She was killed by a large container ship that ran into her and broke her vertebrae. Blue whales often linger at the surface to rest during a breathing cycle and by the time they hear a huge ship coming, they may not have time to move their large bodies out of the way. It's very sad, especially because blue whales are endangered and the loss of a single animal is bad for the future of the population.

Due to noise pollution from an increased number of ships in the area, a whale may not always realize just how close the ships are. When you're dealing with a boat the size of a container ship, a large whale like a blue whale cannot necessarily move its massive body to get out of the way in time, especially if its resting at the surface. There were at least 3 (known) ship strikes on whales that summer.

It didn't run into a ship...the ship ran into it. Most likely, while the whale was resting at the surface and taking some breaths. By the time the whale saw or heard the ship, it was likely to late to move its enormous body out of the way. Since blue whales are an endangered species, the death of any single animal potentially has an impact on the future of the species. They are facing many challenges as a result human impact to their environment.
