i like your video ....im a new drummer and this makes me depressed ...lol i feel like i will never play as good as you........ sometimes practicing i feel lost
@peachesval Thanks a lot. I remember feeling like that. Well, I didn't have any lessons and I never sit down and "practice". I just play along to songs and rock out. Practicing is boring. Just do whatever you want, set your kit up however you want and have fun. You'll get there. I did. Thanks again.
You are absolutely nuts and crazy dude! But so cool and so a good drummer - respect! Best scene is at the end, the sequence in front of your nightly christmas tree... and one question: Are you actor in the blue man group? If not you should be :)
@MrCIMASTUDENT I guess you're in to those solos where it's just someone gently tapping a ride for the first 4 minutes and pulling a 'jazz face'. Go watch something else.
What the FUCK!? Are you people really talking shit to this AMAZING drummer? I hope a fucking car plows into you on your way to school or work or whatever the fuck you do in your boring, pathetic existance. This guy is fucking great. Who gives a fuck about the edits? He's showing off his skills, which deserve much praise. You want to see him play unedited? Go watch his flawless Smashing Pumpkin covers. Phil, don't listen to any of these idiots. They don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
Very impressive speed and dexterity. Unfortunately, like so many guys with "high powered" rudiments and speed; the entire solo is one big grand finale with virtually no feel or musicality. In the words of the great Buddy Rich "A drum solo should have a beginning, a middle and an end". You should first establish that you are a musician that can create musical rhythms. Build your solo from the ground up. After all, you are performing for an audience, not just other drummers.
@akrause2004 I don't wanna build a solo. Usually people with built solos just play the same polished piece for 20 years. Or just tap the ride for 3 minutes pulling a silly "into it" face. I just wanna rock out. I'm not performing for an audience. I'm playing for me and if people wanna watch it, cool. But I'm not playing what I think everyone else wants to hear. Sorry.
On the sets that you use drum pads, are those Remo? and those electric cymbals........do you really like the feel of them or do you use'em to keep the neighbors nice.
On the sets that you use drum pads, are those Remo? and those electric cybals........do you really like the feel of them or do you use'em to keep the neighbors nice.
how did you learn to drum roll like that!!?? im still working on my rolls and ive been playing for over a year. and i still need to buy my own set haha
@mannyu26 Don't worry. I played for about 3 years before I had my own set. As for the rolls, I always wanted to roll fast but couldn't. I never sat down and practiced them, they just came over time. So be patient and you'll get them eventually. Thanks again.
Just rudiments bro, just give it lots of time and practice and you'll be rolling like Chamberlin' in no time!
There IS a youtube channel that's worth checking out that has all the drum rudiments posted on it as well! It's helped me quite a bit before I started getting lessons.
Check it out, the only thing is that the sticking patterns are listed in the descriptions so you've gotta comb the comments for them.
Aside from that, the other piece of advice I can give is practice to a click (Metronome) as much as you can! People LOVE drummers who can play solidly to a click :D
Because your not like most drummers on you tube, double bass all the time. That i can do. But you use more with your hands which is more intresting to watch. And sounds very good indeed. Well done and keep up the excellent work :-) rock on.
Hey Phil, forgive me on the Power Station reference. The quality on here isn't enough to appreciate what I was saying. Besides, "Bang a gong" was a better exampe of his power. I know you get shit loads of responses to your uploads and I'm not trying to waste your time. Great solo from you I must say. Thanks for the upload.
@Msumner316 You're not wasting my time at all. Thanks a lot. I have to go to work in a minute but I'll check out the songs when I get a chance. They sound cool. Thanks again.
dumb question, have you ever heard the workingman/finding my way live Rush of Neil Peart? Another is Stings "I burn for you" live with Omar Hakim from weather report playing drums. One other drummer I'd like you to see for POWER is Tony Thompson formerly of the 70's band Chic. He played with power station and the sound was as powerful as I've ever heard. Youtube "Some like it hot" by powerstation and explain how he got the sound he did please.
you edited this, also use more dynamics, its always so fuckin loud. just chops and rudiment practice, make something more compositional, use your imagination.
you are one of the most "active" drummers I have seen. You play as if you could be upfront much like Neil Peart is in his performance. My first time seeing you was the Cherub Rock clip some time ago. I loved the "Chocolate Rain" take that you did, and that is exactly what I mean by "active". I'm a big fan of Omar Hakim, Peart, Terry Bozzio, and Buddy Rich. Who are your most influential drummers on your style?
Oh wow. thanks a lot. Glad you liked it. My main influences are Jimmy Chamberlin who was with Smashing Pumpkins. Other than that I'd have to say Anton Fig, Brain Mantia and Tim Alexander. Again, thanks a lot for watching.
i read some of the comments about needing a drum teacher, and i think that's great; but i feel compelled to at least mention one name- jojo mayer. you won't find anyone with more skill than that guy and he is completely self taught.
Don't try to level of not having a drum teacher. Jojo Mayer is a natural talent who has been playing since 1.5 years old and has also taken lessons (admittedly) in his DVD. Having an instructor and also getting a music education is PRICELESS PERIOD. You can hear this guy is self taught, his dynamic range is lacking, along with musicality. Somewhat competent rudimentary and independence-wise, but lacking in some areas too.
actually "iamcraiger"..........your wrong........i guarantee you that most of the rock drummers and other drummers couldnt read music.........they didnt even wirte their songs.......they memorized them a lot of times right before the recorded it in studio
I agree. This guy is NOT a BAD drummer, but he seems hell bent on, as you say, cramming everything together. Try listening to SImon Phillips, or Carmine Appice. They make every single note stand on it own. This guys drumming needs to "take a breath" every now and then.
@11111phil11111 hey your drumming great ive been playing for about 4 months now i was thinking of getting teacher just to teach me music theory what do you think? and also how long have you been playing for?
Thanks a lot. I've been playing for about 5 years now. I never bothered with lessons or anything like that. I can't read music either. I just play by ear. It may be for some people but it just isn't for me. So although I personally wouldn't bother, it's up to you. Good luck with it and thanks again.
Never took a lesson in my life. Waste of money. I just sat there and hit things until it sounded good. Didn't even have drums for the first few years. Just hit cans with bamboo canes
No they wouldn't. You just pay some 40 something guy a lot of money to tell you how to hold a drumstick properly. If you can't hold a drumstick, drums aren't for you. Plus, there's always the scenario...who taught the first drummer teacher how to play?
As true as that may be, maybe he just wants to have fun jammin' on the drums. I personally don't like being told what to do and most of the progress I've made has been from me trying out shit on my own, not from what other people are saying is the "proper way". In fact I know a guy who takes lessons. He sucks. I don't and I'm WAY better. Not bragging just stating.
And on top of that, when taking lessons, the drummer starts to take on the teacher's style. You lose a bit of individuality as a drummer and lose authentic character in your music. You only have imitated character.
Hey, Im certainly not telling this dude what to do, but I can certainly say anyones playing would improve with guidance from a good teacher.... ill say it again - a "good" teacher, even better - a "good" 40year old teacher... its a no-brainer - you'll get nowhere if you cant read music!
@iamcraiger well some ppl just find it fun to play! reading music is not needed! the drummer for incubus cant read music! he tought himself everything and look at him now!
@flashvideomasta the proper way can be alot more difficult, that's why someone doing it the right way could be considered better than someone with a sloppy technique
sorry let me restate that: it was great but in my opinion there was too much snare. maybe you could incorporate more toms. i thought that the part at 2:35 with the additional snare thing was awesome tho
you play very good i really dont undertand the man that say you about the story oO but very nice skils what you have down the ride ? its another snare ?
where is the GROOVE..where is the down beat...advice, Try to tell a story...a be more dynamic...its not the skill cause you can play..but musiclywise..in doesnt make anysence....
@maigera hahah there is no point in telling this stupid talentless motherfucker called phil anything, that bitch will never be any good if he doesnt take any advice
Very nice work ! You've got some creative ideas there and really good chops to pull it all off. Bravo! I enjoyed watching this clip. I have a few on here as well (old jazz style) - worth a watch.
For some reason my replys never get posted right, so to reply to woody1445, lets see you play better, and faster. Dont give me any of that "hardcore, deathcore, some kind of core" metal bullshit. This guy can play more than blast beats.
I agree w/ your comment it would be more credible if I knew you could spell..."repatition". And don't try to say it was a mistake because the 'e' and 'a' aren't even next to one another...lol. JK!
What does it sound like with a coated head on? I think with the clear head you have it just isn't projecting well; sounds kinda flat.
Awesome playing though man, I've seen a ton of your videos and I'm a fan of Cedar Falls. Can't wait til you guys make it to the big time. I'm gonna be watching you on David Letterman one of these days lol
haha thank you! Thanks a lot! As for the snare, I've tried 4 different heads with it. Some coated, some not. I mean it's probably the perfect snare for someone else but for me I like snares that ring a lot. This seems to be a pretty flat snare in general whatever the tuning or heads you're using. Thanks again.
Ok, thanks for the advice on the snare. I'll make sure I check one out in person before I decide to buy it; as they do cost quite a pretty penny for someone with no money like me haha :P
And no problem, looking forward to more awesome vids and the album.
I don't use a double bass pedal these days. This is just a single pedal. I don't understand the second part. Sounds like you're saying I only have one hand haha. Which part do you mean?
I didnt watch in high-quality. what are you going to do about it?

Quit torturing the drums for gawd's sakes.
And quit torturing your neighbors with spasmodic drumming.
You have a natural talent. Get a good teacher. Mellow out. Get some space between the notes.
Learn to hold a beat so some other musicians will want to hook up with you and jam.
It's not all about the rolls, there's got to be some "butter" in there too.
Slow your roll soldier.
Quit spasing out. Ever see the movie Meatballs?
They chanted his name over and over, "Spas, Spas, Spas."

Ever hear of space between the notes?
Or is the objective to cram and crunch as many notes as you can into the shortest amount of time/space?
Not bad but an experienced drum teacher would have to help you to learn to stroke the drums, hold the sticks right and get grounded.

diplomaticlysmart 2 years ago
Thanks a lot. Yeah, I'd just got a new snare when I recorded it so many I just got over excited haha. Thanks again.

This guy can play more than blast beats.
sadisticfreak432 2 years ago 2
haha! Yeah, they love talking about death metal drummers don't they? I never usually reply to them. So boring. Thanks a lot
11111phil11111 2 years ago

too much snare and too much repatition, use more of the kit more of the time

sadisticfreak432 2 years ago
I agree w/ your comment it would be more credible if I knew you could spell..."repatition". And don't try to say it was a mistake because the 'e' and 'a' aren't even next to one another...lol. JK!

I'm beginning to think left handed drumming on a mostly right hand setup... is better than traditional setups :O

Holy cow! Phil's drumming reminds me of Jimmy Chamberlin's in a very positive way. Now my own self-esteem sank really low behind the drum set.
Floskeknosk 2 years ago 3
phil, you remind me of that drummer from Presidents Of The United States Of America

Is that a Chamberlin Signature Snare?
SabakuDude 2 years ago
Yeah. I'm not a big fan of it actually. It's not really the sound I was hoping for.
11111phil11111 2 years ago
What does it sound like with a coated head on? I think with the clear head you have it just isn't projecting well; sounds kinda flat.
Awesome playing though man, I've seen a ton of your videos and I'm a fan of Cedar Falls. Can't wait til you guys make it to the big time. I'm gonna be watching you on David Letterman one of these days lol
SabakuDude 2 years ago
haha thank you!
11111phil11111 2 years ago
Ok, thanks for the advice on the snare. I'll make sure I check one out in person before I decide to buy it; as they do cost quite a pretty penny for someone with no money like me haha :P
And no problem, looking forward to more awesome vids and the album.

do you have a double bass pedal because around 4minutes 20seconds it sounds like it and also how do you hit so fast with only one hand??
GreenMarkers 2 years ago
I don't use a double bass pedal these days. This is just a single pedal. I don't understand the second part. Sounds like you're saying I only have one hand haha. Which part do you mean?
11111phil11111 2 years ago
Ur hands is pure drummer's hand. BEAUTIFUL drum solo. Very fast hands and awesome beats. Keep up dude
