SUBLIME! wonderful dynamic and Tempo! only possible for Artists like Abbado and Araiza. What a D-flatt!! like trumpet but with body resonance and the final piano phrase!!! after over 30 Years there has been no better interpretation than this one! BRAVI!
this is very very good, sung with conviction and finesse, plenty of volume, the mind is with every note! that comes across, my personal favourite has always been Björling, but times, accoustics, tech etc is different, so this comes definitely next - Pavarotti was not so good, maybe the recordings here on tube are early.
here is Björling for comparison- different times in history of course watch?v=bIV5bBYgH04
BRAVO!!! UNIQUE! ... one of the very few Tenors (Aragall and Kraus are other examples) able to modulate not only his volume as the Belcanto dictates (Ref. Messa di Voce) but also his vibrato (in frequency and in combination with volume!!!) giving his renditions a special beauty and expressiveness otherwise not achieved. He resembles a great painter with an own painting technique.
Let's put an end to this useless controversy between Francisco Araiza and Juan Diego Florez. They are both great; each one has a different version of cuius animam.
One has the version with balls, the other without. But they are both great; the rest is a matter of personal taste.
I admire him immensely for singing at the tempo he does, which taxes his breath control to the fullest extent and yet he came through it with FLYING COLOURS! His use of dynamics was also beautiful and a perfect top D! Bravo Araiza! It is very apparent that the Spanish-speaking countries have a claim to the exclusivity of the best tenors at the moment!
Araiza is stunning in this piece. Such a unique, fat, ringy color. I've always loved his voice: simultaneously fat, flexible, and, as others have said, he has a pleasant richness and color throughout his entire range. Plus, he's damned loud!
Plus, this piece is a füç&ing bitch. Plenty of time spent at and above the passaggio, and nearly as much far below "the cash register". Then you've gotta do those gruesomely slow rising chromatic scales starting around 4:36. Followed by a freaking D-flat.
Contristatam, of course. That's the original version ascribed to Jacopone da Todi. Moreover, the present participle ( the soul making sad whom or what?) does not make much sense, IMHO
This is one of my favorite interpretations on YouTube. The tempo is perfect unlike a lot of other versions where the tempo is considerably faster. This is Majestic as Rossini intended it and Araiza is perfect for this piece!
Now I understand what Pavarotti was talking about when he ones said that Araiza may be the most gifted among the tenors in their time... (Pav/Domingo/Carreras/Bonisolli etc.).
@bloydaage it still takes more than a gift to be great. you need to add solid technique or you will still not reach your potential or decline early. araiza's voice has lost focus over the years from singing roles and music too heavy for his voice imo. he struggles more to be heard and to sing the high notes he used to when singing repertoir more suited to his voice. still a great singer just doesn't sound nearly as good as he could if he was more careful and hadn't lost the bite in his sound.
@Pawelp Actually Araiza began as a bass-baritone! Read Hines' book. He became the premiere Mozart/Rossini in the world but later tried spinto. I think he also did Lohengrin. In the theater his voice had color and size - something missing from Florez in a similar fach. A very great singer indeed.
@Agorante Wow, pardon my ignorance... but I still wonder if he made the mistake of not having the right stamina singing so "big". In other words, if spinto repertoire was sustainable. Sometimes great voices can indeed cover wide ranges and pass for a bunch of fachs and other stuff... but not all are safe for their actual voice.
@Agorante Indeed that seems to be what happened. It's amazing what some people can do with their voice. Some can, beyond a mere imitation of another fach even pass for it. But sustaining the tessitura, role after role, year after year...is a whole other ball game.
--->joy4being ....are you deaf? do you have any idea what you are talking about? it seems you don`t.
