@MegaGamerRO What do you mean, fake? I actually just watched this episode on my second time through lost and noticed this. I went over to report my findings but found this video. It is supposed to be obvious, the way they cut to black and amplify the sound the second time. Anyways it does make different sounds but this sound it makes the most. It's the sounds of the electromagnetism moving through it.

Like it may sound like a printer, sure, but sometimes it sounds like a dinosaur, sometimes it sounds like a giant machine.

Locke was a sad, lonely, angry old man, who was the perfect person to mold and manipulate. So the monster showed himself as a beautiful light to use locke. So sad..poor locke :(

I just heard a discussion form the sound designers of lost and that sound of the shadow monster was actually a printer in a taxi cab. He just used that sound for both parts cause it fit. It had nothing to do with what is to come

A bigger mystery for me was how Charlie ended up in the middle section of the plane crash? When he had just left the forward toilet. The pilot showed his drugs there. There was no time to walk back to the seats in the middle. Right?

-that's because it was an in-joke about the fact that the production team used the sound of an electrical device, as is heard in this video.

yes, the smoke monster sound IS there for a reason here. but as a reference to the fact that the smoke monster sounds like the machine here, much like rose stated in an earlier episode

They actually use the sound from a NYC Taxi Cab recipt printer for the smoke monster. Thats why Rose is quoted "It sounds so familiar." In the early season I thought he was a dinosaur XD Now I just think hes a dick with a plan. Killing off 4 charecters,... They better make the finale good.

@Oorah007 I remember Rose saying it was a familiar sound. It sounds like chirping incects to me, like at night when they make a lot of noise. Insects and clanking chains. Also the cawing and wing-flapping of birds. I never would have guessed a taxi receipt printer.

they actually made a little secret in the new video game Just Cause 2, where theres an island that makes you crash when you fly over it in a plane, and there are a lot of references to LOST, like sometimes you hear the sounds that the smoke monster makes when your running around

Well, the producers said that they took the monster's sounds from the noise that a taxi cab makes when it's printing the receipt. So, it's not surprising that the adding machine sounds like the monster.

Of course, pretty much everything on Lost is intentional, so it probably IS a prelude reference to Locke's encounter with the Smoke Monster (and possibly the Smoke Monster taking his form as well).
