As I watched this vid again, I realized his style of playing (w/the right hand) is actually two fingerstyles: 1)Flamenco (the style I referred to in my comment last week) and 2) Tapping-as opposed to traditional tapping on the mid and upper registers of the fretboard, Varma's simply tapping in the same area that most bassists normally strike when using conventional pop&slap style. I think he has good command and execution of these techniques.
All of the styles this guy plays & demonstrates are derivative of the 'flamenco style' of bass playing. Not really 'slap bass' as the obscure voice refers to a cpl times thruout the vid.
Either way, this guy has good chops and is interesting to watch. I walked away ready to try out some of his licks.

Not that being fast is the point. If anything, the point in bass playing is to be groovy. With all respect, his playing is not very clean and sometimes messy. The patterns he's getting out of that technique sound exactly like those Wooten and King play. But with proper bass technique they would sound much cleaner. There are too many unwanted harmonics . Not bad, but there's a lot to improve. Sorry.
what is the first song he is playing its also played aat the end of the vid. seriously someone tell me ive been trying to figure it out for weeks now!!!
It's actually a little similar to a Louis Johnson technique that he called 'spanking'. I wonder how many of the uber bassists actually sought the "worlds fastest" record. I feel that if Victor Wooten or Bill Dickens actually sought such a thing they would school Mr Varma on speed. I think his original approach to his right hand technique is far more novel than his "speed"
@iConverseMyLife It's more of a matter of personal taste, kind of like why some guitarists are fingerstyle guitarists instead of pick guitarists. Geddy Lee uses the same strumming style to play 16th notes on his bass. It might be that holding his hand open over the strings feels more natural than the 'thumb-index finger' slap technique.
@iConverseMyLife I don't know if you've ever seen someone play Tabla, but they're a kind of drum, played (usually) with almost the exact same right hand technique that this guy uses to slap. If that helps.
it's more like tapping in a way, I use the same technique at time.......look at Ryan Martinie from the Alternative Metal group, Mudvayne....he uses the same technique
@iConverseMyLife hes not using his thumb i used to do it using my whole hand i mean i literally slapped the thing until i started watching flea a little more
@iConverseMyLife it's the same concept as playing a tabla.... index finger is sort of like one drumstick, the middle and ring finger are like another drumstick, and you rotate your hand to bring each one up and down
@iConverseMyLife : In Indian music instrument, there is TABLA which is played by tapping fingers of both hands to create melodious musics, it is same technique used here on Bass guitar. That is why it is known as 'Indian slap bass'
