I am commenting incase this isnt too late (well it is way too late) but I can tell you are a PC noob so Ineed to tell you...DONT GET ALIENWARE!!!! Coz your friend is among sone of the few people who dont have probs with aliencraps. Even if you dont get probs with it they are WAAAYYYY overpriced. Even you dont have to build one for a comp cheaper than alienware, get an hp or something
@LukieBoss221 If you want to tweak, upgrade your system etc. then building your own PC could be a better option. If you just want to unpack a machine and have it work not worrying about what is inside or upgrading then OEM is a better option. Opening the box on an OEM PC tends to void warranty!
custom is better cause its easier to upgrade, you get what you want, and saves you money in the long run cause you arent buying a whole new computer, just parts.
custom build one. thats what im doing(i bought all things so far but 4 are still in the mail, im happy!) the reason i say this is because its cheaper and i got tons of help from various forums from people helping me make sure everything is compatible. anyone can do it. its basically just like putting together Lego's(i'm describing how easy it is to do this)
The price comes from it BEING custom-made and custom-tuned. I say start learning more about what these computers are made up out of and start piecing together your own, pushing your limits on what system you can create. And like what plumberkid802 said, you can always find cases online somewhere if you have to have the boutique look.
Custom. its alot cheaper. you can get the same computer for like 1000 less if you build it. Its not that hard, just plug everything in. the hard part is the BIOS which even isnt that bad
Custom is better for every situation. you will get more power for less money. The only reason why not everyone has a custom is that not everyone knows how to build one. So if you can figure it out, make one yourself.
oh, it's not gonna be "self explanatory." It'll take weeks just to read stuff and decide what parts to get. Let alone build it.
Overall:
Custom if you want to spend less money for a better computer, while sacrificing a lot of time and being dedicated towads it.
AW if you are lazy, have the money, and don't care about running everything on highest settings. (It will do this for some older games, or games that aren't as graphically intensive.

You know you can customize the parts in your alienware.
And each desktop model comes standard with water cooling. just a cool fact.
