Well if you can gather the sought amount of karma, you'll get more or less useful items.
If you cannot gather the amount Hel is pissed and punishes you by setting strong enemies into the next fight (so you're more tempted to use the valkyries feather to kill your companions)

You need Karma to please Hel.
YOu can gather Karma by overkilling enemies to a maximum of 100 Karma per Enemy.
You need a special amount of Karma every battle to please Hel.
