It's easier just to use the colour range selector to make a seleation, CTRL J to a new layer then desaturate the BG.... No masking required

This is awesome and so easy, but I am having a major issue. It worked the first 50 times I did it now all of a sudden I can't do it!!! I am a new Photoshop person so I am not sure if something is changed. Just wanted to see if there were any specific settings I should be on the look out to allow this process to happen??
