  • What does the latax sprayer do? And this is totally new why was there 2 engine doing in between those coal gondolas? Arnt suppose to be in the back as a back engine?

  • @PhantomDark21 Its actually a polymer foam sprayer not laytex. it keeps the coal dust down while it travels to port and as for your question to those 2 engines: they need to be in the middle so that they are not too far from the front end so that the tran can actually get up the 2.2% grade with al that loaded coal weighing hundreds of thousands of tons. Notch Hill is a beast lol It takes one of these trains close to an hour or less to get up through here

  • @RailFanJon As far as I know majority of US railway company have most of there DPU engine as its last engine. And CN & CP is the only company I seen with many DPU engine in midways between its load. But mention to the gradient of 2.2% I think in the US there is this location call the Cajon Pass which have the same gradient as Notch Hill as you mention, which BNSF and UP coal freight doesnt use DPU in the mid-section of there loads, instead they have there DPU engine as its last pusher.

  • I have watched this before on different occasions but just noticed the video is cut at 1:50 so perfectly you really have to be paying attention to notice! lol

  • @Skiier1000 Its actually not latex man its a polymer binding coal agent and it is used for dust contorl while it travels to the port in vancuover

  • Remarkable. Excellent video

  • Nice video, and nice view of an interesting operation.

  • i went there once on my way to salmon arm to see shushup rails 2010

  • Changed ties under there a few years back.....

Quite the mess, even with the pads covering the ties.

  • Never did work on the westward track at notch hill! I worked thru on a brushcutter on the eastward track back in 92

  • Would Laugh my Ass off if the helpers got sprayd too LOL system malfunction LMAO

  • @theGUYwho1 that actually has happened before lol also check out my video at this location of a coal train going under the sprayer to

  • Beautiful video. Couldn't ask for better scenery and overcast. Good job guy!

  • Thanks!

  • TTGVP Great videos you put out!!!!!

  • ya ya ya whatever pretty cool

  • Yah, that it was.

  • How does it know when to spray the mix?

how does it detect that a locomotive is going through?

  • I don't know why I'm bothering replying since its stated in the video description what it does and more detailed descriptions are offerred in the text comments you also ignored, but its to keep the dust down since coal dust can have a very negative effect on track ballast.

  • No its a GE AC4400

  • haha, I dont think a GP38 would have the pulling power to help tow a train like this! It would overheat haha.

  • Haha no doubt

  • i would like to see a model railroader pull that of.

  • I've never see this BEFORE! But, I curious if do on winter cold day and heavy snowy so those still running water sprayer or stop till Spring break time those open or what?

    great the video!

    *add favorite and 5 rating!

  • I have necer seen anything like that.

  • simply Put ....Nice video...

    very nice work..A+A+ from

A CPR train nut In eastern

    Ontario..thanks Steve

  • I have been maintaining this facility since it was built and also worked on its construction.......pretty sure I would have heard all about it if it sprayed the mountaineer!

  • Saw this video and thuoght I should comment. The respray system sprays water with a very small% of binding polymer mixed in. This forms a crust wich prevents dust from blowing out. Also would be very hard to spray the RMR as it travels on the South track at this location and the Sprayer is on the North track.

  • Im not going to pretend i know what that is for SO some one tell me what is the point of that sprayer???

  • It sprays a mix of water and a small film of polymer to keep the coal dust from blowing out and help keep the quality of the coal during shipping. I don't know about you, but Southern Pacific used to have sprayers like that on routes like the Tehcachappi and what not.

  • cool

  • That's a pretty neat device. I have to wonder about how costly all that latex would be over the long run, though. Nice video!

  • by the way CV....awesome video..great job capturing those GEs workin the grades

  • That is amazing how it works!

  • Ahh, well apparently it did work with the RMR went through it one day, covered the whole train.

  • i was hoping you had a video with this pretty neat stuff.

  • Thats totally amazing, not only the sprayer but the size of that train. I guess if the sprayer got it wrong getting latex out of those radiator grills on top of the loco could be fun as well.

Do they just roll up the latex at the other end or does it just get crushed with the coal. Thanks so much.

    Marty

  • great video.i never seen one before.i like the bridge shot at the end.

  • That is nice. I've never seen something like that before. I wonder how it recognizes if its a car or engine? I see the infrared thingy off to the side.

  • Thanks for sharing this!

  • That's pretty neat but what's it doing?

  • At a guess... keeps the dust down?

  • Yeah, sorry guys forgot to add that to the information.

  • Yah I got that. It was the latex part of this that was a little strange. Mystery solved.

  • Yes why latex? Here in New Zealand we just let the rain do that job, it rains so often over at the coal mines it's almost that reliable! Surely it's quite expensive to use latex though? Is it due to some environmental regulation that forces CP to spray the latex?

  • yes, it's soul purpose is to keep the coal dust down, with the housing boom in BC, there have been a number of new homes built so close to the tracks that a number of people complain of the coal dust, NOW, I could put up with a little coal dust to be right next to tracks !!!! SaWeet
