Will this switching layout work in all 4 North South East West directions? Or do you need to be careful when initially designing your station's footprint?

It will work in any direction. You just need to invert the signals to get the cart to turn or bypass as necessary. All the other corner pieces do not move and will stay in the position you lay them down regardless of NSEW(assuming you keep redstone away of course)
