  • Que maravilla!!!!, extraordinario Francisco Araiza!!!!, BRAVOOO!!!!

  • SUBLIME! wonderful dynamic and Tempo! only possible for Artists like Abbado and Araiza. What a D-flatt!! like trumpet but with body resonance and the final piano phrase!!! after over 30 Years there has been no better interpretation than this one! BRAVI!

  • this is very very good, sung with conviction and finesse, plenty of volume, the mind is with every note! that comes across, my personal favourite has always been Björling, but times, accoustics, tech etc is different, so this comes definitely next - Pavarotti was not so good, maybe the recordings here on tube are early.

here is Björling for comparison- different times in history of course watch?v=bIV5bBYgH04

  • BRAVO!!! UNIQUE! ... one of the very few Tenors (Aragall and Kraus are other examples) able to modulate not only his volume as the Belcanto dictates (Ref. Messa di Voce) but also his vibrato (in frequency and in combination with volume!!!) giving his renditions a special beauty and expressiveness otherwise not achieved. He resembles a great painter with an own painting technique.

  • Thin voice my old lady's corset cover, you wanna hear thin voice? Go listen to Andrea Bocelli

  • Let's put an end to this useless controversy between Francisco Araiza and Juan Diego Florez. They are both great; each one has a different version of cuius animam.

One has the version with balls, the other without. But they are both great; the rest is a matter of personal taste.

  • I admire him immensely for singing at the tempo he does, which taxes his breath control to the fullest extent and yet he came through it with FLYING COLOURS! His use of dynamics was also beautiful and a perfect top D! Bravo Araiza! It is very apparent that the Spanish-speaking countries have a claim to the exclusivity of the best tenors at the moment!

  • Absolutamente espectacular!!

  • Bravó Francisco Araiza!

  • Thought at beginning...this tempo is suicidal!

  • LOVE the sideburns!

  • Molto bravo. Complimenti di vero cuore.

  • Who is the scary guy at 0:45..? Is it supposed to be Rossini..? Wierd look. Arazia sounds damn great...! Cool sideburns..

  • voce possente , tono gradevole, in sintesi molto bravo...........

  • wow!

  • ¡Bravísimo Francisco!

  • Jodé Pancho! La bordaste!

  • Brawo, sehr gut gesungen!!!

  • This is the best rendition of this aria, excelent tempo, phrasing and amazing top and finale.

  • Araiza is stunning in this piece. Such a unique, fat, ringy color. I've always loved his voice: simultaneously fat, flexible, and, as others have said, he has a pleasant richness and color throughout his entire range. Plus, he's damned loud!

Plus, this piece is a füç&ing bitch. Plenty of time spent at and above the passaggio, and nearly as much far below "the cash register". Then you've gotta do those gruesomely slow rising chromatic scales starting around 4:36. Followed by a freaking D-flat.

  • Lyric:

    Cuius animam gementem,

    Contristatam et dolentem

    Pertransivit gladius.

Hi, which variation rings more authentic to you, "contristantem" (the present participle" or "contristatam" (the past participle)?

  • Contristatam, of course. That's the original version ascribed to Jacopone da Todi. Moreover, the present participle ( the soul making sad whom or what?) does not make much sense, IMHO

  • Not a very humble opinion though.

  • This is one of my favorite interpretations on YouTube. The tempo is perfect unlike a lot of other versions where the tempo is considerably faster. This is Majestic as Rossini intended it and Araiza is perfect for this piece!

  • Now I understand what Pavarotti was talking about when he ones said that Araiza may be the most gifted among the tenors in their time... (Pav/Domingo/Carreras/Bonisolli etc.).

  • @bloydaage it still takes more than a gift to be great. you need to add solid technique or you will still not reach your potential or decline early. araiza's voice has lost focus over the years from singing roles and music too heavy for his voice imo. he struggles more to be heard and to sing the high notes he used to when singing repertoir more suited to his voice. still a great singer just doesn't sound nearly as good as he could if he was more careful and hadn't lost the bite in his sound.

  • @bigus That dark hue in his timbre and ability to put in more weight misled him I think, he still was a leggiero/lirico...

  • @Pawelp Actually Araiza began as a bass-baritone! Read Hines' book. He became the premiere Mozart/Rossini in the world but later tried spinto. I think he also did Lohengrin. In the theater his voice had color and size - something missing from Florez in a similar fach. A very great singer indeed.

  • @Agorante Wow, pardon my ignorance... but I still wonder if he made the mistake of not having the right stamina singing so "big". In other words, if spinto repertoire was sustainable. Sometimes great voices can indeed cover wide ranges and pass for a bunch of fachs and other stuff... but not all are safe for their actual voice.

  • @Pawelp You could be right. He did indeed lose some quality when he moved up into heavier roles.

  • @Agorante Indeed that seems to be what happened. It's amazing what some people can do with their voice. Some can, beyond a mere imitation of another fach even pass for it. But sustaining the tessitura, role after role, year after year...is a whole other ball game.

In any case, I love Araiza... stupendous voice.

  • @bloydaage actually, in that interview he said Aragall was probably the best. You should look him up

  • pala mieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeercoless! que tal powerrrrrrrrrrrrr!! bravo PANCHO ARAIZA!! BRAVISISMO

  • Atencion: esto es una afirmacion!!!

!!! esta es la mejor version !!!

  • This is class!

  • Definetely NO thin voice - are You serious???

There are very few tenor voices with such richness in sound! And even fewer in the Rossini repertoire!BRAVO MAESTRO ARAIZA!

  • @stern1959 Thick, if anything!

  • --->joy4being ....are you deaf? do you have any idea what you are talking about? it seems you don`t. It is better not to make any comment than such an unquialified one!!! please learn a little bit more about music and voice before writing such a worthless comment again!! this is one of the best interpretations existing at all

  • To joy4being-You must be hearing impaired!

  • Gorgeous! Unbelievable! Bravo Maestro Araiza! (I love his sideburns!!!)

  • Wonderfull, Araiza!!

This film is from "Rossini in Bersalle" and all the male singers had those terribly long sideburns.

  • Hummm!!

  • is that Rossini there??? lol, spooky!!

  • It is probably someone dressed up like Rossini, but no I do believe Rossini died a long time ago. Perhaps a few hundred years ago. Just to let you know.

  • Of course I know Rossini died, if you see him, walk away!! lol!

  • This is GREAT ! But I would like to see Robert Gambill singing this!

  • I absolutely love this song, tis very awesome and not at all too slow, as many people have been complaining about in this. Thank you very much for posting it and if you have any more please post them.

  • Then please post it. I can wait to enjoy it.

  • wonderful voice

    terribel hair

  • Hi Spinple, this was in 1980, when you wasn't yet born! The hair-styling was so at that time. ;-)

  • ...........so,you mean in 1980 this kind of hairdo was popular?!

  • I think you aren´t right....This concert was a bit stylish.I can remember 80s - nobody was wearing gloves at that time...And that haircut can remain late 60s...Did you notice the sitting man in the audience? It should be some kind of performance or psychiatric clinic...nothing more! :-D

  • You do realize (I hope!) that the sitting man is supposed to be Rossini!!

  • What a wonderful performance.

I had the chance to hear him singing in Mexico City's impressive Opera House many years ago ( mid 80's ) and he brought the house down with his portentous voice. One of the most memorable opera performances of all times there and many other places I've been throughout my life.

Thanks to youtube, now we can enjoy such a wonderful voice. Thank you maestro Araiza for the memories.

  • A Great Performance from the Maestro Araiza, but the Orchestra its with too much sound, this is not the best director!!

  • What a huge voice. Brilliant. I hope I can sing like this in years to come. Congratz

  • Dear Maestro Araiza! Congratulations on your Birthday anniversary yesterday October the 4th. May God keep you in good health and singing many years more!!

  • too sloooooooooooooooooow

  • THIS IS JUST P E R F E C T!!!

    My favourite performance!

    Pure ideal....

    Thanks for posting!

  • It is not too slow. It's just perfect.

  • I agree, the tempo is perfect!

  • Perfect D flat!!! No one can beat Jose Francisco Hotbottoms Teeny Bonbon Bigeyes Araiza Andrade!!!!!!!

  • Francisco is AWESOME!!!!!!!!

  • A GREAT and SPECTACULAR song, thank you very much for posting it.

  • look on the sheet! it says "allegro maestoso". so it isn't too slow! it's great!

  • The high D flat is not the greatest but it is secure. He bravely sings some phrases softly at the end after pushing very hard before then.

  • Samurai, I think your analysis is not the greatest. That is a very difficult piece to sing and Araiza knocks it out of the ballpark....One of the best interpretations of this pice I've ever heard.

  • Excelente, bravo!

  • Vibrant, Virile, Brilliant, Gorgeous, Bravissimo!!!...

Those little rossinian tenors of today... HA-HA-HA!!!

  • It's incredible the way this great mexican tenor interprets Rossini. He always sings keeping the same color in his voice(low & high). And he shows a perfect singing line while he reaches the high C. Most tenors are afraid of singing this very dificult piece and hold the high C just for a second. Araiza holds it without panic and with full virile voice. Just amaizing !!

  • I think the high note is C# That´s not less impresive!

Rossini didn´t like fullvoice notes above G# he wanted more headvoice in the sound. But I think he was so wrong!

  • Thanks for your comment!! I agree with you, this master piece shine much more while sung in fullvoice. I checked the score and the Key for this "cujus animam" is A flat, which means that the high note at the end is a D flat(equivalent of C#).

  • That's a high D-flat at the end.

  • But, who's splitting hairs here... it sounds amazing!

  • Francisco shows the world "How it should be done !" Every tenor in the world should listen to this over and over and watch how he sings. Simply amazing !

  • What a voice, what a singer. Great! Heard him often live!
