Goth is a subculture based on music so yes actually listening to the music is a large part of it. That's like calling yourself a biker because you have the jacket but having never rode a motorcycle. Why the hell does any kind of metal, have to take the name "Goth" seriously. I mean, goth isn't about black clothing, celtic crosses, vampires and all that other crap... Goth Rock is a STYLE of rock, not all this "Spooky" crap. Although, i'm probably typing this for a lot of mallgoths to read... not worth my time.

What the fuck do you think inspired the music? (And by the way, The Ramones created the punk sound, not the Sex Pistols.) In the early days of semi-goth (Depeche Mode, The Cure), goth had no real identity. Not until it discovered Anne Rice. (Published 1973, by the way.) Boo-yah!

nope its also a style of metal the problem with you people is your living 20 years in the past goth isnt what it used to be and it will continue to change. who knows maybe in the next 15 to 20 years there will be a new hardcore goth genre called "goth-core" and we are the ones who will call them mallcore for listening to it. but the truth is that goth is always changing and you need to accept new things because where is it written that GOTHS of all people cant listen to gothic metal?

i agree there is no since in people arguing about it because after all everyone has different opinions on whats really "goth" and whats not and whats emo etc. And people will argue about it forever and never come up with the answers. my point is differing opinion means that there is no real truth.

Goth is a subculture based on music so yes actually listening to the music is a large part of it. That's like calling yourself a biker because you have the jacket but having never rode a motorcycle. When people claim to be goth because just because they are dark and wea the clothes occasionally annoys me. It's like all the little girls in their Hot Topic clothes at the Bauhaus/NIN concert that kept saying things like, "These old guys(Bauhaus) need to get off stage so NIN can play".
