Owl City is not bad, but compared to Dntel or TPS, he's got a lot to do to achieve the same amount of awesomness. If you're going to draw tight comparisons between Gibbard and Young (of Owl CIty) you most likely are not any sort of actual fan of either. To judge one only on the basis of comparison to the other is a mistake and probably a reason that a fan of one turns out disliking the other. Regardless of your interest in either, those listeners who have at least some sense of what musical talent is should realize they both have it.

Best way to listen to new music is to download as many various new artists (new to you) as you can, via itunes purchase entire albums from the "listeners also bought" section, after you do this put your entire
collection on shuffle and be amazed at what new sounds you hear. Telefon Tel Aviv and this band was one of my amazing finds.

@gale34 Ahem, they sound so much alike that it's hard not to compare them. He may not proclaim to be the successor of Postal Service but it has become apparent that he fits the bill the best. He is and will be the successor until he starts making music in a different genre (like metal, which I doubt he would), or until he stops making music, or someone better comes along and people move to that artist/band.

@gale34 They still both sound very much alike, whether or not one is more upbeat then the other. Owl City is probably the closest thing to Postal Service at the moment. Please, listen to Owl City and Postal Service and tell me that they don't sound similar, especially when it comes to the voice. Obviously Owl City has some variations, but that doesn't mean Owl City isn't similar to Postal Service.

Owl City lacks the subtle modulations and noises going on in the background. Jimmy Tamborello is the master of perfecting the way his sounds fill a space and that bastard from owl city is to lazy to focus on all that, hes just trying to copy a formula.

I love postal service and I occasionally dig some Owl City. But they really are NOT similar at all... Owl City is way more straight synth-pop, whereas Postal Service is more like glitch music in a pop format

I have an idea about the purpose of the feedback in this song: it's talking about a dream and there is feedback at the beginning and the end. The one at the beginning represents the 'I' character falling asleep while the one at the end represents him waking up. Just my 2 cents.

And Adam Young said in some interview that he wanted to be the next TPS and "continue" the feeling of Give Up.And Gibbard and Walla were pissed and cried foul and posted stuff on twitter and demanded payment in the form of ponies.And as much as I hate it, they're all connected.

originality...yeah, it's not so much that as authenticism. but Owl City, nothing of his music is authentic.
musically, it's a watered down, retard-friendly take on what he idolises.
he's also basically singing in broken Gibbard. lyrically, it doesn't take much analysis to see how he cribbed from 'Such Great Heights' on 'Fireflies'.
I write music myself. before I developed my own unique style, I used to write whilst listening to songs that inspired me. sounds like this guy has done the same.

@thisguyisajerk why are you trying to make some hero out of this guy? there's no honour or whatever in making tunes in your parents basement, and even less if the tunes you make are such a naive, meek rip of something so vital and brilliant.
people are rightly bitter as Tambarello honed his own unique take on electronic pop music, defining all that was good about early 00s lap-pop with a couple of timeless records. but to a comparitively tiny audience. and this kid is effectively taking credit.

Best way to listen to new music is to download as many various new artists (new to you) as you can, via itunes purchase entire albums from the "listeners also bought" section, after you do this put your entire
collection on shuffle and be amazed at what new sounds you hear. Telefon Tel Aviv and this band was one of my amazing finds.

I don't understand why everyone is trying to say Owl City is a rippoff of Figurine and Dntel, surely they were pioneers and legends of the synth-pop movement, but comparing Owl City to either is just a disgrace to Figurine and Dntel. Owl City does make good music, "good enough" for the public.

This is a really good point. Even if Owl City is just watered-down Dntel or Postal Service, it's still better than most of top 40 radio. Still, it's a shame the public seems to want watered-down Dntel over real Dntel. I don't understand, but mediocrity has always been popular.
