  • Check out his album "Old Time Pickin'" a Clawhammer Collection

  • Shout Little Louie

  • I believe he is singing Liza Jane.

  • Wildwood Mountain is the first song I believe.

  • love this guy. going to see ricky skaggs and kentucky thunder on aug 26 at the watseka theatre watseka illinois.

  • i'ts Rocky Island, people.

  • @violinplayingdude The tune is Rocky Island(Hoe Honey Hoe). Most everyone I know who records this does it as Rocky island. However, way back when, The osborne Brothers recorded this with dual banjos as Hoe Honey Hoe. It is AMAZING to hear both Sonny and Bobby play 5 string.

  • This man is a legend. I am going to fly my wife and myself to Virginia in Feb 2011 just to see Ralph and the Clinch Mountain Boys (at Louisa). We live in the UK and there's not a music event I've ever looked forward to so much.

  • Rocky Island by Dr. Ralph!!!!!! Thats your title to the song!

  • What is the name of the first song he sings?

  • @matthanja Couldn't figure out the title for it, but didn't want to let that hold it back. I see that it's my most watched video, and it peaks in some countries as a picker tries to get it down like The Doctor.

  • @emmylunatic I think it is 'Pig In A Pen' many of the verses are similar

  • @matthanja dumbass everyone knows rocky island...

  • @matthanja

    Rocky Island

  • @matthanja I believe it's "Shout Little Lulie". I didn't know there were lyrics to that song, I thought it was an instrumental. But if you listen, Ralph says "I'll have Shout Little Lulie for ya first". And it's definitely the Shout Little Lulie I know at the end.

  • @matthanja Correction, the first song is Rocky Island, then he goes right into Shout Little Lulie at the end. My mistake :]

  • @matthanja I'm not entirely certain, but I think it is "Rocky Island"

  • @matthanja I think it is 'Pig In A Pen' many of the verses are similar

  • @matthanja The song Ralph Stanley is playing/singing is Rocky Island.

  • I have always LOVED Ralph Stanley, ever since he cut an album with my Dad,Landon Messer, when I was a kid.BEST WISHES TO HIM..

  • What a great video anyoe got the name of the song?

  • It's Dr. Ralph....not Dr. Stanley..

  • if you listen real close , and look away it sounds like the bagpipes and the drums, the clawhammer are the drums

  • I love this guy, he,s plays a good bangjo . real music

  • I can't see why your friends with people like that

  • What the heck do you mean,GoUpTop9.

Ralph Stanley, and the like are a dying breed and the same folks who sing the original old Northern Ireland (Scots) songs from pioneer days.

  • I've had friends, who were bluegrass fans, tell me they wouldn't cross the street to see Ralph. It's something I can't explain; you either get it or you don't. Personally he's my all time favorite. Thanks for this post!

  • Good fiddler.

  • OMG Ralph! LOve you buddy!

  • I never heared of this here fellow, but sure as hell can play the banjo boy. Goddamn!

  • Author of "Man of Constant Sorrow" from the Oscar-Winning film "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"

  • Ralph Stanley the Legend continues.

    Love him.

  • I don't care how many times i watch a video of Dr. Ralph sing Angel Band i still get weepy... i love this man...

  • What is the name of the song he is playing clawhammer to? I am hearing impaired and couldn't catch it.

  • rocky island

  • rocky island.. :D

  • Not that I do not agree, but what the heck does Tim McGraw has to do with anything?

    Ralph is the KING!!!!!!

  • Tim McGraw may have more money and a trophy wife but he'll never have half the talent that Dr. Stanley has!

  • Ha, ha.

And Tim, when he gets hold of a decent song, is actually very good; so that's saying something !

  • THAT is bluegrass/Gospel at it's finest!! Such a beautiful and powerful song.

  • and they call that sh*t on the radio country ha! wonder how many of those so called country singers ever used a wood stove to heat or cook way to go ralph!

  • Seeing him tomorrow! I hope I get to talk to him...

  • Love the harmonies on this one. Sweet!

  • Definitely a man to look up to with smiles from the heart and ears wide open to soak his music up like a sponge. It is very hard to sit still without tapping my toes!!!!!!

  • Even at 82 that man is still the best ever at playing the banjo, and singing! I loved seeing him live.. he's very entertaining. (: I hate that I was too shy to talk to him. :(

    Lol, you rock Ralph! :P

  • is this @ gatlinburg TN?

  • This is from Richmond's old train station, now repurposed as a Science Museum. Ralph's above the tracks from the coal days of rail travel.

  • awesome video, thank you for posting!

  • Ralph Stanley is the man!

  • Dr. Stanley will always be THE Man. Wish him Happy Birthday - today Feb. 25th - he's a perky 82!

  • @Britton1977 that man got me hooked on, and addicted to the 'bluegrass banji'....no one can help me now!

  • AN AMERICAN LEGEND!!!

  • Love this style!

  • Mellow!

  • brilliant

  • Ralph Stanley is one of a kind, his music will live forever

  • I sure hope so.. I suggest people see him as he is getting up there in age. Love his stuff since I was just a little kid..
