It's a Violoncello da Spalla, not a viola da spalla.

@MrVadiaRotor Yes, I believe viola da spalla doesn't exist, only the common viola. This is the violoncello da Spalla, a antique instrument who it's believed to exist before the modern cello.

Anyway, anyone know why is this instrument no longer in (common) use?

I mean if there's an instrument a bit lower sounding than violin - the viola - there is stil a big gap between viola and cello so viola pomposa could be the compromise.

for some reason that looks uncomfortable to play lol. I still like the sound of the cello more. Whats funny is new reports are saying that The 6 Cello suites were meant to be played rather like a violin, on the shoulder (da spalla). Than between the legs (da gamba).

Nonetheless the song and the way he plays it is beautiful, but i prefer the cello more.

@VTKlutZ Eh, it looks sort of uncomfortable, but it can't be worse than the modern cello. I play cello and guitar, and I can't believe how inefficient the cello is to play - so stressful. But the tone is to die for.
