Hello jakthebomb, I foollowed your video to the letter! However my PS3 is still super loud, I cleaned te dust from the system and applied new thermal paste. Any advice?
@Grinsill There is more to this than my video showed. The GPU has a heat spreader on it, this also has thermal paste under it. Chances are, this needs replacement too. I would recommend you look into a professional service soon. Your PS3 will get the YLOD soon.
Thanks a lot! I didn't really have problems over heating, but I wanted to open it, clean it, and reapply thermal paste anyway. The PS3 was given to me because its bluray drive didn't work. I replaced the bluray and then the next day followed this video to change my paste, I ended up using Arctic 5 High Density compound. I fired it up and noticed a difference in the fan speed already. While idling, the fan sounds almost nonexistent. Thank you for making such an awesome tutorial, I appreciate it.!
@jakthebomb i just dit everything you did on the vid but i didnt use alcohol but ''degreaser'' is that okay? after that i cleaned evrything with a drop of water on a cloth and rubbing it clean and than used a heardriyer so everything gets dry... please tell me if this is okay?? my ps3 is running smooth & quit and the fan never get passed the 2nd gear.
I will tell you why sony uses that piece of crap, because sony want us the suckers that go out and buy their fucking systems so they use cheap materials and shity compounts like that one so our machines geting hot easily and give them 150 eyros to replace the systems with some sligtly repaired ones.Sorry about that but from the begining i had problems with that system of mine, for me it is not posible to have an 20 years nes working like a clock and the ps3 systems have those problems.
@jojuae You expect a person to do the job in 5 minutes? I wonder what you say to your mechanic. I want my transmission replaced now, you got 10 minutes to do it.
@jakthebomb Naaawwww it's not that. He could of edited out the boring parts. :P Would've put it down to like 20 minuteshaha. And I ended up watching the whole thing anyway >.<
Hi my ps3 is a 80gb fat and is a slightly different layout to yours however i still found your video very usefull my ps3 has never sufferd from YLOD but of late my ps3 was showing the signs it was going to happen was hot and fan was running flatout all the time and freezing now and again! So decided on some preventative maintenace did the thermal paste with the same stuff you did and also fitted a 19 blade talismoon fan whilst i was at it so stays very nice and cool now cheers.
im asking becuz i dont want to pay a repair man 75.00 to do the samething you're doing i can do it myself. i have all the tools need to buy artic silver 5 thermo heat paste.
and, will you make another vid in near future so us gamers can see it from above step-by-step looking down on it??? for those who cant use imagination of what your doing.
im just saying jak, it would been better to see it up and runing after repair. im not doubting ur skills just would been better to see ur system runing
@meeboot Why would you need proof? When my System dies, I make videos about it. Haven't made a video regarding my system dieing lately, therefor the PS3 must be working.
My dog was barking at the front door as my parents arrived back with Chinese Food when you were explaining about your dog and chinese food.. weird.. :|
badass vids dude, i have an 80 gig i bought back in 08 so i think im soon due for something to gone i can probley learn somthing from this vid, nice job!
I got a 60GB ps3 from ebay and it was having overheating issues, i replaced the thermal paste and replaced the fan(It looked like the previous owners were trying to mod the fan and increase the speed) now my ps3 runs like a beast.
My ps3 had the yellow light yesterday so I turned it off didn't ply the whole day and today I turned it on and it plays for like 3 min and freezes and turns off wat should I do?
I just completed this repair, even using the same IC Diamond paste and the fan still spun all the way up within 10 minutes of starting a DVD. I ejected the disk and walked away and the fan never turned off even after leaving it at idle for an hour. Not sure what to do now, unless I put too much paste on? Maybe I'll try again and use a smaller amount.
Hey there. When you used the IC Diamond 7 Thermal Paste was the paste really thick? When I repasted my PS3 I used IC7 and the paste was really thick almost dry? Do you think I just got a bad tube?
@jakthebomb lol it sounded like every time you moved there was a jingling noise, anyways i bought a ps3 a few days ago prob gonna redo the paste on it too for preventative maintenance
@apshively check to see if you have a 19 blade fan, if not get one. I just switched mine out from 15 to 19, makes a huge difference. Watching movies is enjoyable again!
I'd suggest putting the heatsinks/fan back on and screw in the retaining brackets. Let it sit for 15-30sec to allow the paste to spread due to the pressure. Then disassemble again and make sure you've applied enough thermal paste, while also checking to see if the heatsinks and chips are making full contact (otherwise add a little more paste in the areas that haven't made contact).
I have a question I know for a fact the power supply was working before I took it apart... Then When I finally put everything back together I don't get power at all... Everything is plugged in correctly... but I don't even get a red light or anything...
Do you wait a day or couple of days for thermal paste to set. I usually do the repair which i stated up above then let it dry for 4 to 5 days. I would like to know why i'm actually doing wrong so after repairing my ps3 it will actually run longer than a week. i have a ps3 60gb first generation.
Here is my question i have repaired my ps3 many time it lasts for a while then i get the ylod. After seeing your video for ylod i was wondering if i was doing either 2 steps wrong or 1. What i do is heat up motherboard let it dry for 20 minutes then apply thermal paste artic silver 5. In your video you show the amount to put paste after doing that and putting ps3 together.
well i put some new thermal paste on and once i put the ps3 back together the power button wasnt working and it said correct hard disk not found. What a headache.
@FlashMacker Double check all of the Cables, Trust me I have been there. You will sometimes find just one that wasn't plugged in. I learned the hard way when I forgot to plug the Fan Power Cable in. You need to fully disassemble the PS3 to get that one. Good Luck!
Got myself a used PS3 and someone else tried to fix it before. I look inside and there is no Thermal Paste AT ALL!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Im surprised this thing is still running.
Thanks, this worked like a charm on my PS3. It runs much quieter now. It's one of the original ones with PS2 backwards compatibility, so I'd hate to lose it.
the best thermal compound is IC diamond 24 for the ps3 real sickening works beautiful on it my shit even running games like uncharted 2 in a pretty warm room the fan runs only medium or low at times never high anymore amazing stuff
I used the hairdryer trick after putting on the new paste and it worked great lastnight but today i got the yellow light again and immediately turned it back on just to see if it would work and it came right on like nothing happened. Does the yellow light hitting again like that mean i messed up the paste or is it just that the chip is too damaged?
I really wants to see if that PS3 is still working, I'm affraid if I disassemble like this and my PS3 will dead, because it is not easy to do, it more complex than 360
@TruexGames really dude.....look at what you wrote "eye is for the wireless controller"....it's a radio transmission ...not a IR or any other light type of signal.
@Twigga226 most likely would help it out...but preventing ylod all together ...not going to happen with your ps3, your machine has already been stressed from overheating...thus the solder joints/ BGA have become weak...so ylod is most likely to happen to you.
I tried to fix my ylod ps3 after doing alot of research and watching this video. Im pretty sure i put the same amount of AS5 as in the video however i still got the ylod when i turned on my ps3. Did i turn it on too soon or could i have done something else wrong? I am sure overheating is the problem and the fan seems to be working.
It's good to see that you have changed your method of replaying thermal paste.I have been doing the pea method for over two years and have had excellent results. Also could you post a video on how the performance of IC diamond?I have been using AS5, and I was thinking of changing to IC diamond.
My PS3 fan when playing PS2 games goes full belt after a few minutes. I Didn't see you do anything to the EE+GS but i'm wondering can you change the paste on that. I'd be pissed if the PS2 side of my PS3 packed up due to heat.
@slightlytwistedagain You can't change out the Paste on the EE+GS, it has a Thermal Pad on it. There is no real point to changing out the pad anyway, the Cell and RSX are still running when Playing PS2 games.
@mrbobdog707 I know there are several speeds. My concern was the PS2 side going faulty due to the high speed the fan goes when i'm playing PS2 games. The fan does not do this when playing PS3 games.
@slightlytwistedagain when the ps3 needs to upscale to play ps2 games its using more energy, memory thus generating more heat.Mine does the same thing I own the 80gb version. Also keep in mind the ambient temp can have a factor as well...
@jakthebomb there is no need to take the back plate off after you the the motherboard out of the PS3 and there is no need to take off the touch sensitive controls.
@michaellewisjohn2 Actually You need to take off the Touch Buttons. The Original 60GB models had it Screwed on to the bottom PS3 shell. Also I take off the Back Plate to balance the MotherBoard.
my ps3 comes on dthen it turns off after 3 beeps i followed the instructions but i didnt have that problem before now it comes on then turns off it had the loud problem before but now just cut off HELP...
Hi there. My PS3's fan reaches it's highest speed after about 25-30 minutes. Should I bother applying a new thermal paste just yet? I am sort of concerned since I've also been noticing some instances where the frame rate slows down for 3 to 5 seconds when there is a lot going on on-screen, like the processor can't keep up or something. Or maybe that's unrelated to overheating?
@jakethebomb question i have the same model but my GPU card which is the video chip it died and ps3 freezes at about 5 min after turned on does this fix it,
@soccerlover1330 If applied correctly yes, it should. If it doesn't then it could be a defective motherboard. question is the fan running within the 5 minutes?
@jakthebomb I heard you repair computers, a rig I built keeps shuting down and saying the heat is at 75c and rises at idle untill it shuts down at 102 c its not a motherboard problem since I went thru 3 could it be a pwr supply or cpu?
Damn! Thats alot of screws, where do you buy that paste? Do you repair other people's system, because same shit is happenin with my ps3, i play for good 10mins and the fan is loud as hell. I'm willing to pay. Answer back. Jak You are da BOMB!
If this works and your PS3 lasts over a year. You should have people send you their PS3s if their not good at repairing themselves and you could just put Artic Silver 5 in the PS3s and then PS3 is all good and the failure rate won't be so high thats if this method works out and your PS3 doesn't start acting up anytime soon.
First off, I am planning to do a special on the YLOD Montage series, which is the YLOD FIX Montage, involving snipits from several people's YLOD FIX videos.
Secondly, if any PS3s I own gets the YLOD, I just won't even bother repairing it or sending it in. I will just mail you the broken PS3, and you can sue Sony to the ground, with my evidence backing it up, with all these videos, and have Sony watch all my YLOD videos, to tell them that we've had it. Sony needs to shape up now, or else...
@NOOBNUT08 Yes and no, if you see how I handle the components I am very careful. I have been doing PC repair since 2004 and not a single ESD case, then I personally don't think ESD would be an issue.
good video learned some really interesting things. i don't know if you knew this or figured this out but i found something interesting with the vents since yours stands on its side the top where the air comes in and out. the very bottom vent blows out very hot air and above that vent are two small vents that suck in air i see the system does runaway thermal where blows hot air as well as taking in the same hot air. i plugged those vents to stop that and the system seems to run quieter thanks

My PS3 fan when playing PS2 games goes full belt after a few minutes. I Didn't see you do anything to the EE+GS but i'm wondering can you change the paste on that. I'd be pissed if the PS2 side of my PS3 packed up due to heat.
slightlytwistedagain 9 months ago
@slightlytwistedagain You can't change out the Paste on the EE+GS, it has a Thermal Pad on it. There is no real point to changing out the pad anyway, the Cell and RSX are still running when Playing PS2 games.
jakthebomb 9 months ago
@jakthebomb So there is nothing to be concerned about on the PS2 side? The fan doesn't go full belt when I play PS3 games.
slightlytwistedagain 9 months ago
@slightlytwistedagain you do realize there are several speeds...does it sound like a jet engine or a hair dyer on low?
mrbobdog707 9 months ago
@mrbobdog707 I know there are several speeds. My concern was the PS2 side going faulty due to the high speed the fan goes when i'm playing PS2 games. The fan does not do this when playing PS3 games.
slightlytwistedagain 9 months ago
@slightlytwistedagain when the ps3 needs to upscale to play ps2 games its using more energy, memory thus generating more heat.Mine does the same thing I own the 80gb version. Also keep in mind the ambient temp can have a factor as well...
mrbobdog707 9 months ago
@mrbobdog707 That explains alot.
slightlytwistedagain 9 months ago
you take parts off that dont need to be taken off.
michaellewisjohn2 9 months ago
@michaellewisjohn2 like what?
jakthebomb 9 months ago
@jakthebomb there is no need to take the back plate off after you the the motherboard out of the PS3 and there is no need to take off the touch sensitive controls.
michaellewisjohn2 9 months ago
@michaellewisjohn2 Actually You need to take off the Touch Buttons. The Original 60GB models had it Screwed on to the bottom PS3 shell. Also I take off the Back Plate to balance the MotherBoard.
jakthebomb 9 months ago
@jakthebombi have an original 60GB and i didn't take my buttons off and ah right :)

BBMGTUBE 9 months ago
Also, the frame rate drop thing is something it never used to do. Also, I place in an open area when I play, so it has plenty of room to breathe.
Treg 10 months ago
Or maybe that's unrelated to overheating?

soccerlover1330 10 months ago
@soccerlover1330 If applied correctly yes, it should. If it doesn't then it could be a defective motherboard. question is the fan running within the 5 minutes?
jakthebomb 10 months ago
@jakthebomb Depends sometimes it does sometimes it doesnt most of the time it does
soccerlover1330 10 months ago
@jakthebomb I heard you repair computers, a rig I built keeps shuting down and saying the heat is at 75c and rises at idle untill it shuts down at 102 c its not a motherboard problem since I went thru 3 could it be a pwr supply or cpu?
Alexinnj 10 months ago
@Alexinnj make sure you are putting the right amount of thermal paste between the heatsink and the CPU. My Gaming Rig runs at 35C at Idle.

What do you think of the psn outage?
thekillerwaldo 10 months ago
@thekillerwaldo not a big deal. I have been playing Metroid Other M for the past few days to kill time.
jakthebomb 10 months ago 2
@jakthebomb another question, have you ever considered having your ps3 re-balled?
I've heard its a permanent fix for the YLOD, unlike re-flowing it
thekillerwaldo 10 months ago
excellent vid
tstrangles513 10 months ago
If this works and your PS3 lasts over a year. You should have people send you their PS3s if their not good at repairing themselves and you could just put Artic Silver 5 in the PS3s and then PS3 is all good and the failure rate won't be so high thats if this method works out and your PS3 doesn't start acting up anytime soon.
RIPTheRevofA7X 10 months ago
@jojodirt115 To make it clear, this PS3 did NOT get the YLOD. I just repasted it to prevent the YLOD.
jakthebomb 10 months ago
what is the difference between arctic sliver 5 and ice diamond

review of your work plz. Did you think your method is working well?
kbm9397 10 months ago
@kbm9397 yep it is quiet, after playing MW2 for 2 hours i could barely hear the fan.
jakthebomb 10 months ago
@jakthebomb how did you play with the playstation network down for 3 days?
kbm9397 10 months ago
@kbm9397 It is called Single Player mode, You should try it sometime.
jakthebomb 10 months ago
First off, I am planning to do a special on the YLOD Montage series, which is the YLOD FIX Montage, involving snipits from several people's YLOD FIX videos.
Secondly, if any PS3s I own gets the YLOD, I just won't even bother repairing it or sending it in. I will just mail you the broken PS3, and you can sue Sony to the ground, with my evidence backing it up, with all these videos, and have Sony watch all my YLOD videos, to tell them that we've had it. Sony needs to shape up now, or else...
JDonahue79 10 months ago
@Icestar20 1. Yes Reballing would be a better repair. 2. Yes I saw the Project Cafe. 3. PSN has been down and I haven't been on PSN for 2 weeks now.
jakthebomb 10 months ago
wow personally i would just buy a slim. I bought one after my 60GB broke. It runs alot cooler than my 60GB ever did.
inunaruharu 10 months ago
@inunaruharu I use the PS2 Backwards compatibility on a weekly basis.

@jakthebomb How are you protecting the PS3 from ESD when you take it apart? Wrist strap or heel strap?
NOOBNUT08 10 months ago
@NOOBNUT08 I actually never use Grounding, ever. I have never fried anything either.
jakthebomb 10 months ago
@jakthebomb Do you consider ESD as a risk factor?
NOOBNUT08 10 months ago
@NOOBNUT08 Yes and no, if you see how I handle the components I am very careful. I have been doing PC repair since 2004 and not a single ESD case, then I personally don't think ESD would be an issue.

My gosh. A 49minute video!!! How long did it take to upload??
rpballa248 10 months ago
@rpballa248 2 minutes. I have a 35/35 connection.
jakthebomb 10 months ago
@jakthebomb Damn. This would have taken me 2 and a half hours. I have a 11/0.36 connection. Any tips to speed it up?
rpballa248 10 months ago
Two questions: why does the blu ray drive need thermal padding underneath? and how is your gaming rig coming along?
theBostonsportsfan94 10 months ago
@theBostonsportsfan94 the rig is basically done, just needs another GTX 460.
jakthebomb 10 months ago
IDK WHY but I enjoy watching you remove the paste it's really interesting lol

CoolVids19 10 months ago
good video learned some really interesting things. i don't know if you knew this or figured this out but i found something interesting with the vents since yours stands on its side the top where the air comes in and out. the very bottom vent blows out very hot air and above that vent are two small vents that suck in air i see the system does runaway thermal where blows hot air as well as taking in the same hot air. i plugged those vents to stop that and the system seems to run quieter thanks
