  • During the early 50s this engine was really run down, it was shedded at Leicester GC shed, me and my pals used to play on it when it was in the shed yard untill chased off by the shed foreman.

  • 2005?!?! hmm.... why wasn't i told about this?

  • I remember being there with my dad, drove all the way up to York from Essex for a ride on it, was also on a Hogwarts carriage :D!

  • Great pics. Even the announcement in the station was authentically unintelligible, or are they still that way?

  • @faluga4 Still that way ;-)

  • I was expecting to see Ray Milland.

  • 11 people are trainspotters who missed the train for this event

  • Hey, where's Scotsman's chime whistle? I miss that whistle. The chime whistle sound on 4472 is sweet. The A4 whistle (in this video) looks too loud but awsome! But love her chime whisle.

  • @scotsman125 .Scotsman does,nt have a chime whistle and is an A3 not an A4.

  • @71josher. Than what kind of whistle it is?!

  • It's such a good looking train!

  • I prefer the Walking Welshman.

  • yes not many people know it was built in Doncaster

  • A piece of nostalgic class , great video .

  • I was on that Train! There Hogwarts carriages from harry potter :)

  • Its missing its second tender

  • @HotForgeChaos It only had the second tender during the 60's.

  • this locomotives has a certene charecter about it

  • Guess what: She's coming back! :D

  • Oh my don't you just love the announcers voice prompting the arrival of The Flying Scotsman you know like it happens every day lol

  • flying scotsman is now in WW2 black livery, for the first time in many years... :)

  • @mrlegendatwork1999 The WW2 livery is always nice, but it still will never compared to that beautiful classic LNER green livery.

  • @CaptainDarthy i totally agree 100% with you, i love the traditional green livery and the black aswell but you cant beat the green :)

  • Before the Flying Scotsman went to the USA in 1969, it was kept at Twickenham station because it still had a water tower.

I managed one evening to get to stand on the footplate as a kid. Will never forget it.

Beautiful loco, long may she chuff.

  • no smoke deflectors in 2005? i though they were attached for all of the journeys due to visibility issues

  • 2:15!!!! holy f***!!!! ive seen wheel spin in loco but not that much!!!

  • why cant Mallard also be in steam today, its is just more famous, come on, worlds fastest steam train for god's sakes

  • @MrTrainboy1 ou mean locomotive, not train!

  • Thing of beauty is a joy forever.

  • Not long to wait before the beast can finally run again.

  • I bursted out laughing when the kids got the devil possibly scared out of them when the Scotsman let steam pressure out of the pipes attached to its cylinders. looooooooooooooooool

  • What was the top speed the magnificent train achieved ? Im having an arguement with a mate and neither of us can remember it. lol

  • Superb video. What a locomotive!

  • spectacular, simply majestic

  • At 3:12 there is another steam loco in the background can you remember what this one was

  • @browndog388 Looking closely, it appears to be a smokey class 43.

  • Whoa! Epic wheelslip at 2:18, lol.

  • THREE CHEERS FOR THE GREATEST STEAM TRAIN OF ALL HIP HIP HOORAY, HIP HIP HOORAY, HIP HIP HOORAY, LONG LIVE THE RAILWAYS, LONG LIVE THE FLYING SCOTSMAN.

  • @Giselle76502 no the jupiter was the greatest

  • I'd say Mallard or City of Truro are more significant and greater locos than Flying Scotsman

  • Great video of 4472 in 2005. 5 stars.

  • Its sad to see such a wonderful mechine in pieces at the NRM in York :(

    Great vid ;)

  • It looks like it has a chime whistle fitted to the smoke box.

  • Every one to their own opinion happy train watching.

  • what a train

  • Wow I cant wait till shes out of the work shop and runing again. I want to see her in rail life

  • 4472 at York does not have ugley German smoke deflectors however at Malton it does two different videos?

  • Did you film this?

  • @Dinosorable

    Yes I did

  • @scribblernick Cool. You did great shots too. :)

  • We'll trade you Union Pacific 844 for the Flying scotsman :D

  • @foroke1 I think American locomotives are so...ugly compared to the elegance of British locomotives.

  • @TheRantingRocker Well I've taken that comment back since then. 844 is one of my favorite locomotives. And I respect that opinion. I don't agree with it. But I respect it........

Trade you an american 0-6-0 for the Scotsman :p

  • @foroke1 I take back that comment! Southern Pacific Daylight is just as pretty as the Scotsman.

  • @TheRantingRocker Even 611? or 4449? I do agree that british locomtives are elegant, but not all American locomotives are ugly.

  • @NscaleRR I just said i took back that comment.

  • @TheRantingRocker Im sorry I didnt see it.

  • Clunk cluck?

  • @flyingpigstuff air pump

  • Great Video, Thanks for sharing.

  • the virgin trains max out 140mph but this will do a 100

  • amazing to think iv stood in the cab of one of the most famous steam locos ever

  • no smoke deflectors. good. now all that remains is to do away with that wretched double chimney

  • Well she does have smoke deflectors at Malton, but not at York! What's the story there?

  • God i wish i could ride in that cab someday in scotland

  • i thought it was supposed to have two tenders not one

  • @NHLFan464646 that's only for long journeys

  • I went on one of these trips and remember there was a film about it on the tele. Whilst in Scarborough I got to stand in the cab... had a fantastic time! thanks for sharing!

  • it sounds amazing as it approaches.....

    The flying scotsman is amazing!!!!!

  • Fantastic Locomotive!

  • i see she hasn't got her german smoke deflectors.

  • real train!!!!!

  • wow...

    you are one lucky guy!

  • Anyone have video of the Oriental Express?

  • its ment to be back in 2011

  • i have the video of it coming into scarbourogh

  • Currently in NRM Workshop in York

  • @scribblernick And they are not making that much progress are they?

it'll be a long time before we can see her steaming again.

  • @scribblernick any plans of a return to British mainline rails in excursion service or just another prserved one not going to run again

  • @scribblernick , yes and it is a sad sight indeed to see her resemble an airfix kit. :(

  • @scribblernick will be out this weekend though, in wartime black

  • What is the current status of the Scotsman last I heard she was in bits in Australia

  • god shes beautiful in full steam goregous, ive seen her in pieces and rusted to an inch of her life it makes me smile to see her like that again

  • @johnv500 i do to i only really like some diesel trains but i mostly like steam engines!

  • you can see this getting rebuilt at nrm-national railway museum its free to enter it brilliant

  • i would quiet happily kill everyone in that station to watch this live

  • how come it sets off without smoke deflectors and then has them later in the journey? lol

  • @LeamingtonSteve obviously footage of two seperate journeys.

  • Beautiful British steam locomotive.

  • Does anyone know if you can ride on it?

  • you can't it's been put out of service but you can see it on display at the National Railway Museam in York England

  • Is it this busy only because the scotsman is there? When I passed through York Station this summer, it was as dead as a doorknob (I went through during noon).

  • It's better without the smoke deflectors

  • TrainspotterX invites you to come see trains of Australia

    Great video !

  • apart from that, great vid, beautiful loco, keep on steamin

  • My mother was born in Edinburgh, her father worked on the railways, and was the fireman on the Scotsman (among others of course) he wasnt involved in any of the record breaking runs,it was just his day job.

  • an old friend of mine from london used to work on the mallard as a guard. back in the 40/50's.

    he recently died though :(

  • Beatiful Train and the first ever to reach 100mph

  • Look up City of Truro ;-)

  • Well, City of Truro was never actually *clocked* at 100mph by a dynamometer car, but was probably the first alright, even if there isn't any printed evidence...

  • What a sexy thing

  • Nice wheelslip at 1:18

  • Sweet view of the fire at 1:08

  • isnt the flying scotsman a nonstop express to endiburgh?

  • yes!

  • shes currently in bits at york - very sad ti see!

  • so your saying she's scraped

  • of course not shes being rebuilt in the workshop! I do have some photos if you would be interested

  • Last of Sir Nigel Griesly's A1's. What a beautiful loco. (And I'm an American too!) The only loco that could be better probably was the A4 (Mallard, Sir Nigel Greisly)

  • no! flying scotsman is an a3!!!

  • GRESLEY!!!!

  • they should use the flying scotsman for journeys from edinburgh to london , good vid m8

  • Ah! What a beautiful Locomotive that is. I wish the useage of steam trains like that were used more broadly!

  • this locomotive was one of the few with a water scoop that could grab water out of a trough between the rails under way.

  • Great Video, 5 Stars! I will be great when shes back on the main line! Any idea what date this was?

  • Hi, think it was about mid August 2005. Heard she's back next year all being well!

  • @scribblernick Shes overdue largley i went to visit her in may and shes taking shape but it could be a while before shes back in action ( If she is due to return to action im not to sure )

  • @60103Henry i just read that she may be returning in 2010 if the funds for her resteration where enugh,

  • @tweetsie12190fan yes possibley by I would of through next year is more realistic!

  • My grandad drove that train

  • really wow i wish i could

  • can we see her with double tenders now???

  • Its in thought at national rail to fit all Mainline steamers with 2 tenders to reduce water stops.

  • Brilliant video. Well positioned to catch the wheel slip; neverless she does look fantastic!

  • Nice video!

The boy in front of the camera looks like Norman Price from Fireman Sam!

  • Ive riding behind this fine engine twice, both on the Scarborough run. The 1st time in 1987 and we had the rear 4 coaches to ourselfs. The 2nd time was in 2004 and on the outward journey, got sat at the very front of the front coach.

  • Great footage of a great locomotive at a historic railway station. She's a beauty allright, but personally my fave is Oliver Cromwell!

  • That engine is a legend. Cheers from oz. 5 stars

  • Even though I'm Amarican, it's my life long dream to go to the NRM and see Flying Scotsman. Now I now what he looks and sounds like. Thanks for posting this. :)

  • i think its dismanteled at the moment i think anyway in the workshop sorry if it is

  • Great video. Well done.

  • OK 4472 is a cool engine.

but if you brits ever seen J-611 that is a

real engine, maybe the assmunchs in roanoke that have the J in storage will let

you bloody brits have it and sit side by side the flying scotsman you would see that 4472 is a light wieght andthe J RULES.

  • flying scotsman is bad im a brit i know. They got so desperate for money the sold the boiler of 4472 ..

  • British made and working

    suck it america lol

  • Beautiful engine!

  • I think 4472 is the best train ever ,cool video LOOKS LIKE ITS IN HD !

    AMG4472

  • lol thanks man. I'm a massive train buff but i never got into European stuff so i not really was able to appreciate it enough. It really is a shame, but i dunno its just not the same as american stuff. However, its cool to know trains run in my blood, im actually trying to get hired on the RR after this spring when i grad college. Damn i have poor sentence structure for a college student haha

  • Why don't all Trains still look like this?

Beautiful piece of Engineering, only the poor things in bits now - AGAIN - was reading an article on it the other day & cutting a long story short, it's going to cost £250,000 of donations to get it fixed & sorted. If you ask me the lottery should give one of there grants to the NRM to sort this beautiful piece of english heritage out.

  • "why dont all trains look like this" ..theres betters pieces called a4's a2's and ofcourse the a'1

  • So your not saying this A3 isn't nice?

  • yh it aint a nice design honeslty a4's and a'1s AND ivatt classes are nicer

  • My grandfather drove the Flying Scotsman before he immigrated here to the US in the mid 50s.

  • Wow! Your Grandfather's awesome, my Grandpa was in the Dambusters, pretty cool but not as cool as your Grandfather!

  • Great Video, Great Locomotive,

I rode behind 4472 Flying Scotsman from York to Scarborough and return to York in 2004, it was fantastic, the windows were open and you could smell the steam!

  • Interesting piece of film showing the locomotive

without the smoke deflectors and then passing

Malton en route to Scarborough with deflectors

    refitted. Wheel-slip also well captured.

  • wheel spin!!

  • Lovely train. It's supposed to be running the Scarborough Spa Express next year, after it's overhaul. Notice at 3:20 the clagging Valenta HST!

  • I forgot to say 2 things, they need to lose the double stack, and the Smoke Wings.

  • I still think American Steamers are better, but you cna't say you don't love the Flying Scotsman.

  • i remember bein at york n this fine engine was in n it let the preassure valve off n i nearly wet myself lol

  • Quite proud to say that my great granddad drove this... Fred Griffin

  • nice!

  • lol, cool!

  • loco's not trains, the train is the carriages.

  • gordons last surviving brother... what a beauty

  • @trueaway what about Green Arrow?

  • Thanks for this awesome piece of footage of 4472 Flying Scotsman..its great to see her surrounded by so many fans

  • im not even from the UK, but i would beat anybody who proposed scrapping such a beautiful machine, and piece of history

  • I would be there with you on that one..I was watching documentary by Pete Waterman only the other day..I may be wrong on this one, though there may be others out there that might also have seen it, but the roof above that particular spot where the group of admirers stand waiting, took a direct hit from German bombers during WWII..though looking at it now, you wouldn't have tought it??

  • Me too.

  • I was on this!

  • You lucky devil. :D

  • yip and she reached the speeds with pride!

  • I love this train, I find it brilliant.

When I was young I used to be obssesed with it lol.

  • sorry, just in the RailWay Series, The author would call it a he.

  • The flying scottsman is definately one of my favorite locomotives of all time. Its my favorite british loco tho. Absoulutley wonderful :D

  • Aye, would've been nice if some Royal Scot teak carriages were being pulled, give the full Flying Scotsman the run it deserves. :)

  • i have this in model

  • My great Grandfather drove this train along time ago.

  • I rode on her tht day! she was amazing!

  • cool weelslips

  • WOW what a train

  • Does a list of drivers exist for the Royal Scotsman? I think my grand-uncle may have been one in the 40s or 50s.

  • hehe The Flying Soctsman does exist...my dad said that it didn't.

  • Hey Flying Scotsman, your bro Gordon says hi! You're both really cool engines!

  • the flying scots man is the best steam engine ever

  • he's a very beutiful engine! I hope to ride in his carrages one day.

  • me too

  • now thats a proper locomotive

  • Where do i start with this one....

Flying Scotsman needs smoke deflectors because without them the smoke would drift down and impair the drivers vision from the cab, some other steam locomotives in the UK have blastpipes sharp enough to lift the smoke high and well clear of the locomotive, hence deflectors on these loco's are not needed.

Flying Scotsman is prone to slipping due to the pony truck wheels under the cab, not as much weight over the driving wheels as some other loco's.
