I doubt Woody actually believes that rape is less serious than getting beat up. It's like when you're in school, and you have to debate over a topic. Regardless of your feelings on the topic, you have to try and make it seem as appealing or appalling as possible. They agreed rape is worse, but he was at least trying to make a case for it.
