He was born Ricardo Valenzuela-raised in Pacoima, CA. That community has a park and recreation area that is dedicated to him. He was born in the United States and died in plane crash. I may be wrong about this but I believe he died with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong about that.

OK, Lou did none of the singing for that movie; a band called Los Lobos recorded all the songs for the movie and he looks nothing like Ritchie Valens. I'm not saying Lou is a bad actor, I'm just saying he wasn't the best choice for this part. Gary Busey, on the other hand, was perfect for his role as Buddy Holly in the Buddy Holly Story and he sang all the songs. Plus, it is actually Ritchie Valens singing in this recording, don't know if you're confused about that.
