This is my grandparents love song! I miss them so much and sing this song with PRIDE!!! I miss you grandma and i love you grandpa though i never met you i feel i know you through this song! THANK GOD FOR RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN!!!!!
so i just want to say that i am a 2000's kid and i too grew up with these kinds of movies and love them, they place a little joy into my heart. how can you not like them? (still growing)
I think they used magnets to attach the peaches to the trees. They may've been alnico, typically 8 to 12% aluminum, 15 to 26% nickel, 5 to 24% cobalt, up to 6% copper, up to 1% titanium, and the balance iron.
Im nearly sixty and Australian,I remember seeing this for the first time and where I saw it, it was at a picture theatre in Penshurst , Sydney, this movie helped me go from being a dumb kid to adolesence, a work of pure class, talent ,from an era when people had more time to let there soul grow
The film is wonderful. Gordon and Shirley are perfect. Every girl wished she was in Miss Jone's shoes. Every guy wanted to look and sing like Gordon MacRae. I wish they would release the movie again!!
I was so young when I first saw this movie, and I still watch it because it is so good. Gordon MacRae who plays Curly, Rocks. The background scenery and the way that their eye;s appear to light up, is so extrordinarily Good. Bravo
This is my favorite film, probably of all time! Gordon MacRae was, and still is one of the best singers we've ever heard. I can't believe that lots of people from my generation haven't even heard of Gordon MacRae, or even this film! Yet they will happily watch the crap we have to endure, eg high school musical, hannah montana etc. THIS is what you call a musical! :)
Sad. I've lived in Oklahoma my entire life, am very proud of my state, but have never seen this play live or on screen. And I love older stuff, music and movies more than modern entertainment.
@chuckteamster You are so correct! This is among the best music ever written. The lyrical ingenuity and compositional quality is something we never see in current music.
Two absolutely beautiful people singing a beautiful song... I just sat mesmerized watchng and listening to them... Oh where did all the talent go??? Now we have all the talent cranked out by American Idol...
I totally agree with 'HORSES0265". I cringe with the stuff my grandkids are watching. They are so missing out and I try to have them watch the old musicals with me hoping they can enjoy them like I have.
Gordon MacRae -- those looks, that charm, that VOICE -- what a gorgeous hunk of guy. This was an all around wonderful movie but he was the heart of it all.
You are right. When first introduced to Prince Philip she was Princess Elizabeth. He was seventeen and she was fourteen. He was extremely handsome all the girls adored him. However, time passed and Philip and Elizabeth fell deeply in love. They tried to keep their romance a secret so that they could have time together. It is said they were together when this song was played and the glances they exchanged give the game away. It is wonderful that their love is still as strong.
Best version of Oklahoma, in my opinion! I grew up watching Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae in this film. They played these roles to perfection! Love it! Thanks for putting this up BravoDivine!

In one year I will be attending college at SDSU (San Diego State Universty) for Film Directing & Acting. I promise I will the of good entertanment back into Hollywood. Remeber this name (Alana Phillips). I will be the one to bring back great movies like these.
I beleive that my generation is lacking on good entertainment or entertainers. Now a days we don't really have musicals anymore. And movies aren't as classy as they used to be. All movies now adays just talk about Drugs & Sex. What happend to movies that were classy, had song and dance, and gave you a good feeling after you watched them?
" I think I'll go down to the smoke house where Judd's at and see what's so elegant about him that makes all the girls want to go to parties with him"
You are probably right. I had read this about Oklahoma. I saw an interview with Liza Minelli recently. She replaced Dean Martin When Sinatra - Dean -Davis was on tour and Dean got so tired of Sinatra's trying to be young and hip. She said that Davis and her would be rehearing their asses off. Sinatra would arrive just before the performance with no run thru whatsoever and just do it. He aborred rehearsals.
I noticed when they go into the musical numbers that Shirley abstains from the midwest colloquial accent and sings more in "plain" English as those folksy clipped words just don't sound right coming out of her clasically-trained throat. They do sound great from MacCrae though and so he sings through them quite charmingly.
Oh my Oh my, what a wonderful combination Shirley and Gordon. I read that Sinatra was supposed have been Curly. When he arrived where it was to be filmed he didnt like the temperature so he bailed. Lucky for this wonderful musical. Sinatra was no Gordon McRae... no, not ever...I can't even imagine Sinatra as Curly
@strick3769 Neither could the producers. It was Carousel, not Oklahoma!, that Sinatra signed for but then bailed on. And the reasons were more complex than what you stated but youtube's comment length limitation has cut me off trying to explain. Sinatra recorded a complete Carousel soundtrack before quitting and it still exists.
@strick3769 Yes, apparently Frank Sinatra was overly picky, and violent. He was almost as annoying as Marilyn Monroe to the movie business. The movie business just couldn't give them up though, so they put up with it.
@strick3769 I know!! Thank Gad Sinatra quit!!--he would have been totally miscast!! His Hoboken accent in Tulsa--we shudder--but the movie gods smiled here and gorgeous Gordon M. came replaced S.. Also Sinatra did not have a operetta type voice--which the role of Curly really requires--McCrae fills the bill--and how. Best baritone in movie history.
Man where are the people to bring back the good stuff, instead my generation and the ones below us are being brain washed with Hannah Montana, ICarly and other trash like that!!! We need movies like Oklahoma and the Lion King again those were the good days!!! YES I AM A CHILD OF THE 1990'S!!!!! And Gordon MacRae he was so handsome...
@horses0265 it's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it. someone's got to put the child celebrities in their place. someone's got to rise up among all the bad singers and poor idols and show the world real talent. if you ask me, Jackie Evancho would have been a good candidate. but she's too young for now. i guess we'll just have to sit and wait for someone
@horses0265 I'm not a child of the 90's but I like older movies and broadway shows better than the TV shows of today. You guys are so lucky to have been born in a time of glory movies. Wish I was...
@horses0265 He was so short too! Really though, I was born in '86 and grew up on movies like Oklahoma, Court Jester, Camelot, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Phantom of the Opera and so on.... It's something my two children will grow up with as well. It's a shame that these kinds of movies are lost even on my generation.
@horses0265 My heart goes out to you, it really does. But it's not just the music. It's the movies, books, art, television. Such a pity. Young people nowadays will never be exposed to beauty, romance or adventure.
@warwolfii hold on now! not all is lost. not while the young whipper-snappers like horses0265 and I are still around. I'll do everything i can to revolutionize modern culture. just give me 4 years to finish college and ill be set on my way. thats a promise
My whole class did this play for this movie and it was nearly as long! I was Laurey and this really cute guy was Curly. We did this song together and at first we were like "WHAT?! NO WAY! I AIN'T DOING THAT SONG WITH HER/HIM!!!!" but fnally we HAD to cooperate to do the song and at them end he surprised everyone including himself by kissing my cheek at the end. all the parents were like "aw that was cute putting tht in there" but then they figured out tht it wasnt scripted o.O
Fred Zinneman screwed up this movie something awful. He was supposed to cast non-singers with box office star power and dub the singing. If he'd done it like that, Oklahoma would have been just as much of a blockbuster as "South Pacific" or "Camelot".
@joeparkson I disagree--Zinneman did fine. Who did you want for Curly--Robert Mitchum?? And Rod Steiger and Gloria G. are both non--singers so your argument doesn't wash. The movie turned out just fine--raw boned yet melodic--just like the prairie state it depicts.
@surfingpinetrees haha u think that's bad? We did Oklahoma! and the girl playing Annie was kinda chubby, and the guy playing Will was tiny, and the couldn't do the Oklahoma Hello, because he couldn't get his leg over her ROFL
I"m only thirteen, and I've been interested in musicals since I heard about Wicked. I love the Phantom of the Opera, Oklahoma, Wicked, Shrek! Te Musical, Honk, Into the Woods, Fiddler on the Roof, etc. I'm actually performing his is a showcase with my crush, and it's so true! Gosh, it's slighlty embarrassing and cute at the same time.
I was at a great Christmas party a couple of years ago at a home in the Hollywood Hills ... Pretty amazing, lots a huge stars there... but the highlight for me was meeting Shirley Jones and having a wonderful conversation with her and Marty... AND THEN, someone started playing the piano and she sang this song!!! It was classic. She also sang You'll Never Walk Alone and everyone joined. What a night... I think she loved that someone "only" 40 was so into her stuff. What a great evening.
@jules1157 I'm only 20 and have been watching these musicals since I was 8 when my Nana showed me them! I've been hooked ever since! No one makes musicals like these anymore :) Some "youngsters" know what good films and good musicals are!
Oklahoma is probably one of my favourites and Gordon MacRae is swoon-worthy <3
@JaneAustenFan89 I started listening and watching Broadway musical when i was a teenager. This version of Oklahoma! was my first musical! I absolutely love it! YEs I agree. They don't make them like this anymore. wish they do.
Actually I'm plenty intellectual. I just have no interest in learning about Oklahoma's incestuous past. Now as for the state of Oklahoma, the people there probably have the intellectual capacity of a peanut.
How does Gordon McRae manage to have such a warm, rich sound with perfect legatto and yet slouch like that? He's hardly ever standing up straight! What a voice!
Well, the *actual* track was almost certainly recorded separately in a sound studio where Gordon McRae could stand any way he wanted. Actors typically watched a working (silent) cut of the film as they spoke their lines and sang their songs. Then the clean, studio sound was dubbed over the video.
"Collect" here is a regional English expression. It means to fetch or pick up something for somebody. If she leaves her glove at the dance and he "collects" it for her, then people will say they're in love.
They don't make them like Shirley Jones anymore. So beautiful and so talented.

I'll never forget Holly near singing this in concert nearly 20 years ago, giving the song a whole new meaning.:-)

I read somewhere that this was the song Queen Elizabeth II listened to over and over while Prince Philip was courting her. <3 How cute is that??

Here's another song that's better than this awful song by an awesome guy named SickMotherfucker.
I hate Oklahoma!
Yes I fucking do.
All this fucking ignorance
They're so fucking screwed.
Fuuuuck Oklahoma.
Stupid fucking hicks.
God, that guy knows how to write music that truly speaks from the heart.

What a great evening.

why dont the youngsters of today appreciate GOOD MUSIC..at least we know what their singing about,, love it thanks for posting..
jules1157 1 year ago 5
@jules1157 I'm only 20 and have been watching these musicals since I was 8 when my Nana showed me them! I've been hooked ever since! No one makes musicals like these anymore :) Some "youngsters" know what good films and good musicals are!
Oklahoma is probably one of my favourites and Gordon MacRae is swoon-worthy <3

@JaneAustenFan89 God bless your Nana! We must conserve our antecedents, especially when they are of this quality.

What a voice!
trudbol 1 year ago 3
Well, the *actual* track was almost certainly recorded separately in a sound studio where Gordon McRae could stand any way he wanted. Actors typically watched a working (silent) cut of the film as they spoke their lines and sang their songs. Then the clean, studio sound was dubbed over the video.

"Don't start collecting things..."
"Like what?"
"Stamps,bottle caps, Pokemon cards..."
I always expect her to say thattt
Dollypig 1 year ago 7
Collecting things that belonged to her, I believe she meant.
MimmieMimmie 1 year ago
"Collect" here is a regional English expression. It means to fetch or pick up something for somebody. If she leaves her glove at the dance and he "collects" it for her, then people will say they're in love.
ion1122 1 year ago 2
I prefer Little Edie's version!
Especially the way she pronounced the word 'love'...much to her mother's disapproval!
