  • I didnt watch in high-quality. what are you going to do about it?

  • @muddwell Well, I was gonna come up with a cool insult but I see you're a Les Clapool fan, so I'll give you that one. You win Sir.

  • @11111phil11111 I just rewatched it in high-quality. I think drums are the real winner, 111111phil1111 .. drums.

  • Wow! Great drumming! Wish I could drum as good as you do! Great editing too.

  • Ah, come on, man!!! "Knocking shit out a set"? Let's face it. This guy has a lot of energy and great skill.

  • i like your video ....im a new drummer and this makes me depressed ...lol i feel like i will never play as good as you........ sometimes practicing i feel lost

  • @peachesval Thanks a lot. I remember feeling like that. Well, I didn't have any lessons and I never sit down and "practice". I just play along to songs and rock out. Practicing is boring. Just do whatever you want, set your kit up however you want and have fun. You'll get there. I did. Thanks again.

  • awesome very very very very cool

  • @mikaxdlol Thank you

  • Nice job but edited at 0:25?

  • Comment removed

  • nice job great energy but i just wish you had used your toms more

  • @bbub123 Thanks for watching. I'll try and put the toms in more next time.

  • You are absolutely nuts and crazy dude! But so cool and so a good drummer - respect! Best scene is at the end, the sequence in front of your nightly christmas tree... and one question: Are you actor in the blue man group? If not you should be :)

  • @TimoPlaysDrums Thanks a lot! Thanks for watching. I love blue man group. I've never auditioned but I think it'd be a good gig. Thanks again.

  • just seems to me like you're knocking shit out a set of drums - no finesse

  • @MrCIMASTUDENT I guess you're in to those solos where it's just someone gently tapping a ride for the first 4 minutes and pulling a 'jazz face'. Go watch something else.

  • Hey Phil, is the part from 5:00 to 5:34 a part of Geek U.S.A? Sounds great by the way. =)

  • What the FUCK!? Are you people really talking shit to this AMAZING drummer? I hope a fucking car plows into you on your way to school or work or whatever the fuck you do in your boring, pathetic existance. This guy is fucking great. Who gives a fuck about the edits? He's showing off his skills, which deserve much praise. You want to see him play unedited? Go watch his flawless Smashing Pumpkin covers. Phil, don't listen to any of these idiots. They don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

  • @GrockJake wow thanks. Nice of you to verbally kick the shit out of them. I appreciate that. Thank you!

  • Thanks a lot. Glad you like it.

  • really dig your style

  • wtf u dont cross ur hands when on hihat and snare?

  • @maxqd3 no

  • Very impressive speed and dexterity. Unfortunately, like so many guys with "high powered" rudiments and speed; the entire solo is one big grand finale with virtually no feel or musicality. In the words of the great Buddy Rich "A drum solo should have a beginning, a middle and an end". You should first establish that you are a musician that can create musical rhythms. Build your solo from the ground up. After all, you are performing for an audience, not just other drummers.

  • @akrause2004 I don't wanna build a solo. Usually people with built solos just play the same polished piece for 20 years. Or just tap the ride for 3 minutes pulling a silly "into it" face. I just wanna rock out. I'm not performing for an audience. I'm playing for me and if people wanna watch it, cool. But I'm not playing what I think everyone else wants to hear. Sorry.

  • I stopped watching after noticing the first edit. Lame.

  • @lateralusman87 After you "noticed" the first edit? I'm not trying to hide them you idiot. Go fuck yourself.

  • rivendell garden centre improv?! Some people are going to be surprised by this video!

  • @guitashamilele Haha yeah it's just where I work. Thought other people who work there may type in the name or something. Thanks for watching.

  • Seen better...

  • wow awesome stuff. you shoulda been the new pumpkins drummer

  • hahahaha so awesome!

    chillin guy

  • Dude that's sick.

  • @BlackTeddies Thanks a lot

  • You really like to do the drum roll and hit your ride lol GOOD JOB

  • On the sets that you use drum pads, are those Remo? and those electric cymbals........do you really like the feel of them or do you use'em to keep the neighbors nice.

  • On the sets that you use drum pads, are those Remo? and those electric cybals........do you really like the feel of them or do you use'em to keep the neighbors nice.

  • I recognized bit and pieces of The Smashing Pumkpins songs there, by the way! :)

  • Awesome! I love the more groovy parts, as the one around 1:10. There are even some gravity blast beats in the video! Nice!

  • @lgalicki Thanks a lot! Thanks for watching!

  • You need your own signature sticks, so get huge in Cedar Falls so I can buy your signature sticks! :D

  • how did you learn to drum roll like that!!?? im still working on my rolls and ive been playing for over a year. and i still need to buy my own set haha

  • @mannyu26 Don't worry. I played for about 3 years before I had my own set. As for the rolls, I always wanted to roll fast but couldn't. I never sat down and practiced them, they just came over time. So be patient and you'll get them eventually. Thanks again.

  • @mannyu26: Phil's right, speed will come with time and practice. Just keep your forearms relaxed and your palm's facing down.

  • @mannyu26

Just rudiments bro, just give it lots of time and practice and you'll be rolling like Chamberlin' in no time!

There IS a youtube channel that's worth checking out that has all the drum rudiments posted on it as well! It's helped me quite a bit before I started getting lessons.

  • @gergenfonchen do you know what channel it is? :)

  • @mannyu26

    The channel is called 'Drumrudiments'

Check it out, the only thing is that the sticking patterns are listed in the descriptions so you've gotta comb the comments for them.

Aside from that, the other piece of advice I can give is practice to a click (Metronome) as much as you can! People LOVE drummers who can play solidly to a click :D

  • seems to me like a pretty solid christmas morning

  • Because your not like most drummers on you tube, double bass all the time. That i can do. But you use more with your hands which is more intresting to watch. And sounds very good indeed. Well done and keep up the excellent work :-) rock on.

  • @DrummingAli93 Wow thanks! That's really kind of you. Thanks a lot for watching

  • Wow very very creative. Nice cymbals i use AAX to rocking. It is amazing and uniquie this solo. I have subscribed too.

  • @DrummingAli93 oh cool. Thanks a lot for watching. I'm glad you like it. Thanks for taking the time.

  • some of those fills r on Life Begins Again. great album. not as crisp as Jimmy's but damn good

  • very good my friend. I especially liked the dark scene. Must've been a very merry christmas indeed HA!

  • sounds a lot like Samba. You're very skilled friend.

  • @baghaturyan thank you. Thanks for watching

  • the name says it all

  • @JCustomZ Thanks!

  • Hey Phil, forgive me on the Power Station reference. The quality on here isn't enough to appreciate what I was saying. Besides, "Bang a gong" was a better exampe of his power. I know you get shit loads of responses to your uploads and I'm not trying to waste your time. Great solo from you I must say. Thanks for the upload.

  • @Msumner316 You're not wasting my time at all. Thanks a lot. I have to go to work in a minute but I'll check out the songs when I get a chance. They sound cool. Thanks again.

  • dumb question, have you ever heard the workingman/finding my way live Rush of Neil Peart? Another is Stings "I burn for you" live with Omar Hakim from weather report playing drums. One other drummer I'd like you to see for POWER is Tony Thompson formerly of the 70's band Chic. He played with power station and the sound was as powerful as I've ever heard. Youtube "Some like it hot" by powerstation and explain how he got the sound he did please.

  • you edited this, also use more dynamics, its always so fuckin loud. just chops and rudiment practice, make something more compositional, use your imagination.

  • @hainesworld1 How about go fuck yourself and no, before you come back with your lame reply, you're right, I don't like 'constructive criticism'.

  • Awesome!!!i love to watch u play!!

  • Thanks!

  • you are one of the most "active" drummers I have seen. You play as if you could be upfront much like Neil Peart is in his performance. My first time seeing you was the Cherub Rock clip some time ago. I loved the "Chocolate Rain" take that you did, and that is exactly what I mean by "active". I'm a big fan of Omar Hakim, Peart, Terry Bozzio, and Buddy Rich. Who are your most influential drummers on your style?

  • Oh wow. thanks a lot. Glad you liked it. My main influences are Jimmy Chamberlin who was with Smashing Pumpkins. Other than that I'd have to say Anton Fig, Brain Mantia and Tim Alexander. Again, thanks a lot for watching.

  • I had to rewind to 4:00 three times. Once to login and resume listening, and twice because I couldn't believe my ears.

  • Haha thank you

  • i read some of the comments about needing a drum teacher, and i think that's great; but i feel compelled to at least mention one name- jojo mayer. you won't find anyone with more skill than that guy and he is completely self taught.

  • @kennykensworth

Don't try to level of not having a drum teacher. Jojo Mayer is a natural talent who has been playing since 1.5 years old and has also taken lessons (admittedly) in his DVD. Having an instructor and also getting a music education is PRICELESS PERIOD. You can hear this guy is self taught, his dynamic range is lacking, along with musicality. Somewhat competent rudimentary and independence-wise, but lacking in some areas too.

  • i heard some geek usa in there :P

  • Haha yeah

  • What kind of sticks do you use? I know you've answered that somewhere else, but I forgot where

  • I always use Vic Firth X5A. They're a bit longer than most sticks although I'm losing faith in them as they seem to snap easily.

  • Heh, that might be a problem to me as I'm a bit of a heavy hitter, but I think I'd like the extra length, I might try 'em out

  • actually "iamcraiger"..........your wrong........i guarantee you that most of the rock drummers and other drummers couldnt read music.........they didnt even wirte their songs.......they memorized them a lot of times right before the recorded it in studio

  • Quit torturing the drums for gawd's sakes.

And quit torturing your neighbors with spasmodic drumming.

You have a natural talent. Get a good teacher. Mellow out. Get some space between the notes.

Learn to hold a beat so some other musicians will want to hook up with you and jam.

It's not all about the rolls, there's got to be some "butter" in there too.

    Slow your roll soldier.

Quit spasing out. Ever see the movie Meatballs?

They chanted his name over and over, "Spas, Spas, Spas."

  • Fuck you dude this guy is probably the best drummer on youtube. I'd like to see you do better

  • I agree. This guy is NOT a BAD drummer, but he seems hell bent on, as you say, cramming everything together. Try listening to SImon Phillips, or Carmine Appice. They make every single note stand on it own. This guys drumming needs to "take a breath" every now and then.

  • @JoeJacari

Truth be told. You said it and said it respectfully. Give credit where it is due and point in the right direction..

  • Lessons are for losers.

    This guy's better than Weckl.

Keep up the great work. Teach. Make money.

Oh, that's right. Lessons are for losers.

Ever hear of space between the notes?

Or is the objective to cram and crunch as many notes as you can into the shortest amount of time/space?

Not bad but an experienced drum teacher would have to help you to learn to stroke the drums, hold the sticks right and get grounded.

  • Fuck You

  • What the hell you on bout lessons are for loosers you know nothign bout drumming asswipe and all the best got lessons FUCK YOU

  • wouldn't mind trying the chamberlin snare

  • i like all yur sybals

  • wow dude iive been playing for four years now with outt lessons you rock !!!!!!1

  • Thank you!

  • @11111phil11111 hey your drumming great ive been playing for about 4 months now i was thinking of getting teacher just to teach me music theory what do you think? and also how long have you been playing for?

  • Thanks a lot. I've been playing for about 5 years now. I never bothered with lessons or anything like that. I can't read music either. I just play by ear. It may be for some people but it just isn't for me. So although I personally wouldn't bother, it's up to you. Good luck with it and thanks again.

  • you don't need any teachers ;)

  • haha thanks

  • hey phill have you ever had a teacher?

  • Never took a lesson in my life. Waste of money. I just sat there and hit things until it sounded good. Didn't even have drums for the first few years. Just hit cans with bamboo canes

  • oh i had a insturcter for 1 yr then i left he tought me how to read notes

  • lessons are a waste of money? No offense, but it would benefit you greatly.

  • No they wouldn't. You just pay some 40 something guy a lot of money to tell you how to hold a drumstick properly. If you can't hold a drumstick, drums aren't for you. Plus, there's always the scenario...who taught the first drummer teacher how to play?

  • wow, again no offense... But thats a total load of crap. If you found a good drum teacher your playing would improve drastically.

  • As true as that may be, maybe he just wants to have fun jammin' on the drums. I personally don't like being told what to do and most of the progress I've made has been from me trying out shit on my own, not from what other people are saying is the "proper way". In fact I know a guy who takes lessons. He sucks. I don't and I'm WAY better. Not bragging just stating.

  • AMEN

  • And on top of that, when taking lessons, the drummer starts to take on the teacher's style. You lose a bit of individuality as a drummer and lose authentic character in your music. You only have imitated character.

  • Hey, Im certainly not telling this dude what to do, but I can certainly say anyones playing would improve with guidance from a good teacher.... ill say it again - a "good" teacher, even better - a "good" 40year old teacher... its a no-brainer - you'll get nowhere if you cant read music!

  • @iamcraiger well some ppl just find it fun to play! reading music is not needed! the drummer for incubus cant read music! he tought himself everything and look at him now!

  • @flashvideomasta the proper way can be alot more difficult, that's why someone doing it the right way could be considered better than someone with a sloppy technique

  • good job

  • that was insane! man, that was some of the best playing ive seen in a while :)

  • Thanks a lot!

  • wow man that is hella tight drum playin

  • Thanks!

  • You're right man...way too heavy on the snare...

  • sorry let me restate that: it was great but in my opinion there was too much snare. maybe you could incorporate more toms. i thought that the part at 2:35 with the additional snare thing was awesome tho

  • Thanks a lot. Yeah, I'd just got a new snare when I recorded it so many I just got over excited haha. Thanks again.

  • Don't tell lies x

  • id love to see you play that faggot

  • Dude you make it look so effortless, great skills man. you should defnatly be gettin paid to play music

  • Thank you! Thanks for watching

  • you play very good i really dont undertand the man that say you about the story oO but very nice skils what you have down the ride ? its another snare ?

  • Thanks a lot. That's very kind of you. Yeah, it's another snare under the ride.

  • where is the GROOVE..where is the down beat...advice, Try to tell a story...a be more dynamic...its not the skill cause you can play..but musiclywise..in doesnt make anysence....

  • Tell a STORY?! FUCK OFF!

  • @maigera hahah there is no point in telling this stupid talentless motherfucker called phil anything, that bitch will never be any good if he doesnt take any advice

  • @luiggiibanez Advice? You're probably 13 years old or something. Fuck you. This will be my last reply. I'm too busy.

  • they picked you for sp becasue billy didnt want to be the only bald one hahah jk but good job though

  • this is so so. too repetitive and not very musical

  • Great drumming. But Kenny Aronoff for SP!!!

  • so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

    U ROCK

  • Thanks!

  • You really need to learn some knew beats and fills dude.

  • at 5:00 => smashing pumpkins Geek USA

  • Your an Amazing drummer...seriously dude!

  • Thank you!

  • Very nice work ! You've got some creative ideas there and really good chops to pull it all off. Bravo! I enjoyed watching this clip. I have a few on here as well (old jazz style) - worth a watch.

  • Wow, thanks a lot for watching. Glad you like it.

  • amazing 5*

  • WHAT THE HELL??

    Thats just alomost sick!!!

    freaking banana-awesome

  • well rude

  • WOW thats a hell of a set O.O

  • this baby is goin on my favorites

  • Haha thank you

  • good shit ..

  • Amazing!! Maybe just a bit chaotic. But very tight and a great technique.

    Five stars!!

  • For some reason my replys never get posted right, so to reply to woody1445, lets see you play better, and faster. Dont give me any of that "hardcore, deathcore, some kind of core" metal bullshit. This guy can play more than blast beats.

  • haha! Yeah, they love talking about death metal drummers don't they? I never usually reply to them. So boring. Thanks a lot

  • dude, you are fucking amazing, how long did it took you to get that good?

  • Oh thank you. I've been playing about 15 years now

  • too much snare and too much repatition, use more of the kit more of the time

  • Comment removed

  • I agree w/ your comment it would be more credible if I knew you could spell..."repatition". And don't try to say it was a mistake because the 'e' and 'a' aren't even next to one another...lol. JK!

  • Hey gl with the pumpkins audtion, and btw, what kind of china do you have?

  • oh yeah good luck w the pumpkins thing

  • dude ur amazin

  • thanks a lot!

  • Dude i admire you!!

    you are a legend

  • Oh thank you! Thanks a lot for watching.

  • I'm beginning to think left handed drumming on a mostly right hand setup... is better than traditional setups :O

  • Holy cow! Phil's drumming reminds me of Jimmy Chamberlin's in a very positive way. Now my own self-esteem sank really low behind the drum set.

  • phil, you remind me of that drummer from Presidents Of The United States Of America

  • shitload ass of cymbals. lol

  • demasiado bueno geekusa a 5:00 , tremendo solo

  • How did you get that snare on a tom stand? Awesome drum solo!!!

  • Thanks a lot. It's just another snare stand.

  • Is that a Chamberlin Signature Snare?

  • Yeah. I'm not a big fan of it actually. It's not really the sound I was hoping for.

  • What does it sound like with a coated head on? I think with the clear head you have it just isn't projecting well; sounds kinda flat.

Awesome playing though man, I've seen a ton of your videos and I'm a fan of Cedar Falls. Can't wait til you guys make it to the big time. I'm gonna be watching you on David Letterman one of these days lol

  • haha thank you! Thanks a lot! As for the snare, I've tried 4 different heads with it. Some coated, some not. I mean it's probably the perfect snare for someone else but for me I like snares that ring a lot. This seems to be a pretty flat snare in general whatever the tuning or heads you're using. Thanks again.

  • Ok, thanks for the advice on the snare. I'll make sure I check one out in person before I decide to buy it; as they do cost quite a pretty penny for someone with no money like me haha :P

And no problem, looking forward to more awesome vids and the album.

  • cool very particular style and feel, i dig it

  • Thanks!

  • do you have a double bass pedal because around 4minutes 20seconds it sounds like it and also how do you hit so fast with only one hand??

  • I don't use a double bass pedal these days. This is just a single pedal. I don't understand the second part. Sounds like you're saying I only have one hand haha. Which part do you mean?

  • Ur hands is pure drummer's hand. BEAUTIFUL drum solo. Very fast hands and awesome beats. Keep up dude

  • Thank you. Thanks a lot for watching

  • x´D

  • Awesome! I like the little Geek USA you put in there and Drumbone. Keep drumming!

  • yeah you rock!

  • Awesome! Thank you!

  • Phil, you really have your chops and use your wrists. That is a rare occurence here on YouTube. Awesome drum solo!
