The area itself might not be the prettiest area of town, nor the safest. However, would you rather have these people scattered all throughout downtown Vancouver? The police do a great job in keeping things where they are at. They don't have the manpower, nor the facilities to house all the criminals in the area. If they tried, I'm sure many innocent lives would be put at risk because everyone would transplant throughout the city.

@jacosgirl Millions of dollars are spent on policing the area, harm reduction programs, etc. The area attracts addicts from all over Canada and the US, namely because of the open market and the mild weather. It's quite easy to be homeless in Vancouver. Hard to say what the solution is....

alot of the reason theres so many drug addicts nd mental people down there is cuz they closed down a mental instatution and brought patients down there , stoped there medication so they were to fend for themselves. im from ontario, 2 years ago i hitch hiked up to van with 2 guys that at the time i thought were friends. for 2 months we hanged around this area and met soo many of the people. tht area is very well known for what does down there, and if it bothers you that much dont go there.

I lived there for the past year , and 80% of those people on the corner of main and hastings were MY dealers for that time period . they were STILL on that corner , 3 years later . but you know what's great ? This is clearly the first time this guy has been to the Downtown East Side. I live two blocks from where he is standing and would never want to live anywhere else. Here are some of Vancouver's best restaurants, fantastic boutique shopping, organic cafes and coffee shops and great local markets. There are definitely some interesting characters in my neighbourhood but they are part of what make this area so special.

This is a link to a documetary (Through a Blue Lens) that was made by the police in Vancouver about some of the drug users of the downtown east side. It's from the late 90's but it's certainly worth viewing - the police are quite compassionate toward the long term drug users.
Only reason so many drug addicts are in one area is because they go there to be accepted. I would too if I was a drug addict, but nope just stick to psychedelics.

I tell u guys I used to lived on Main and water st.Before they opened the "In-site"Safe Injection site and it was 15-20 times worst then There were thousands of Needles all over the streets ppl overdosing 4-5 daily in the back Alleys Over all it's much better today than it was from 1985-2005.Take it from someone who's been there.

Interesting video. Am reading an engaging book about this area right now. It's called "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" by Gabor Mate, MD. This guy is the physician at a Downtown Eastside Clinic who treats these addicts. Please do check it out if you have genuine curiosity about the lives of these people. Made me think twice before judging, and inspired me to focus my psychology career on those afflicted by addiction. May you all find peace.

The downtown eastside is a wonderful community full of people dedicated to the education, rehabilitation, housing and wellbeing of thousands of men and women from the lower mainland and across canada, most of whom have survived life-long abuse and exploitation. This is an epicentre for cultural exchange, arts and communication- an important community of very under-privileged and under-represented people. I live here and I have had wonderful experiences.

I don't think the unpleasantness of the area is captured too well, but this area of Vancouver really does have one of the highest drug rates and suicide rates in North America. A better video conveying that sort of thing is "Junkie shooting up and telling his story" parts 1 and 2.

This is a link to a documetary (Through a Blue Lens) that was made by the police in Vancouver about some of the drug users of the downtown east side. It's from the late 90's but it's certainly worth viewing - the police are quite compassionate toward the long term drug users.

Ah, Hastings, they lowered the speed limit to 30 kph (20mph) through there to try and reduce the number of zombies getting mowed down as they run into the streets high on crack. It's like this every day there, but the strange thing is, if you go 5 blocks in any direction, you end up in nice neighborhood (and affluent housing) like Gastown, Chinatown, and the downtown core. This place is crazy as fuck. I was at the America backpackers hostel (10$ a night, the cheapest in North America, good deal guys), and we are a couple of blocks from this shit place. I tell u guys I used to lived on Main and water st.Before they opened the "In-site"Safe Injection site and it was 15-20 times worst then There were thousands of Needles all over the streets ppl overdosing 4-5 daily in the back Alleys Over all it's much better today than it was from 1985-2005.Take it from someone who's been there.

Interesting video. Am reading an engaging book about this area right now. It's called "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" by Gabor Mate, MD. This guy is the physician at a Downtown Eastside Clinic who treats these addicts. Please do check it out if you have genuine curiosity about the lives of these people. Made me think twice before judging, and inspired me to focus my psychology career on those afflicted by addiction. May you all find peace.

The downtown eastside is a wonderful community full of people dedicated to the education, rehabilitation, housing and wellbeing of thousands of men and women from the lower mainland and across canada, most of whom have survived life-long abuse and exploitation. This is an epicentre for cultural exchange, arts and communication- an important community of very under-privileged and under-represented people. I live here and I have had wonderful experiences.

I live in victoria, and have clearly been to vancouver many times. It is as bad as its portrayed here, but vancouver has a beautiful side like all city's will have there drug problems but most are more spread out. In Van, majority is on this street. Its a beautiful place. If you've never been there don't judge it becuase of this 1 vid please

I don't think the unpleasantness of the area is captured too well, but this area of Vancouver really does have one of the highest drug rates and suicide rates in North America. A better video conveying that sort of thing is "Junkie shooting up and telling his story" parts 1 and 2.
