Good video, I have it and just recently figured it out...so its really good to know theres a name for it other than "shyness", cuz when someone says you're shy it makes you feel like you can help it, but you actually can't and it gets really frustrating. I have a video about it too on my channel!
Anyone with sm please email me. I am doing a huge project on sm and would love to hear all your stories and try to give you inspiration because I am a recovered selectively mute kid.
OMG. This is the story of my life. I feel all of the same things all the time. It's really hard for me but I've been coming along. You hang in there. You aren't alone! (:
Sounds like my 7yr old daughter. She has been extremely shy everywhere but her own home forever..People believe she is being rude but she just feels awkward around people...
im 13 and i also just realized that i have selective mutism also. its hard for me to speak to someone in class or just generally. I also hate it when i get the question:Why are you so quiet? they make me feel like some kinda freak just cause i dont talk . but neways i just wanted ta give my 2 cents. bye.
But since I had a lot of problems the past 5 years with no explanation, my mom said: Ok, if you think you got ADD, you should go to the doctor. Long story short: I was right, I got diagnosed with ADD. The family felt bad they didn't believed me. But back to why I typed this story: this video is very recognizable. And now I'm scared how they would react if I tell them.. Cause I'm sure it's not only ADD..
Yesterday was the first time I heard about this 'disorder' (I don't like that word). Your video is very recognizable! Last year I was absolutely sure I had ADD; took all the tests on the internet I could find and they all confirmed it. At that moment it was like: FINALLY! See, I'm not insane/crazy/weird/.. There is an explanation for my behavior. In my enthusiasm I told my mom and the rest of the family. They didn't believed it and didn't take it seriously..
I love this video. It is deep, passionate, honest, and heartfelt. I feel like I can relate to you a lot. I'm not currently diagnosed with selective mutism, either, but I really feel connected to people with it.
Thanks for all the comments. I wish you all the best of luck in getting through SM. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or even a person with selective mutism, please try to get help for your child, student, or yourself. I am getting better myself, but I still have a long way to go.
suffer from selective mutism i dont talk to anyone ever. ive not spoken a word to anyone in 3 years im 13 now and im fustrated. i really want to speak, im desperate. but its just too hard i talk to people online, but thats the only way i communicate with friends.
i hope u can let someone knw what you're dealing with. i'm the mother of a15 yr old with sm. she has always been known as "the girl who doesn't talk" we've tried therapy, hypnosis and meds & she still struggles. depression&anxiety almst always go with sm& if you're in school, get a 504plan that outlines how your teachrs need to handle your disorder-most of them are not informed. read as much as u can about it-knowledge is power & never feel like there is something wrong with you. i wish you luck
i can feel ur pain bcuz i think i have it to once i researched the disorder i just saw that i have all those symptoms plus i was always soooo quiet wen i was little like in kindergardeni never talk to my teachers or students in class. dis is very difficult and its soo hard to deal with im still scared and have anxiety to talk to people and other kids my age in my class i only talk alot in my home with family and a few selected friends who i am comftorble talken too
I have a 11 year old daughter with that condition. she was diagnose when she was in first grade. it is frustrating for her and me that she wont speak in public location specially in school. she has been SED since then and there is no sign of her changing. I dont want her to suffer. what can i do to help?
I've had sm since I was in kindergarten and am now 20 and in college.. it sucks that I am STILL quiet and still have a very difficult time socializing with anyone, though I also have a hard time trusting people and am always thinking that they think that I am weird because I'm not like everyone else in school.
This seems like something really hard to go through. While I can see traits of APD, it also seems like you may have a (mild) case of Agoraphobia (fear and avoidance of large crowds), but Selective Mutism seems to cover it all.
I agree with ktthrower, that if you were to muster up enough courage to talk to anyone, it would be your mom. You need someone to pull you out of this.
Of course, if you'd rather talk to someone more faceless, send me a PM. I'm a fairly nice guy.
Hey I know exactly how you feel, I has SM when I was younger. What is helping me is reading up on the condition as much as possible - the symptoms, causes and how it can be treated. Look up stuff on the internet or order books online. Tell your mom or an understanding teacher. It will get easier - I promise you.
I loved your video and I feel your pain. My daughters ages 5 & 7 have this. My 7 year old doesn't speak at all not to the teacher or her classmated. She will not even talk to me at school. Both of them are seeing a therpist but haven't had any improvements yet. If it gets too bad I may homeschool them.
No one will think you're crazy, if you bring up some websites with legit info, you can help to educate your parents on the matter. There's even a song by Paul McCartney about selective mutism =)
I'm also a 15 year old girl with selective mutism. There are things you can do to help it. My mom took me to the doctor a few years ago and I was diagnosed with Selective Mutism, my doctor put me on Fluoxetine and I think it does help somewhat. You should tell someone and get the help you need. I know how it can be, people talk to me like I'm stupid all the time. You should tell your mom whats going on, 'm sure your family would be happy to help you.
You have got to tell your mom or at least write her a letter explaining what is going on. You cannot do this alone. I can't believe your teachers have not become involved. My daughter is four and was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. I have been reading a lot of info on this and you need to get help. How old are you? This breaks my heart.
tell yourself not to do prep-thinking BUT go straight to talking LOUDLY and LAUGH.... to give yourself that needed extra dose of oxygen and space to boost confidence ,,, then resume talking normal loud, pretending you re very confident and relax. works for stuttering children too
Excellent video. You are in good company so don't despair.

I have selective mutism. It sucks. And its worse when people put pressure on you to talk. I'm 13 years old, had it since I was three.

You definitely, 100% sure, have selective mutism. 95% sure you have social phobia. 75% sure you have AvPD. They all go together!
Good luck. Great movie. I hope you get the courage to let your mom know what's going on.
I also feel like this song could be about selective mutism.
