I've got 2 amazing greyhounds at home, 3 cats and 8 horses and all animals get along perfectly fine.
It's never any problems inside the house and it's never been any problems outdoors either, but of course I always check that there're no cats or rabbits running around before I let them run loose.. but that's what you should do with all dogs, especially hunting dogs!
The dogs and cats play and cuddle together, and my greyhounds never had any problems with small dogs :)
It's not that Greyhounds go after cats or smaller dogs because they like to scare or want to hurt them. They're sight hounds and will chase almost anything that runs on pure instinct alone. It's what they were bred to do. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, and many Greyhounds can live and get along very well with smaller house pets :)
awh my the dog we got in my house conker all he would just run away from him lol his brother slug city would just think what the hell is it ? with the oddest look on his face
Sorry but it's the same as any other dog... Some are bad with cats, some are good with cats. It's all about how you introduce them. Chuck them in a room together on first day, expect cats chased all through life. Gradually introduce them, they're fine.
It's an old falicy that dogs chase cats. My dog loves my cats and I'm sure my grey, when I get it, will be the same
My greyhound is afraid of cats. If one looks at him, he avoids eye contact. If one rubs against him, he freezes and acts like they aren't there! He is great with little dogs, though, loves to play with any toy breed and is very gentle with them.
Any dog with a chase drive (which is not always breed specific) can chase cats. You just need to learn how to manage it. My 3 year old boxer/lab just obsesses over cats and we had to resort to a vibration collar to break his stare when he goes into that chase mode. Works well. But if you can find another method to work well, then only use a training collar like that as a last resort like we did. We have a 17 year old cat that just can't handle being chased like that.
My greyhound can be a jerk when it comes to my cat. My greyhound doesn't mind the cat and it took a while for my cat to get used to the greyhound but when my cat tries to lick my greyhound, the greyhound growls and warns the cat not to! I think it might be because my cats tongue is tough or she just doesn't like his presence.
We have a 10 year old greyhound called Emma and she gets on well with our 18 year old cat called Ginger. They seem to look out for one another. Our Emma gets a blanket put over her at bedtime too.
good for you!! they are so loving and appreciative of everything you do for them. mine all get blankets put over them at bedtime and they sleep like babies!! we have three wonderful greys, a beagle/lab mix, and a black cat too!! search "chloe pet me" to see me and my grey chloe at christmas, she's an attention hound all right!
We were at an awareness show yesterday for Hall Green Retired Greyhound Trust, so many people were saying 'we'd love a Greyhound but we have a cat', I wish we'd had this video! x
I wish my Greys were good with cats. Not that I want a cat or particularly like them (they scare the bejaysus out of me) but I'd love not to be dragged down the road whenever we see one. x
I've had two retired racing greys and two kitties for years and they get along great!! Some greys do have a higher prey drive, and are thus not safe around small dogs or cats. It's easy to "test" for if you know what you are doing, but do NOT attempt if you don't know what you are doing for the sake of your pets. Always muzzle your grey until you know absolutely for sure how they react to small animals. My one grey and my kitties groom each other and curl up together in bed. Very sweet!!
I am watching a greyhound for a few months right now... He really likes to chase cats. luckily hes on a leash. Are they safe around small dogs??? anyone?
I can say that my dogs are not psyched by little dogs. They kind of look at them like what are you and what do you want. No aggression, but no love either.
lol... watch a chiuaua walk down from the sidewalk, and break its legs... say "pica-boo!" and you'll probably give it a heart attack. they greyhound probably licked the chiuaua's face and the head fell off or something. Greyhounds are calm and nice dogs usually. At least to other dogs, unless they have experienced something frightning earlier in their lives.
@organpipes Ahh, Myne is fine, She will bark if they annoy her, So see what your dogs like around them, Oh and my greyhound chased a cat once, She picked the cat up in her mouth, in the end, the cat was fine, but she had a bleeding foot and cut off one of her toes, so don't be psyched if your dog bleeds. :)
@organpipes just like cats, some greys are good with small dogs and others aren't. I know some greys who love small dogs and love to be around them, and some who have too high a prey drive to be around them.
@organpipes We got our grey Ginger four years ago, and have never had a problem with her and animals...she loves them all. We have a cat and they sleep together and play together. Her bestfriend is a little shitzu named Muffin. I have pics of her with a rabbit and she was amazed by it and couldn't stop sniffing it. I also trained her not to chase squirrels and always walk her off leash...which seems to really amaze other greyhound owners that I have met.
People are often amazed when I tell them our 2 cats happily share their home with our lovely greyhound Daisy. Thanks for showing just how good they can be together!
That is so adorable! The cat is beautiful, and the dog is so sweet. Gorgeous animals you have there. I wish my Greyhound mix, Shadow, was that nice to my three cats! Although she's still a puppy so she only chases them to play... they just don't like it very much. =/

Cute! A cat wouldn't last 2 seconds with my greys. It really just depends on the dog though.

That reminds me of my grey and her kitties. They adored each other, and would often bathe each other.

I had a dark brindle and she absolutely love my cats, and they loved her. They did a lot of mutual grooming.

I have a cat who does the same thing to my IG. He doesn't mind until she starts digging her claws in his back.
