Dude. Clopin is SO freaking creepy in this song, especially his laugh at the beginning. And not creepy in a good way. Creepy as in, "I'll be checking under my bed tonight to make sure he's not hiding down there waiting to eat me"
Yes, the French version is more elegant, but that is just due to French being a more elegant language and because the music was originally written for the French lyrics. I think the translating lyricist did an amazing job with the whole show, so much better than other English translations of French musicals (Romeo et Juliette for example)
Some of the words are very awkward and I don't much like the singing, but I do like how they tried to do an almost exact translation. That's very admirable!
I agree about the words being very akward, but allow me to say this in the english's defence. This show was only translated once for a temporary showing in Vegas. Does anyone really expect an honest effort to duplicate the beautiful flow that is in the french versian? In Vegas?
I gotta say it. When it comes to foreign musicals, hearing them in English kinda seems like cheating almost cuz let's face it, the French version sounds absolutely beautiful.
Definitely: French version is much better (Vive Luc Mervil!). It doesn't help that this is just the song in English set to the French vid, so the singer doesn't have the same resonnance.
Wow! This is way closer to the book than the Disney Version! Make it a movie!!!

wow...he's way flat....
