Bob i hear the galaxy nexus, and the droid razr had pentile displays i mean i love how they are both super amoled and all but i always heard pentile makes things look blocky and grainy, do u get that at all on either phone?
@nuffsaidguy No, I don't get that at all on either phone. HD video looks great on both those displays. I've been in the video industry for many years and have a good idea what constitutes a good image, and both the Galaxy Nexus and the DROID RAZR look very good. Neither has any blocky artifacts I can see.
@Pandakilla970 Hmmm... maybe I will. I used the face lock feature for the few days and it was fun. Dunno that I'd want it on the phone all the time, however.
@wideheadofknowledge Ahh... I think Adobe Flash was added when the OS updated to 4.0.2. I checked the Galaxy Nexus and it definitely runs Flash content.
It's a 4.65 inch display but I'm going to call it 4.7. It's called Ice Cream Sandwich, but I don't like that so I'm going to call it Android 4.0. LMAO!! Good review but you need to get over yourself and call the phone what it is!!!
@Adcd57 Quadrant is an app that you can download for free from the Android Market. When you run it on your phone, it tests your phone's internal components and creates a score. You can use this score to compare your phone with other phones. It's called a "benchmark" test.
Bob, please stop misinforming people. The reason that the Quadrant score is so low is because it has not yet been optimized for ICS. You can definitely tell by the overall perceived performance that this device deserves a much higher score. It is buttery smooth, has no lag, and is certainly fast enough.
question for anyone else who has it, do me a favor and turn on your camera app and point it in a black background and tell me if you see a grey line going across the top and if it gets clearer from right to left. idk if my phone has an issue or if its normal. looks weird. get back to me asap please
The scores are low because it's has 4.0 that's not even out yet on tablets so developers don't have any test for the system but played with one at best buy its super fast and I would have switched to Verizon Friday but didn't know that I didn't have to pay a deposit
Ahh!!! I need help i dont know what phone to get, peoples reviews are knocking me out!!!! AHHH help what phone is best for, music, battery, videos, movies, texting, surfing web, and calling friends, Btw age 13 need a good 1st smart phone!!!
The Galaxy Nexus is a great phone, the only thing that's stopping me from buying the phone is its shitty camera. If the Camera was as good or better than the iPhone 4s than I would choose this phone over the iPhone 4s.
@MINIg435 You do got a point..The only hype around this phone is ics my imo the samsung galaxy s II epic touch has better specs and once it gets ics or any other phone this phone will die out..Dont get me wrong tho the nexus is a good phone but its meh as well
it's getting lower scores because the mali 400 on the SGS2 is almost 2 times faster... , also the hd screen shares the subpixels, that's why i sold my Galaxy Nexus and going to buy a 4s or white SGS2
@Firestormman I appreciate that you have my back... really! I'm a big boy, though, and can take some criticism. I've learned that you can't survive long on the Internet if you are fragile. Good strong comments make me a better reviewer... I like 'em all.
Would like to give a few tips about using Quadrant. It does not currently support multi-core CPUs. CFBench is what the developers are using in most threads. Quadrant is occupationally used but not well recognized when dealing with these new devices. But CFBench is available in the marketplace. It gives you ALOT of info and comparisons to other devices. I'm sure the makers of Quadrant will eventually upgrade it though.
@HerLion11388 Oh and I forgot to say, when doing one of these tests, its best to do a restart of the phone then immidately do the test (maybe do a clearing of currently running apps to stop the ones that start at boot.) this clears the memory and the CPU cache and gives much better results.
The reason that quadrant ran so slow is because quadrant upscales the graphics test to the available resolution of the screen. So since the galaxy nexus has a higher resolution than most phones, it is going to score a little worse due to it's higher resolution
i got the 4s over this 5 days ago and i dont regret it cause i cant be by a charger all day and this thing eats up battery. also this one costs $300. i used to be a faithful android man but now im starting to favor ios just because its so snappy and handles anything smoothly. the only thing i regret about not getting the nexus is the screen.
ICS is great but the Galaxy Nexus hardware is a joke. The fact is if I would have went with the Nexus I would have had to downgrade my hardware to do so. Both the Motorola DROID RAZR and HTC REZOUND blow away the GN in hardware specs now this may be okay with some people but not with me. The Nexus might be the most over rated device yet this year.
@AlphaTeamGoatShit if ur gonna spend that much you shouldnt get anything with significant flaws. and if you ask me a 14 mm thick phone with a battery that doesnt last ALL DAY is a significant flaw. also HTC sense is too heavy and will slow your phone down alot over time. go nexus, everything is better about it + its vanilla android.
Guys, the only spec that any other phone has that's better than the Nexus is the camera. These benchmarking apps are designed for android 2.x, and therefore do not give an accurate reading of the Nexus' cpu/gpu power.
Mate, I noticed three mistakes in the first five minutes of your video. First, you listed the screen as 4.7 inches when it's actually 4.65. Then you claimed it only comes in 32GB versions when you can actually get the GSM SGN with 16gb of storage. Finally, you claimed the notification light is at the top right when it's actually at the bottom centre. I think you need to do a little more homework before posting a review.
@Luke0003 I actually discuss the 4.7/4.65 thing in the video. And the only version officially available in the US is the 32GB version -- anything else is gray market. (The GSM version is not available in the US.) And yeah... I pointed to the wrong location for the notification light. At least I knew it had a notification light.
@wirefly You also state that the "usable resolution" is 720x1184, how is this possible if your accounting for the software buttons. Surely they must take up pixels across the screen too resulting in lower than 720 usable across. Also the notification light error how can you get that wrong having used and tested the phone.
@MarkG11400 The virtual buttons don't eat into the 720 dimension on the display -- they use up some of the 1280 pixels. That's why the resulting display resolution is 720 x 1184. Think of it this way: If you cut a couple inches off a 2-inch wide board, it's still 2 inches wide. It's just not as long.
I've had the Galaxy Nexus for 10 days and have yet to see the notification light operating. I'm sure it's there, though.
Quadrant is not optimized for ics 4.0 yet just like many android apps in the market....also you can see from how smooth the phone is running and as you said "silky smooth" that obviously nexus is faster than more powerful than quadrant says and as we all know quadrant does not really mean anything when it comes to real life usage.
question bob....I noticed that my txt messages from yesterday don't show the time anymore. But after 12am they start showing the time again. Have you noticed anything like this on the phones you tested?
@Cameronbic That's a good tip. However, I tried it and got a slightly better Quadrant score but no big difference (1725 vs. 1600). And I ran it a few times, re-booted the phone, etc.
@jd953479 It's human nature that anticipation is aften sweeter than reality. The Galaxy Nexus is an excellent phone, but the perfect phone has yet to be invented. We can keep anticipating it, however.
@joshuag94 Yeah, you and a couple others mentioned it. I will have to get that update and see how it works. I guess that's what happens when you try to get ahead of the curve on a bleeding-edge product.
but you have to remember, apps are now being optimized for ics. There has been a lot of new code added, and therefore these apps aren't optimized... android 4.0 is optimized for this phone. Its a google phone made with android 4.0. Usually as higher the display, the cores are used more, but these apps aren't used to recognizing dual core's unlike android 4.0 which finally recognizes it properly.
@nishwanth For strange YouTube reasons, I deleted the unboxing video and re-posted it. It's the exact same video. I had in in "unlisted" status for about a week before making it live last night, and holding it as "unlisted" for so long really kills the views that a video gets. So I re-loaded it fresh... it's up now.
IMPORTANT UPDATE - Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwhich, does now SUPPORT FLASH. This is important to many people. Keep in mind the phone wasn't even released in the USA when this video was made, yet everything is updated/supported on the release version. Thanks for reading.
I really believe Verizon has handled the release of the nexus like crap. I understand the phone had problems with the lte radio. But they should have released something to the public.
Great vid Bob I've been waiting for this phone I wanted your honest opinion on which phone would you buy galaxy nexus or dried x and why. Ii really bel
Are you going to review the speaker in Part 2? I like to play Youtube videos and parts of videos on Netflix and wanted to know if the speaker on the Nexus was loud.
@BugattiNinja Yes, I was trying to say that in the video but it just didn't come out right. I saw the same thing with Android 2.3 -- it initially struggled with both Quadrant and Smartbench. I don't want to draw too many conclusions from the scores, except that the Galaxy Nexus seemed to struggle with Quadrant.
@ryanthehitmanhatton Yes, I've hit one of the buttons accidentally many times, on a wide variety of phones. You can see me do that in these videos all the time. That is one of the downsides of capacitive buttons.
@wirefly as have I.. I was just concerned that because the buttons are actually a part of the screen it would be easier to slide your finger over top of them and have an undesired affect when playing a game or even using an application
I've been viewing a lot of galaxy nexus videos and many people said what you were pointing to as proximity and light sensors. For notification light, there seemed a LED glow at the end of the screen (right below the home button from what it seemed).
Here's two videos
1. /watch?v=VshvpiOAhIQ
2. /watch?v=qxhwx13U7HY?t=12s
do u know if that's just something to do with international version vs us version or there's a setting for that? thanks!
@everlasting207 I read on Google's site about the notification light, and I pointed to where I *assumed* the light was. Of course, assuming things is not smart and I got caught with my index finger up my butt. You are almost certainly correct about the location of the notification light.
@wirefly haha i see, I just thought maybe the US version had different notification system. The Three colors are in one bulb from the videos i linked for you it seems? so it creates infinite array of possible colors from RGB. But anyway I always enjoy your reviews Bob! Thanks always!
@jeesuhs It's a mixed bag. I'm not sure that the way Android 4.0 does virtual buttons is the best way, but I like the fact that they are always visible when the display is lit up. No more fumbling around to find dark buttons. I would like the option of moving the buttons around and also keying them over the display, instead of using a dedicated area at one edge of the display.
I really wanted this phone! & still deciding...But I'm think I'm satisfied with my HTC Rezound.Nexus is a lot of hype, still great but no Micro sd, no flash and the not so great camera(megapixels aside) might be the deciding factor
I have a question, I have tons of photos, music, ringtones, and videos all on my 16GB SD card. well I plan to upgrade to the GN, since its memory storage is all integrated with no SD slot. How will I be able to transfer my photos to the GN?
@itzmando You will have to move the files from the SD card into a computer, then you can move them from the computer into the Galaxy Nexus. The good news is that the Galaxy Nexus supports drag-and-drop, so it's easy to do.
@FedexMikeify i've seen other devices, such as Nexus S do all 360 in ICS. Not sure if i've seen galaxy nexus, but because of the on screen buttons, it would be hard to believe it can't do 360.
im gonna run to the verizon store in the morning to pick mine up such a waste of 650+tax which will be another 65 on top but i dont give a shit i still want it
@SPINO852 The best phone for Sprint right now is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. The HTC EVO 3D and Motorola Photon are close behind, however... all nice phones.
@lesterlcmyou Careful, it might not be. Whatever back end software magic Samsung does on the GSII might not work on ICS, in which case it'll end up like the GSI with a file system that caused a laundry list of issues.
would be nice if you knew some things about the phone like that menu key is not really so, its actually the multitasking key which shows your last used apps. Regarding the notification light you're pointing to the wrong location its on the bottom of the phone.
I was going to type "first", but I got an arrow through the knee >.>
Seriously though, the only things that made this phone less desirable for me were no options for external storage and the semi-decent rear camera. Google Music helps ease the pain though.

I don't want to draw too many conclusions from the scores, except that the Galaxy Nexus seemed to struggle with Quadrant.

Hey bob, I am still debating on which phone to get. What would you recommend this phone or the HTC rezound?
BewarA2011 2 months ago

I got a quick question.. when you are playing a game on the phone have you ever hit any of the touch sensitive buttons by accident?
ryanthehitmanhatton 2 months ago
@ryanthehitmanhatton Yes, I've hit one of the buttons accidentally many times, on a wide variety of phones. You can see me do that in these videos all the time. That is one of the downsides of capacitive buttons.
Bob at Wirefly
wirefly 2 months ago
@wirefly as have I.. I was just concerned that because the buttons are actually a part of the screen it would be easier to slide your finger over top of them and have an undesired affect when playing a game or even using an application

Hey Bob
at 4:01 you said three color notification light?
I've been viewing a lot of galaxy nexus videos and many people said what you were pointing to as proximity and light sensors. For notification light, there seemed a LED glow at the end of the screen (right below the home button from what it seemed).
Here's two videos
1. /watch?v=VshvpiOAhIQ
2. /watch?v=qxhwx13U7HY?t=12s
do u know if that's just something to do with international version vs us version or there's a setting for that? thanks!
everlasting207 2 months ago
@everlasting207 I read on Google's site about the notification light, and I pointed to where I *assumed* the light was. Of course, assuming things is not smart and I got caught with my index finger up my butt. You are almost certainly correct about the location of the notification light.
Bob at Wirefly
wirefly 2 months ago
@wirefly haha i see, I just thought maybe the US version had different notification system. The Three colors are in one bulb from the videos i linked for you it seems? so it creates infinite array of possible colors from RGB. But anyway I always enjoy your reviews Bob! Thanks always!

Hey Bob, Your thoughts on the virtual buttons as compared to physical buttons.
jeesuhs 2 months ago

@DonnyDon90 I agree and the specs on the re is better my imo and i wouldnt downgrade

@Willo3G No, not for T-Mobile. At the moment, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is for Verizon only.

I have a question, I have tons of photos, music, ringtones, and videos all on my 16GB SD card. well I plan to upgrade to the GN, since its memory storage is all integrated with no SD slot. How will I be able to transfer my photos to the GN?
itzmando 2 months ago
@itzmando You will have to move the files from the SD card into a computer, then you can move them from the computer into the Galaxy Nexus. The good news is that the Galaxy Nexus supports drag-and-drop, so it's easy to do.

Can the screen rotate 360°?
FedexMikeify 2 months ago
@FedexMikeify nope, can't work upside-down
jocrazi 2 months ago
@FedexMikeify i've seen other devices, such as Nexus S do all 360 in ICS. Not sure if i've seen galaxy nexus, but because of the on screen buttons, it would be hard to believe it can't do 360.

the led is in the center at the bottom of the phone....u pointed at the light sensor -_-

Bob what would you say what's the best Sprint phone out right now ?
SPINO852 2 months ago
@SPINO852 The best phone for Sprint right now is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. The HTC EVO 3D and Motorola Photon are close behind, however... all nice phones.

Galaxy s2 update 4.0 will be better than this!!!
lesterlcmyou 2 months ago
@lesterlcmyou Careful, it might not be. Whatever back end software magic Samsung does on the GSII might not work on ICS, in which case it'll end up like the GSI with a file system that caused a laundry list of issues.

@RomeoValentino I wouldn't call it bloatware but yes, 2 apps. You can disable them though

How about the software.
lrobles787 2 months ago
Does it have Verizon bloat wear on it?
RomeoValentino 2 months ago
would be nice if you knew some things about the phone like that menu key is not really so, its actually the multitasking key which shows your last used apps. Regarding the notification light you're pointing to the wrong location its on the bottom of the phone.
teamflowerninja 2 months ago
I was going to type "first", but I got an arrow through the knee >.>
Seriously though, the only things that made this phone less desirable for me were no options for external storage and the semi-decent rear camera. Google Music helps ease the pain though.
