Torture itself is somewhat un-reliable, but the threat of torture actually gets people to open up. Sleep deprivation has actually been proven to work. Law Enforcement does it with suspects all the time. One reason why the first Mission the group commonly called delta force failed with the attempt to rescue the embassy staff in Iran was that Jimmy Carter had oversight of what they would do and when they would do it. Putting government leadership in charge of intelligence gathering is very bad.

If you put a gun to someone’s head, or torture them you will never know from that point on whether they are telling the truth or not. You would be better off to send someone in the room that looks similar that can speak the lingo, get a quart of brandy in the suspect, establish a rapport, and then let him shoot his mouth off. And if that is not sufficient there are hundreds of harmless techniques using non-lethal drugs combined with a little, "unethical-hypnosis". People who torture ENJOY IT!
