gdgt is no longer offering Chrome OS downloads, sorry!
We hosted Chrome OS for almost a year, but with its official launch coming up soon (and the fact that the fine folks at Hexxeh have done a much better job with their Chrome OS images) it seemed like the right time to take it offline."
@NEXTLOVER Haha, ya, I sorta agree with it only being nice for internet usage, but still... I wouldn't want to use it (in it's current state)... also, I found a netbook to be very nice (even though I took it back to the store to buy a couple 22" wide screens). Ended up buying a 13.3" HP DM3 1130 a week ago, and love it!
@etvaldo85 Chrome OS is for those who pretty much only use the internet. Currently it really is only supposed to be used for netbooks. Which seeing how netbooks suck, chrome os is an improvement.
@vargulf19 I think netbooks are great, they have there place. I use mine a lot - not as a power computer by any means... but as a great portability tool. I remote into my main PC when I'm not at my desk, I take it with me to work, in case I need it at a client's workplace (to test network connections, etc...).
@vargulf19 Yeah i know that now. Is a big disapointment coz when i first heard about an Operational System from GOOGLE, i thought they would run agaist Windows.
I didn't thought they're looking for a new market.
This OS was designed for Cloud Computing. For example, it is used with ZOHO apps, Gmail, Google Docs etc or any other application that lives in the Cloud. The idea behind this is to get to your applications on the web without using Windows or any other OS.
The biggest competition for Google's Chrome OS is that people will eventually start using the Sleep feature on their computers. I wonder what the head Google Chrome OS developer would say when you demonstrate in front of him that you can wake up a full OS in about a 2 seconds (kinda slow because my laptop is 2.5 years old).
@theyoungfucks Well.... I wouldn't say it's an OS in a browser, more like this.... pretend you have a netbook.... and ALL you have on it is Google Chrome. You can connect to the internet and log into your Wave stuff, gmal, websites, etc...
@theyoungfucks Maybe I'm confusing you... "I" am saying to "me" it is just a browser. Not a full blown OS. You can't install apps (from what I can see), just access "cloud" apps - google apps, etc...
@PCAddictsLive So it's a browser on a ubuntu distro w/ limitations. I see no use for this unless you just needed some quick internet access and didn't want to wait through the Windows startup process.
@Dysbulic Really though, this isn't a review, more of a "My First Look" at the product. You are correct, why do a video if I didn't use it, but again, just wanted to show what I knew at the time.
ive tried NAT and Bridged and they both dont work. btw, i have a laptop so i am connected to the internet through wifi, so i do not know what settings to use.
whats with logging in with a Gmail Account or a Email. Is this OS a Cloud Computing Operating System??? cause it looks like it to me. too me i would not use this OS and i do not know why Linux Community would alllow this. This is Blasphemy against Linux it's self!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They took down the Virtualbox link so now I have to runt he VMWare version in Virtualbox (which it said on that site, doesn't always work well together)
Well I assume the Virtualbox version would work well with Virtualbox and the VMWare version wouldn't always work well with Virtualbox, but now because the Virtualbox version link has been remvoed, us Virtualbox users now are left without any other options.
But anyways, anything you can do in Chrome OS, I'm pretty sure you can do in Windows as it's very Google Chrome based. It doesn't mean it's a bad OS though as some people may like booting up their PC in 5-10 seconds, ready to browse the web.
this is gonna be the future os for netbooks... you heard it from me first.... it is gonna be good for netbooks because its fast and "light" wich is good for under powered netbooks, and after all what are net books god for any way, surfing web, and typing documents and playing flash vids
I see your point, but have had first hand experience with running a netbook and Windows 7. I used it to remote into my servers both at work and at home, to administer them. I can't see being able to do that with something like Chrome OS (at least not yet).
i agree completely with some of you i was wondering what this would be for, but i guess that for people who just surf the web then this would be good, because of the speed but i suppose it will be just like linex that no one ever cares about but that s just my opinion.
Well, if you were to look at other videos of demos for Chrome OS they show more of what it is. This image doesn't include most of the stuff coming.
For instance, the biggest feature that is coming to Chrome OS is cloud computing where everything is stored over the Internet and nothing on your computer. This way you can access these files no matter where you are at.
yea, i looked at that myself today. i would say a huge amount of people out there only use their computers to surf the web, listen to music, and watch movies. chrome os is designed for those reasons. this is something that my mom could benefit from on her laptop because even she said that she mostly uses her computer just for web browsing. now this will never be a practical os for me, but for others, i can see it being very clean and efficient
@THEMIZKID Agreed, of course you would never be able to play any games on it... But if I had a netbook or laptop and I was on the go... This would definantly be a great OS for me to use.
Google should have made their attempt at an OS more complete before they released it. Only having browser capabilites makes it look like their efforts were half-hearted. It's a start none the less.
Ok... An entire OS just for a browser? Can you install anything on it? does it run programs? Is this going to be a rival to OSX and Windows? In the future, you can choose between a mac, pc or a chrome. No, I dont see any usefullness of this at all... Well, perhaps if you have a netbook that you ONLY are going to surf on... But then we have ubuntu that is probably a better choice. Any other thoughts?
What happens if you put Windows?

I'd like to ask where you got that wonder theme for your Windows 7? Just the theme/visual style is fine. Don't care too much for the wallpaper.
NEXTLOVER 1 year ago
@NEXTLOVER I just changed the window color a bit, nothing major
PCAddictsLive 1 year ago
@PCAddictsLive Lol. thanks. Thought it was a theme.
Tried the Chrome OS. My opinion: Great for netbooks (since that's all a netbook is good for - INTERNET); nothing special for a PC/Laptop.
Had a hell of a time trying to install the guest additions on it, too.
