(continued) I went to this concert in Dallas Memorial Auditorium (pre-Reunion Arena days), and sat in the lower balcony, directly behind the stage. They showed this little film on a large projection screen (maybe 20'x30' or so) in the middle of the album that they played in it's entirety. Truly a spectacle to behold. Then, immediately after this film, the police came in a cleared out a full row of pot heads who were passing joints back and forth all during the concert. Amazing experience.
Those of you youngsters who did not get to experience early Jethro Tull concerts, I have to tell you that you missed genius. "A Passion Play" came the year after Thick as a Brick, and was the next album in what seemed to be a spurt of rock operas that Tull did. This little theatrical production came at the end of the first side of the album, and overlapped into the beginning of the second side of the album. Now, the album was one song in different arias.
It was a blast to see this at the '73 show. Anderson's cameo got the audience response one would expect. BTW, I'm pretty sure that's Ian as the Newt....
@TheStephanotis - I caught the Passion Play tour in 73 too (two nights in a row, fist row seating in Baltimore) and it was so incredible, the only thing that I've seen that comes close was The Tubes.
Thanks so much for making this available. I never had the chance ot see it before, though I love Passon Play. Winnie-the-Pooh performed by Monty Python on acid, brilliant.
I used to think 'Thick as a Brick' was the best album ever. Yes, 'A Passion Play' is so much harder to get into (and even criticised by the band themselves), but it will always have a special place somewhere within me. Brilliant stuff. It really does maintain that Ian Anderson is one of the true geniuses in music.
I love it. There's so much imagination ... you don't need drugs to have a fun. All you need is your fantasy :-)

Priceless, utter genius. And the rest of the album is (and I don't use this word lightly) awesome.

As for all their tempting ideas, well Hare didn't care.
The lost spectacles were his own affair.
And after all, Hare did have a spare a-pair.
A-pair.
what a beautiful
