i love the fact that she usually goes for 'smaller' scale but quality movies, and opt out the glamorous blockbuster Hollywood route even if she had or has the opportunity to work in the US after her 'breakthrough' in Happy-Go-Lucky. She's one fine actress, beautiful and talented! Go Sally!

She's lovely. I hadn't seen this interview before. I particularly liked her as the secretary Ping in Ed Reardon's Week on Radio 4, but she was only in series 1 and 3 of that. She was replaced in series 2, 4 and 5 by Barunka O'Shaughnessy who wasn't as good, but Sally's more in demand.

Sally is a splendid character actress and a true credit to her profession by virtue of the way she conducts herself in this interview. She's possibly the most unpretentious individual in her industry. Yet I want to glean why it's taken so long for casting departments to recognise this and cast her in a leading role sooner? I recall seeing her appear in "Twenty thousand streets under the sky" on some obscure channel four years ago and she was superb in that too.

I'm amazed at how gorgeous she looks in this interview. In the film she's pretty, but she looks "normal." As opposed to Hollywood stars who have to look abnormally gorgeous ALL the time no matter what the character.

Mike Leigh chooses actors who can ACT, which means they can play a character which bares no resemblance to them whatsoever.

His method is to encourage them to create a biography for their character and develop each scene through unscripted rehearsals using improvisation.
