As a band I like led zeppelin better than deep purple BUT as a guitar player I have to go with blackmore. Page was amazing too don't get me wrong however Blackmore had it all in technicality, speed & delivery. Page had blues scales & sloppy overruns that sounded good to the ear but that was it.

Awesome vid! These guys are the ones I listened to back in the day.As a long time struggling guitar player, I am in awe of the whole Clapton, Paige, Beck, Blackmore, Trower, Richards, Harrison (and others) thing that was going on back then. This vid made me remember how good Ritchie Blackmore was. Paige was a pioneer of sorts in his own right, but Ritchie, I think could out-solo Jimmy 6 days of the week.

Technically i think Blackmore steals the show, but Page's feel is what makes him one of the best guitarists to ever walk the earth. I look at it in three catergories:
Influence- Page
Feel- Page
Technical Ability- Blackmore
Both are phenomenal guitarists and deserve to be remembered throughout guitar history, but Page's kick ass riffs and emotional solos win the day :)
Blackmore crush's Page in all categories. Creativity, Improvisation, Fluidity, Emotion, whatever else you want to put in there Ritchie was and still is the most underrated guitarist of all-time. Go and listen to Gates of Babylon or Stargazer, or even A light in the black and after listening to those songs if you still think Page is a better guitarist...you're nuts.
Blackmore's solos are in the stratosphere whereas Page is slogging around sea level. As for rythm, I much prefer the playing of Blackmore. That's my opinion, it's not science, it's art. They both have their strong points. One is not a better player than the other, just different.

Whereas Blackmore, quite simple, didn't play rhythm. The extent of his rhythm playing was his hammering double stops on the E and A strings whilst John Lord played the chords and fills. Disagree? Direct me to Backmore's rhythm parts that compare w/ Pages work on "Sick Again," "Achilles Last Stand," or "Ten Years Gone."

Blackmore is technically better, but I've always found him slightly boring. If I want arppegios and fugues, I'll listen to Bach. Page, for all his faults, is quite possibly the most emotionally expressive guitarist I've ever heard. Listen to "Achilles's Last Stand," "Ten Years Gone," "Tea for One," "I'm Gonna Crawl," . . .despite the rock star trappings the man bares his soul through his guitar.

Fer my tuppence, Blackmore wins on sheer musicality and versatility (especially considering his post-70s - through - 201x work), though Paige and his mates obviously took their chops to the bank and (mostly) retired.
Ive always been more impressed with Pages acoustic playing more than on the electric guitar,have never heard Blackmore play much acoustic guitar though.
They were both sloppy. However, I have seen both live many times, and I have to admit Blackmore was far more impressive every time. I was most often disappointed in Page's performances. Having played lead guitar for over twenty-five years, I'd say I'm a fair judge in this contest. I also highly doubt Page could have pulled off that Concerto for Group and Orchestra with as much professionalism and conformity to the orchestration as Blackmore did.
@IshadaKatzteilov I would say you're a totally lame judge.The Concerto was a great idea,but that was back before Purple had figured out how to conform with an orchestra at all.They almost never played together,either the orchestra would be playing or the group and never anything similar.When Blackmore played his main solo,he did it alone,played the same thing over and over again and for so long it's considered a joke by today's guitarists.He had not mastered the guitar yet at all back then.
I prefer Jimmy page, but out of the solos you posted, Blackmore's are better overall. If you had included Achilles Last Stand or Since I've Been Loving You, Jimmy's stuff would have been better. Blackmore is awesome, but I think Page had more great solos, and the best of Page is better than the best of Blackmore.

The Burn solo, starting at 1:52, is doubtful that Page could play it that precisely. Thing is, while Blackmore could play most anything Page did, I don't think Page could play much of Blackmore's stuff...

Technically i think Blackmore steals the show, but Page's feel is what makes him one of the best guitarists to ever walk the earth. I look at it in three catergories:
Influence- Page
Feel- Page
Technical Ability- Blackmore
Both are phenomenal guitarists and deserve to be remembered throughout guitar history, but Page's kick ass riffs and emotional solos win the day :)

Blackmore crush's Page in all categories. Creativity, Improvisation, Fluidity, Emotion, whatever else you want to put in there Ritchie was and still is the most underrated guitarist of all-time. Go and listen to Gates of Babylon or Stargazer, or even A light in the black and after listening to those songs if you still think Page is a better guitarist...you're nuts.

Blackmore's solos are in the stratosphere whereas Page is slogging around sea level. As for rythm, I much prefer the playing of Blackmore. That's my opinion, it's not science, it's art. They both have their strong points. One is not a better player than the other, just different.

Rhythm playing consists of playing chords & in riffing. And there is no "discussing" because there's nothing to discuss. Page was a great rhythm player in his day. Whereas Blackmore, quite simple, didn't play rhythm. The extent of his rhythm playing was his hammering double stops on the E and A strings whilst John Lord played the chords and fills. Disagree? Direct me to Backmore's rhythm parts that compare w/ Pages work on "Sick Again," "Achilles Last Stand," or "Ten Years Gone."

I like both guitarists but personally I prefer Ritchie Blackmore to Page simply b/c he seems to be the more versatile player by comparison. That's my opinion take it or leave it. Blackmore is technically better, but I've always found him slightly boring. If I want arppegios and fugues, I'll listen to Bach. Page, for all his faults, is quite possibly the most emotionally expressive guitarist I've ever heard. Listen to "Achilles's Last Stand," "Ten Years Gone," "Tea for One," "I'm Gonna Crawl," . . .despite the rock star trappings the man bares his soul through his guitar.

Ive always been more impressed with Pages acoustic playing more than on the electric guitar,have never heard Blackmore play much acoustic guitar though.

They were both sloppy. However, I have seen both live many times, and I have to admit Blackmore was far more impressive every time. I was most often disappointed in Page's performances. Having played lead guitar for over twenty-five years, I'd say I'm a fair judge in this contest. I also highly doubt Page could have pulled off that Concerto for Group and Orchestra with as much professionalism and conformity to the orchestration as Blackmore did.

@IshadaKatzteilov I would say you're a totally lame judge.The Concerto was a great idea,but that was back before Purple had figured out how to conform with an orchestra at all.They almost never played together,either the orchestra would be playing or the group and never anything similar.When Blackmore played his main solo,he did it alone,played the same thing over and over again and for so long it's considered a joke by today's guitarists.He had not mastered the guitar yet at all back then.

I prefer Jimmy page, but out of the solos you posted, Blackmore's are better overall. If you had included Achilles Last Stand or Since I've Been Loving You, Jimmy's stuff would have been better. Blackmore is awesome, but I think Page had more great solos, and the best of Page is better than the best of Blackmore.

and its not a measure of guitar skillfullness.
queen and black sabbath got in recently and they had sold out more stadiums and influenced more music than all the hall members combined.

The Burn solo, starting at 1:52, is doubtful that Page could play it that precisely. Thing is, while Blackmore could play most anything Page did, I don't think Page could play much of Blackmore's stuff...

i find page more bluesy while ritchie much more classical.technically,blacmores material to play on guitar blows pages stuff away,but...wle its harder to play and all,i find page to be a better song writer makinghim a better musican,and inmy book the superior guitarist.
