  • Wow! I didn't realize his voice was this mobile! And his enunciation is incredible, he fits in every consonant and stays on tempo! Bravo bravissimo!

  • Amazing..he is real the best singer..

  • @skvarets you forgot the after pavarottis part

  • Bravo for costimographist! Excepts very beautifull bass-baritone (very rarely case), Thomas Hampson has legs and loins like greek statue (more rarely case).

  • bravo always a great artist

  • Wonderful!

  • Best version I've ever heard. Don't know about the rest of you guys.

  • Thomas is a great singer! =D

  • @DjRomuX Listen to the patter section as the end! You can actually hear the vowels. I'm new to singing opera....but this is unbelievably good.

  • One of the best I've seen... he was really into the role.

  • shit... i thought i'm gonna die when i heard this version of "largo al factotum" from hampson... simply fantastic... incredible... ou man, so good, so good

  • awsome man, ywsome perfomance, he even sings the high A, cool!

  • He's so handsome! And what a singer!

  • i love him

  • Where was this..??

  • Excellent!

  • Il le joue aussi bien qu'il le chante (parfaitement).

  • The young Hampson is excellent in a role precisely suited to his vocal weight and technique:)--

  • @stevevandien vecchio o giovane Hampson e satato sempre " Il Factotum della Mediocritá".

    ah,ah,ah

la ran la la ran la lera...

e sempre stonatissimo e ha sempre la voce bruttissima...

Figaro,Figaro,Figaro uno alla volta per caritá...ahahahahahahahahahah

  • @bodiloto There is nothing mediocre about consistency. If it were just given "mediocre" trait, tenors would have longer careers.

  • @stevevandien I agree :)

  • @stevevandien And he gets his pronunciation and speed to incredible perfection in his slightly later years. Good to see him at the beginning.

Saludos.

  • Is this at the met?

  • due to the size of the stage... I doubt it.

  • absolutely love him in this role. largo al factotum is one of the most demanding arias for a baritone (due to the constant singing of triplets in 6/8 meter at a presto tempo and the nature of the lines, is what i found out the other day!) so anyone who does it this well deserves much credit! go thomas!

  • Not just only the singing but the acting is great. I would go to the theater just to see him act.

  • A baritone with ring in the top extension, I wonder if anyone ever told him he is a tenor. I ask this question seriously, because I believe I am a lyric baritone, am trying out a new voice coach and the guy says I am a tenor because of the ring in my top notes. If anyone has experience or insight, I would be grateful.

  • What do you mean by ring in top notes?

  • I can't hear it when I'm singing, but I think it refers to a higher frequency, which would suggest a lyric voice. Does that sound right?

  • I don't think he is a tenor at all, he is clearly a baritone, plus the clarity in his low notes and register per se definitely give him away as a baritone...

  • completely wrong. just because someone has a lower register doesnt classify them as a baritone. i can go down to the F above low C, but i can hit an F above the high C. so there you go.

  • Sono: If you like this [which IS good] you will LOVE the production with Herman Prey as the Factotum.. It is second to none. It's the production with Luiga Alva. It must be that one. Produced about 1972. I'm sure TH has seen the one with Herman Prey. Give it a view. It's on YouTube...

  • @nineteenforty7

    I love that version!

  • he is a tenor. he admits himself he is a tenor. i study with his teacher, and he said robert never came back to open his higher register, but just continued to do baritone roles. thats what he was happy with

  • yes ,he is a tenor / it's easy to figure that

  • He is not a tenor at all. Do you know anything about proper resonance and buzz? Just because all baritones right now sing by overdarkening and pushing doesnt mean hes not a baritone. He is a baritone, his tessitura is a that of a higher baritone and he has a great upper range, thats all, i mean look at Leonard Warren and Sherrill Milnes, they were clearly baritones with great upper registers as well, this is a similar case. I'm tired of people saying he's a tenor.

  • oh set your baritone pride aside and listen to how he approaches the F, F#, G. show me a baritone that could sing a G like hampson, so open and bright. not a similar case at all. hampson has high C's, milnes doesn't come close to it. you're tired of people saying he's tenor because it's truth and you don't like it. he ADMITS in an interview that he's a tenor. get your sources right and then speak.

  • I'm not joining the discussion, just wanted to mention that Milnes sings a B natural in Rigoletto (B0000041Q2)

  • Ted Danson sings?

  • jajajajajajajajaj yeah

  • Do you mean vibrato? I'm not going to believe you nor disbelieve you, its just info. :)

  • Would you happen to have "Dunque io son" from this production?

  • one of the best figaros ever!!!!Bravissimo!!!

  • good!!!!!

  • What a voice! Also, I think he's the only Figaro I've heard who is so convincingly desperate when he says "Uno a la volta, per carità!"

  • I thought he says "per verita."

  • Sorry, got it. You're right

  • It's "uno alla volta per carità" and "fortunatissimo per verità".

  • Very good performance of one of today's best baritones, although I prefer his version from the Gala at the MET in 1991 (in my opinion this is the best version ever in which he beats even Hermann Prey and all others).

    All the best

  • *swoon* He is such a talented singer, and so handsome too!

I like his younger voice, though as his voice matures it gets better and better.

Thanks for this excellent video :)

  • i prefer Hermann Prey.....but he's good

  • oh, so good! :) even great acting, he has caught the spirit of Figaro^^

  • Bravo! excellent! the best Figaro!!

  • hi coloraturafan you got any other excerpts of this performance in vienna??!! if yes please be so kind and pit them on you tube too. i'm such a hampson fan and would love to see more of him...
