful music also? come on man..

  • cabrones! esto es excelente

  • Hermoso!!! increiblemente hermoso!!!

  • A film grad's wet dream come true.

  • hihetetlen ez a jelenet........

  • Like many others, I believe this is one of the best opening scenes in film, period. The entire film is made up of wonderful shots, but the opening stands above the rest and is the highlight of the film for many.

  • best 10 minutes in film history.

the music has also been haunting me for about 3 years now.

  • Is Lars Rudolph/János Valuska really able to speak Hungarian or is he dubbed?

  • He's dubbed.

  • It´s still not over.

  • The best opening of a film I have ever seen. The whole film was intensely impressive, enwrapping, submerging though.

  • Probably one of the best openening scenes I have ever seen.

  • zseniális a zene....

  • jaja, s miből állt a tavalyi részlet?

  • Fantastic scene, fantastic music, fantastic movie. End of story...

  • én is médiából érettségiztem...ti milyen választ adtatok a foglalkozására?

Egyébként is szeretem a zongorát. :-D

  • I have to agree, the music, the scene...brilliant. I just saw it last night and right at this part, man it just put the hook in me

  • One of the most amazing scenes in cinema history!

  • it is taken from the book of the great branislav nushich surbian writer chek it out

  • Check out the scene with the DEAD WHALE inside the truck. Nothing else like it.

  • I've downloaded the Valuska theme and I just can't stop listening to it!!! The most brilliant fucking 4 chords!!!

  • what an extraordinary way to explain universe with a bunch of drunk people.. :) By the way, the sun guy does look a hell lot like Stalin, does he not? especially at the beginning.

lol at the bartender: 'alright, knock it off, get the hell outta here !' haha

    gyönyörü!!

  • The sun guy is a hungarian painter and performance artist called László feLugossy.

  • cada plano es como el pan fresco

  • Mihaly Vig's music..incredible..perfect for the movie.

  • is there a soundtrack available for this film?

  • there is a soundtrack with music from a few Bela Tarr movies..all music is by Mihaly Vig. Google for Filmzenek Mihaly Vig.

  • much thanks.

  • Incredible scene!!!

    Respect...

  • is there anybody here from Hungary?...

    no words for His art.

you might read Krasznahorkai's books too.:)

and listen to Víg Mihály of course :)

    greetings from Hungary.:)

  • Uh.. WOW ! Absolute pure magic! I've been born in Transilvania and I have never felt prouder of hungarian being my mother tongue than in this precise moment, after having discovered master Tarr.. thank you for your recommendations. üdv! :)

  • His greatest film. If you watch carefully, you might notice that these harmonies are the plot of the entire film. The mysterious "eclipse" is the overwhelming sense of confusion and evil that overcomes the town, only to fade suddenly. Tarr is really superb, this film makes me love him so much more.

  • Tarr is one of the greatest, probably the greatest, filmmakers working today....

  • I really do like this film. The long takes are beautifully composed and orchestrated. I feel Bela's approach was perfect for the material.

  • Wrong!

  • This opening sequence is great, one shot, notice the drunk guy as the sun and how he keeps flapping his hands, its amazing, all in ONE SHOT!!!!

  • There's a nice piece on Bela Tarr's Satantango in the latest edition of the UK film magazine Vertigo. Vertigo features him quite regularly. The magazine also has a good website with articles on Bela Tarr and other filmmakers.

  • read up on this movie..maybe you understand what it's about. it's brilliant.

  • Where can one find the music by Víg Mihály!?

  • it seems impossible :) but I found this hungarian site bahia. hu:2000/rovat.phtml?id=31&cikkid=2284 I haven't figure out how to order though :/

  • I found some on Soulseek.
