The Tremeloes recorded Yellow River and decided not to release it. But, they gave their backing tracks back to Jeff Christie, the composer, to use in his own recording. That's the current story circulating as to what happened. If it's true, I think it worked out best for everyone.
Thanks Gibson! For years the who Christy/Tremoloes thing had baffled me since both versions sounded alike. You answered a baffling question for me and I am grateful! Did you know that in 1983 a progressive Bluegrass band covered it? I believe it was Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.
there are three original members on stage but this is not chip on bass you have dave on drums rick fast fingers on lead guitar and the late alan blackley on rhythm guitar r. i. p. what a great band wish i had been alive in the 60s.
Jeff Christie tried to show and give them this song for the first recording, but tremeloes ignored him. So Jeff decided to form his own band and record the song. The result everybody knows, success and fame...for Christie
They didn't exactly ignore Christie since they recorded the song. In fact everything you hear on Christie's (hit) version is the Tremeloes except for the vocals.
That's correct: the band "Christie" didn't even exist when their first single was recorded. Jeff Christie was the only member of the band "Christie" on the original single, singing lead. Mike Blakely (brother of the Tremeloes' Alan Blakely) was enlisted to join Christie on drums after the single was recorded. That guitar solo is unmistakenly Rick West(wood) of The Tremeloes, both here and on the Christie single. The Trems had a number 1 hit in South America with a Spanish version of this song.

I saw the Tremeloes live at the Radio Trausnitz Oldienight in Bavaria, in April 2007 and they were also singing Yellow River.

There's three members on stage; Rick West(guitar), Chip Hawkes(Bass), and the drummer (Dave Munden) are members of the 60s line up

Chip Hawkes wasn't an original member, he only joined in 1966.
