Just because the vast majority of car engines are either of the inline or V design, and hence the bottom end would refer to the crankshaft area, doesn't mean that a flat engine has the convention area of a bottom end. Yes it has a crankshaft, but he could have just as easily said that. And I think a rotary powered mazda would have issues with calling something in it the bottom end.
