I managed to get the first 3 puzzles and quite quickly too! The 4th puzzle I saw the first move but not all the variations from there, and the 5th puzzle again I guessed at the first move but didn't see all variations.
puzzle #1: 23 sec. i saw only the basics and i didn't calculate too much.
puzzle #2: 2 min and 1 sec. but first i looked at PxQ and then came back at the original position.
puzzle #3: i was a bit worried about the time and when i was looking at all variations i just picked 1 and in 48 sec. i missed the move,i learned that from now on i need to think more.
puzzle #4: 11 sec.not kidding! didn't see all variations.
I got 1, 2, and 4 correct. I chose the correct move on 3 by instinct, but did not see the follow-up moves. On 5, I just punted for some reason. (My USCF rating used to be a little south of 1500, but I have not played regularly recently).
1st one I didn't get but that was just practice round. Second I got. Third I thought Rf6! with the idea of Kxh5 and Rh6 mate. Fourth I saw Qa8, but certainly not the whole variation. Fifth one I just forgot to press pause.
I've noticed that I tend to be looking for the wrong things in these puzzles. Sometimes the puzzle is about capturing, othertimes about preventing pawns from advancing, sometimes you can just forget both instead focusing on mating. Any tips on narrowing down quickly what I should be looking for?
Horrible -- I only got 4, but without half of the variations. I'm very inflexible in my thinking: a result of a nasty combination of too little concentration and dedication, too little experience with puzzles and thorough position analysis, too much blitz, a meagre gift for chess to start with, haha!
But it was a great eye-opener. And a pleasure to test myself. Thank you, Jerry!
I didn't see all the variations in puzzle 4, I did see the fork at the end though. the 5th puzzle was good! I took some time on that one! I saw Rh4 but I couldn't get the follow up so I didn't give myself credit for it lol. Good variations! I was thinking along the lines of 1.Qe6+ Rf5 2. Rf7 but then it's pretty easily met by ... Qe3+ and I couldn't get a follow up =[
Thanks for posting though Jerry! Awesome vids as always!
I think there is another winning solution to puzzle #3 1.Kxh5, c3, 2.Rf6 (with the threat of Rh6 mate, so the black rook must move to make way for the king or lose the exchange in which case white would win) Re8 3.Rh6+, Kg8 4.Rh8+, Kf7 5.Rxe7, ( doesn't matter what white does 5.....Kxe8 6.g8=Q+, or 5....c2 6.Rc8)
Not as fast or strong as the solution but after I saw a winning continuation I didn't keep looking.
Looks like my end game needs improving...got the 3rd, 4th and 5th right, but I didnt get all the variations...I totally missed some of blacks moves...great puzzles though thanks for posting them Jerry...Looking forward to your next video
@gorskitim I wonderd the same. The awnser by chessnetwork is ok, but Kh8 instead of Kf7 is also possible, but after Kh8 you have a knight fork and king and queen.
4/5, the last 2 just jumped into my eyes. I love sacrificial tactics and it has helped a time or 2 against players at one time 900 points higher than me :D.
#2 made me think for a good minute and a half, #4 took less than a second, and the rest were somewhere in between and very nicely done. 5/5 correct and 5/5 for the quality of the video. Keep up the good work!
Puzzle 4 I rejected 1. Qa8 Rxa8 2. c8Q because of 2 .. Qb8.
This is also bad of course because of Qe6+ [wich threatens mate or facilitates a fork on king+queen] but to be complete I would include that nice variation as well..
But to be fair: I didn't get all the possible variations of the forth one, because it's very complex. Just saw it was a strong threat.
If it was a real game I would only play it as a "hope-move", because taking a chance is still better than going into a losing end-game with certainty. :p
I totally screwed up the first one, but got the first couple of moves for the last four puzzles. For some reason, though, I didn't see all the way into the variations (for example, on number 5, I missed the Q block on h5 after Qh7+).
W00t got 4! I didn't get the first cause my brother was watching the video and I saw his screen when he was looking at the solution so in essence i didn't even get to try :/
I think I have found an alternative winning line for puzzle 2. I calculated 1.Kg5! c3 2.Kf6!! c2 3.Ng5+ Kh6 4.Rxg8!! and Rh8#. My chess engine suggests 1...Rxg7 which is an obvious win for white after 2.Nxg7 Kxg7 3.Rc8 stopping both pawns. What do you think? Can I get full credit for this? :D
puzzle 3 i thought : 1. Kxh5, c3 , 2. Rf6 threathening mate in one forcing either Rxg7 or Ra8 (b8 c8 etc) and if Ra8 its followed by Rh6+ and Rh8+ grabbing the rook and the game am i wrong?
4 out of 5.. although I missed some of the alternatives black had in puzzles 4 and 5. An alternative you missed in puzzle 4 after Qc8 black could interpose with Qd8 and the back rank seems all shored up.. but then Qxe6 and its lights out.
Got puzzle 1. Puzzle 2 I went for Qf2 (mate threat on f8) followed by Bh6. Not sure why I didn't even consider the immediate Bh6. Puzzle 3 took forever, but I got that one. Puzzle 4, I certainly didn't calculate all those variations, so although I came up with Qa8, I don't count that as solved. And I got puzzle 5. So 3/5 here. Thanks for the video, Jerry! I don't put enough time into my endgame studies.
damit 4/5 the 4th one is a huge jump in terms of # of variations to be calculated. but i like how it's realli practical teaching the rook-pawn-knight tactics
i got the 3rd one and partially saw the 5th. but after i watched the whole video, i took the test again and got them all right! :) all of your videos are great!
Nevermind on my last comment, I see what happens. After 2.c8=Q Qd8 3. Qxe6+ and black can't avoid mate. After 3... Kh8 4. Ng6#, and after 3...Kf8 4. Qf7#

(I solved this puzzle without actually seeing the variations with 2...Nf8).

think I found a better continuation on nr4
at 3:29 instead of Rxf8 I went with
Ng6, if Kh7, then Nxf8 check, Kg8 , Nd4 check, winning the queen.
if queen moves, then Rxf8 Kh7, h5 Queenmove, Rh8 mate
I hope I did not miss anything, but I think this is a more accrate continuation, becase you don't let black deend with the pawnmove.

@DarkInception1 after Qd8 white can take the hanging pawn on e6, and after Qxe6+ it's mate in 1 so black is forced to take the queen in that position
