must be the most expensive tv episode ever cant get away from the fact this plays like a 3 part episode of danger man patrick mcgeown is obiviously undercover as john drake
@RichardElden So what ? ; who cares that you write that ? ; such comments from you don't shock anyone because they became predictable a long time ago. You KNOW that
@RichardElden Lol, how can you accuse anything or anyone of racism when you call people 'Nignogs' ? ; that's hypocrisy. Usual Suspects is a very good film as well
@RichardElden But it is irrelevant what you HOPE for ; it's the same as people hoping to win Euromillions. Braveheart is not historically that accurate but is certainly not the worst film ever made by a long way. It is exciting and fun in many places, and well filmed and directed. It won Oscars
I got to see this in Cinerama at the Cineadome theater in Hollywood when it came out. I have to Say it was an experience I'll never forget. Seeing it on a regular screen doesn't do it justice. It was meant to be shown on the super wide screen. It was especially thrilling when the sub was going along under the ice.
The movie originally started with the icon logo of the MGM lion, but the recent releases on DVD went back with the roaring lion. The icon logo was first used in 2001 which I prefer.
Ice Station Zebra opened in theaters on October 23, 1968. Director John Sturges added a lot to this exciting thrill-packed adventure picture that went on to become one of the top ten highest grossing films of that year. Was Sturges trying to go over the top like Kubrick's 2001(which was released in select theatres in April of 1968,but the rest of the country didn't get to see it during its general release in the summer of that year) which was also given the full Cinerama treatment too.
great movie , the cold war shoulda never ended...the end of this movie reflects a certain disillusionment with the cold war that differs from the ending MacClean's novel...also it is based somewhat on an actual crash of a soviet sputnik on one of the poles and a low key race by the superpowers to recover it...
well i suppose you could say korea still remains but other than that it has ended. i have looked around and i dont see any reason to thing the Soviet Union is coming back...Hell the PRC a.k.a. 'red china' is more capitalist than most of the EU! Anarchism has replaced CPs in Europe as the radical movement...i mean come on: communism isn;t any ones radar screen. I can walk into any mainstream bookstore in the USA and the chances I will find a book by Marx or Lenin are below zero
@uboot1967 Well its available on Region 2 dvd as i've got it from HMV website or you could try Ebay where it probably is as well as in the UK it's widely available but i dont know if your region is the same otherwise you will get it easy !
Will never forget this...saw it when it first came out. I live close to Hollywood so we all got into our car and off to the CineaDome theater in Hollywood.
It's one of the few theaters that showed it in Cinerama. It's a super wide screen, it's totally awesome.
Responding to spacepatrolman's comment, "Ice Station Zebra" was presented in what was called "70mm Cinerama," which was merely projecting the 70mm film on the Cinerama screen. It was similar to Todd-AO in its earlier days.
One of the roadshow attractions when MGM released it in theatres in 1968 to audiences who found the film breathtaking in excitement and high adventure. Presented in Cinerama and Super Panavision 70,"Ice Station Zebra" became one of the top ten highest grossing films of that year, behind "2001:A Space Odyssey",and "Planet of the Apes".
@rayssonation the director sturgess said we need a big ending becfause 2001 was comeing out so they made up all that stuff about melting the ice with blow torches
If you want to recreate the five-screen effect with Ice Station Zebra it isnt all that hard and will make the film viewing more enjoyable as it has lots of dialogue panning moments and some effects spared across the screen.
On the soundtrack record this music is called the satellite falls lloyd nolan plays they admiral sort of an admiral zumwalt type he meets rock hudson in a bar i wouldnt expect zumwalt to hang out in bars .

The young guys who are on board the Sub had more to worry about than the Sub crashing ; they were in a confined space with Rock Hudson !!

Why did Howard Hughes like it so much?
The quandry as to who has the real canister at the end reminds me a little of Lacan's prisioner game.

For a big budget film, the taped-over instrument labels to make them "Russian" was humorous.
