@missSara yes you should really as rats can get more or less the same illnesses as humans. one illness you should watch out for is myco which is like tb and is tb in humans but humans can not catch myco off rats. you will know if a rat has myco the rat will sneeze at first and then over time will start to grunt and find it hard to breath, you can buy antibiotics but more then rat will die. but to help the ill rat breath better buy a humidifier.
i wonder if yo uhave to boil the egg or just put it in the cage cause im probably going to get pet rats again if my mom finannly lets me get another one
Lol! That'll keep them bizzy for a while. I posted my first video of my rats today so please take a look and add a comment if you like :) I wana know if its any good or not. Thanks.
They used to be in a tank with a two-level cage topper. Back then they used the tank as a giant bathroom and stayed up top -- in this case, the egg rolled downstairs. Now they live in a wire cage and free range on top of a table whenever I'm home.
@liarliar1111 yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the more rats the better as long as you have enough food, bedding, and love. if your new to rats i would only get two
@RatLover1496 I have 6 xD it started out with just two, but they are just such awesome animals I couldn't resist getting more. I just got my 5th and 6th yesterday and today. I wasn't planing on the 5th yesterday because I was getting the 6th today. but I fell in love with her when I saw her at petsmart and I had to bring her home.
This is so funny. After I saw this I gave an egg to my 6 rats in their "high rise"...it was bump, bump, bump up and down the ramps as they fought over it (no biting, just grab/run). They figured it out finally. Hilarious!
I just bought 2 pet rats and I thought they were supposed to love attention and love to be with you, but they always seem to try and run away? Do I need to let them adjust to their house more B4 I handle them, or am I suppose to just hold w/ me no matter how hard they try to get away?
If they're young, they have tons of energy. I say let 'm run around and play. When they're tired, they'll lay still enough for you to pet 'm and snuggle. If you are gonna put something on your finger... be careful. The might not realize it's your finger... yow!
haha, ya! Had that happen already! But they're definately not trying to be mean, they're so sweet! My mom had her rat attack her foot the other day (her smelly sock :) ) They all have different personalities, it's so much fun
HILARIOUS! :) I gave my rats a boiled egg a while back, it was funny once one of them figured out how to sink her teeth through the shell. She was struggling to lug this heavy egg all over the cage with her and sitting on it to hide it from the others. It looked like she was trying to hatch it.
what kind of egg was that? boiled? It looks like your boys were having a blast, thought i would see if my 4 boys would enjoy it ^^ Thanks for sharing, you have lovely rats ^_^
It's a papery bedding called Carefresh. The rats seem to like it more than any other kind I've tried. I've seen it at every pet store I've been to, including Petsmart.
My boyfriend used to have hamsters and he didn't like when they bit him a lot and seemed uninterested in humans. He likes having rats because it's not normal for them to bite and interact with each other a bit more. Of course, not all hamsters or rats are the same. For example, I bet most mammals are nice to humans if you raise them from babies. :)
I don't know; I've never seen them give birth. Unless you're asking about whether or not hamsters and rats are related? Scientifically, rats and hamsters are both in the rodent order but don't occupy the same genus. Haha, sorry if I didn't answer the right questions!
Yeah, rats are social and will get lonely. (Every once in a while there's a rat who fights too much to be with other rats, but maybe those rats feel lonely too?)
Rats are cute looking to me why are some girls/woman are so freaked out about em i understand wild rats are and can be dangerous but why are thay freaked out about the pet ones anyways?
if anybody could answer this question that would be great thanks i have had a rat for about a year and was thinking about getting another maybe a baby just not sure if the fully grown one would kill it.
Adult rats are often willing to be friends with a very young (maybe 5 weeks old?) rat. Old rats are usually more aggressive towards other old rats. However, there's always a chance the old rat will also be violent to the younger rat. Can you get a young rat and take it back to the store/shelter if they don't like each other?
Oh, and it's important to introduce the rats to each other on neutral territory, like a bathtub or something, so the old rat won't feel as threatened.
hey whats up thanks for the reply so i did buy a another rat and they seemed to get along at frist then all hell broke loose the older one was trying to kill it i tried the bath tub idea and they were not really interested in fighting as how to get the hell out of there i heard it takes alot of hard work for u to introduce a rat to another if they don t grow up together.p.s thanks for the help write back if u have any other ideas
i am still going to keep it just would like them to get along
So, did they ever actually get it open :) It's really cute to watch them trying to figure it out. Esspeically Fyodor, he seems really, really into it. I've never given my rats a hard boiled egg but they had a wrestling match with a plastic easter egg once. It was hilariously adorable.
We accidently aquired a male rat from a pet store (It's really hard to tell what they are when they are young!) but we've fixed things and we got two girls and two boys now. The boys are great just...very different from the girls.

Hi! 1) Don't get only 1 rat. These animals are very social and need at least one other of their kind to "talk" to. 2) DO NOT GET A MALE AND A FEMALE UNLESS you are planning to breed them, which in itself, is not easy. Either get two males OR two females. Also be willing to clean their cage once a week, and playing with them on a daily basis. Do NOT get cedar or pine bedding. Get recycled newspaper (Good Mews) instead.
It was but he was the happiest rat I ever saw. When you brught the whipped cream he wold sit there eating it. Sometimes befor eating it he would roll around in it and parade himself a little bit. He was kinda disgusting.

They used to be in a tank with a two-level cage topper. Back then they used the tank as a giant bathroom and stayed up top -- in this case, the egg rolled downstairs. Now they live in a wire cage and free range on top of a table whenever I'm home.

That's good to hear that they r in a wire cage now. The tanks can easily build up harmfull ammonia, which causes respiratory problems.
