I really can't thank you enough for posting this video! I bought a 95' xj country with 195k on the clock for $150, sweet deal! only problem sounded like the engine was knocking badly, i was thinkng badly bent rod. I chanced onto your video. i had 4 loose bolts on the flex plate. 45 minutes to take off the inspection plate tighten them! i was sure i was going to have to tear into the engine, you saved me sooo much time with your video. I would have never looked there first. Really, thank you!
Use threadlocker and new bolts, bolts won't loosen again. They also need to be torqued criss-cross in 3 stages.
I know, because my torque converter bolts loosened after an engine transplant, and the plate finally cracked almost 2 years after. Loose bolts and vibration are destructive to the flexplate, and the ears!
Glad to hear my experience helped you confirm those sounds were repairable. And congratulations on your "new" XJ jeep, they're fun to keep running.
i have the same symptoms on my xj, what did you wind up doing? fix your self? if so how hard was it? or have a mech do it? if so, what did it wind up costing you? thanks.
I spent $450 over 3 weeks fixed it myself in the garage. the flexplate, reinforcing ring, crank flange bolts,, and torque converter bolts alone came to $150.
It was a long, dirty job and cleaning every part before reassembly made the difference.
The flexplate alone was $90, but the time it took to get at it was extensive. having 4 wheel drive makes the job lengthy
i took it to aamco and they said it was the rear it has bad bearing and somthing pins a what do u think?

@MultiJeepgirl
Loose Flexplate bolts, or bad engine bearings. Would have to hear it.
maybe worn out water pump, or rarer still...worn harmonic balancer
