In the Netherlands, it is required by law to open your car door with your right hand, so that it forces you to turn around and look behind. Maybe we should do the same.
Bike illegally squeezes by the car by passing on the right, no sir. Cyclist in the wrong. I feel bad for the guy, but that happens. When on the road you are a vehicle, even as a cyclist.
@irvthegr8 You obviously aren't from the city. He was obeying all laws, the cops didn't. It's the law to look and see if it's clear for you to open a driver's side door, dummy.
@epohnopulse ok smart ass explain this to me ..if you noticed, the vehicles stopped including the cab right before the officer opened his door ..why didnt the bicycle stop?
@irvthegr8 Because you're not from the city, it's something you don't understand. It's called filtering, and is perfectly legal. What cop is ignorant to the idea that people ride bikes in the city? It's VERY common.
I bike in NYC and have some good footage on my channel as well. My footage has been cited in the gothamist and nytimes. You need a helmet cam and you need to record sound too. Having the conversation that ensued afterwards would have been the best.
Oh boy, it's too bad that cops won't say sorry, but I gotta say that if you ride like that it's only a matter of time before you eat a door. Personally, I'd be more scared of getting doored by the passenger getting out of a cab. That could have happened just as easily. Good luck healing up. Glad you didn't break a bone.
i dont understand the faded marking on hte pavement....i see a bike lane icon implying there is one but it looks like it means it's a shared lane, bikes and cars....but regardless cop van should not be parked there and should not be exiting driver's side without properly looking out with caution.....
@TrippinInaBox Bike lane icons aren't put across white lines, they are in the middle of the lane. That looks like graffiti, because it would be saying the line is a lane. I'd like to see more of the ride instead of the 10 seconds to see how he was riding before this happened, because it seems like very careless riding to me, going too fast riding the line.
@CapnBludd he's really not going that fast. if you look at videos of messengers riding through traffic you'll see that this guy was just at a normal pace.
And he got $9million in a settlement using the tax payers money. Thanks liberals!

Ouch!!! Just read the back story on Road.cc sounds like NYC Cops have a certain "fondness" shall we say, for cyclists. :-(

@BrynTheSkit legalities aside, this falls into common sense bucket. You can clearly see he is gunning for it between cars.

@AlekseyVKorzun it's obvious that the biker slowed down as he squeezed between the taxi and the front van

Cops are dicks but you were riding between cars like a super man. Both at fault.
