Domo origato! (That`s just about the extent of my Japanese, picked from my daughter in law, born in Okinawa.)
As you can see, I am "old and gray" as well but am enjoying my nine grandchildren and annoying my neighbors with my banjo and bagpipes. I haven`t the nerve to upload the latter to YouTube.
It is indeed wonderful how YouTube allows communication among people all around the world who would never have been able to do so otherwise.
My closest friend had an aortic dissection to correct three aneurisms this past November. He`s doing well but I can see it is a long process. I had four "stents" placed at about the same time, for a total of five after a minor heart "hiccup"; very minor compared to your situation.
papa this song you performd very well i like this one alot my friend said whos this and i said my grandfather and she was very impresed papa i dont care want anybody says you are really good at the banjo! i love you papa! xoxo kyle
Awesome...I love this song! I play a finger picking guitar version of it, usually on a gut string parlor-size guitar...never tried it on the banjo, but it sounds great.
Thanks! I`ve been working on a guitar version too, although I`m a poor guitarist; sold my old (`67 "Brazilian" Martin D-35) a year or so ago as I could never do it justice, then developed "guitar withdrawal"; picked up a sweet little Martin OM21 and am having lots of fun with it. Maybe if I get the nerve I`ll risk humiliating myself and upload a tune or two.....
Jason is amazing. With your eyes shut you`d have a hard time telling it wasn`t Don Reno. Don`s version was the first bluegrass rendition I heard, probably about 1959 or `60. Don`t I wish I could do it as well as Don or Jason...
I have just discovered "Wishuey". I'm a sort of intermediate banjo player; and when I have a lesson and forget the melody from the lesson back to my house, I just crank these videos up and they are really helpful!
Both versions (yours and Bard's) are amazing in their own way...I'm so lucky to have found TWO versions! I heard this song for the first time 6 years ago, and fell in love. I just found it again only recently...Again, thanks!
I hadn`t, until just now. The "Bard" is one talented young fellow and, as I`ve told him, his version puts mine to shame! I have heard a variation of his version which, in some ways, makes better sense when you know the story behind the song.
Thanks so much for telling me about the Bard!
(Check out John McCormack`s version. What a voice!)
Beautiful! I've been looking for this song for years! But the version I know says "when I fist said I loved only you Maggie, and you said you loved only me". Do you know this version also?
I remember a businessman from siliconvalley, who played this song for my request with a banjo, at a smal bar in Tokyo over 30 years ago.
Now I am old and gray, .....
If possible, I wish to meet him and hear this song in his banjo again!

Many thanks to your heart warming answer.
I envy you enjoying your many grandchildren and playing your banjo and bagpipes.
I have no grandchildren, but was attacked by an acute a-type aortic dissection 2 years ago.
Then my only avocation now is making my web-site and describe unforgettable episodes in my 70 year life.
"Maggie" is the first episode, experienced at the age of 18.
Your mail encouraged me to receive enexpected happy contacts from all over the world.
