every one commenting here is a idiot, one you can use a ladder just not a single side latter, cause yes the rest of the branch can move, Secondly just a under cut with hinge wood, are you serious, go back into the woods with your bullshit, its called a horizontal breaking cut, so you can set you saw to your side after cutting and you snap the over lapping cut fibers, that way its all controlled
@chadborden1 I was gonna say! When using any chain saw, BOTH feet HAVE to stay on the ground. Use a pole saw. Too far up? Hire someone w/a truck-mounted cherry picker. I go up ladders all the time w/my Husky 55 and my Echo pole saw, but with 36 years experience and a brain that functions, I can do it and know when I shouldn't. These clowns probably buy a $89 purple/green (can't think of the model) Poulan at WalMart and don't read the owners manual and end up here. Or graveyard.
As a tree care professional I would only use a ladder for small tree/limb pruning and would be strapped in at that.. On large trees a climbing line to repel down and strap into your work area, have all the necessary safety gear. The ladder could have been tied to the limb and worker tied to the large horizontal limb, even that would be iffy!
Even an undercut wouldn't be a foolproof way of preventing this, the branch can still swing on the remaining hinge wood or sapwood. Ladders and chainsaws should never be used together, ever. Hire a professional (safer and cheaper) or learn the proper cuts , buy the right gear and do it yourself (riskier and more expensive unless you have a lot of trees to work on).
this is so typical accident going back since ladders were invented. and wives, Letting your husband do something like this with no safety gear and then filming it. after posting this who would sell them life insurance?
Yikes. Undercut might have helped but that sort of removal is never done on a ladder under any circumstances. Rope and harness is cheaper than Hospital or cemetery .
This was a co-worker in this accident. His name is Bill and he was pretty sore and beat up after the accident. I hate it too when people stop filming! His wife filmed it and I think it's hard to keep filming when it's someone you care about getting hurt.
I'm an arborist and people like you that do things like this without the proper knowledge of the procedures is why I make a great income. Next time harness yourself to the ladder, if using a ladder, and strap the ladder to the tree. This would only take a couple minutes and still take you for a ride, but you would still be in the tree and not on the ground. Better luck next time.......
@kentwhoo People who don't understand how trees react when they are cut and the different cutting techiques to use with a chain saw just shouldn't do it in the first place. I've seen professionals get hurt doing it.

rule number one...tie off the ladder to a part of the tree you are not cutting off!!!
rule number two...tie yourself off to the ladder!!!
have fun...but if things get dicey...drop the saw...repairing it is cheaper than repairing you!!!
